72 Monte Carlo Posted June 17 Posted June 17 Colored diagrams are so much easier to trace circuits with which makes it easier and faster to troubleshoot electrical issues, or to help make modifications to the electrical system. It always seems electrical jobs take a lot longer when you have to stare at black and white electrical diagrams. 4 Quote

cbolt Posted June 17 Posted June 17 Intermittent electrical problems are the most difficult to diagnose but now it sounds like its completely dead? That actually should make it easier, however after almost eliminating all the usual components it sounds like it will come down to tracing the voltage thru the system from the fuse block to the starter. The easiest way to do that is using a test light since you get an instant visual of either voltage or not. Regardless, you will likely need a helper to turn the key while you hold the light at whatever pin or connector or terminal you are checking. Personally, I would start with the output of the neutral start switch due to it being the easiest to access. Plus, that will tell you if the problem is between the fuse and the ignition switch or after the NSS. Just take your time and follow the voltage from each input and output. It will take some time but seems like you are down to that anyway. Plus, you have some quality color coded diagrams to follow now thanks to fgmcc! 4 Quote

Car will start a dozen times , go to start lucky number 13 , there is nothing , no click no nothing. I have already replace, starter solenoid, and bench tested, positive battery cable , ignition switch. Haven’t change the ignition cylinder, fuse, or neutral safety. I’m not much of an electrical person. Currently I just dropped the steering column. Decided to call it a day. NEED SOME HELP. i agree with Gray70. Check all ground wires. Start at the battery. then engine to firewall strap. 2 Quote

klassic rob Posted June 21 Author Posted June 21 Gents I think I have it, got power , she cranked . Issue is I had to hold the horseshoe in the most forward neutral and park position to get it to crank. If I don’t hold the shifter forward I get nothing. I lined the neutral safety switch with the alignment hole when I replaced it . Is it w en possible my linkage is off. I know when the vehicle was shipped after I received it I noticed when I try to put selector in first it hits my exhaust just a bit , doesn’t in any other position. Any thoughts. 2 Quote
GRAY 70 Monte Carlo Posted June 21 Posted June 21 Sounds like you might need to adjust linkage but for sure you need to readjust neutral safety switch. The neutral safety switch is based on the horseshoe shifter position. That’s why before the neutral switch not in the correct position to close the switch allowing the power to flow to the S pole. If your linkage is not correct the car would start but may start with car in gear or not completely in park position. So adjust switch and linkage that should correct both conditions 1 Quote
