riverdogs00 Posted June 28 Posted June 28 Group, For reference (under the engine thread 454 LS-7 XCH) I have a lot of the specifics on a build I did including converting a 70 to a 4speed, and installing a complete Quick performance 9" and installing my LS-7. I wanted to give a short (lol) review of what's transpired and how a company went above and beyond in my eyes. When I was originally getting the car running, I needed to break in the clutch, transmission, and rear end at the same time but the vehicle was not in a condition to do so. So, I did it on jack stands following the respective manufacturers guidelines. I put on about 50 miles or so on jack stands, and was finally able to get the car out. The vehicle runs on 100 octane, and its expensive, so the car is not driven much. I started noticing noise and was suspecting the trans, but after using chassis ears I realized it was the rear end. I removed the third member and inspected and found that the pinion lash was excessive. Rather than paying $$$ to send it back to Quick Performance in Iowa, I took it to my local shop. They disassembled, cleaned, reassembled with all new components, but I kept the existing R & P trying to keep costs down. Once reinstalled, the noise was getting worse. I finally called Quick Performance and was working with Tom. By now, I had had the unit 2 1/2 years. Even though there was only 300-400 miles on it tops, it was old. I was simply trying to fact find and see if perhaps they had had a bad batch of gears. Once I went through everything, he put me in touch with Max, the shop manager. A 2 minute recount of what had happened, along with a few pictures and max said, yup, those gears have failed. I asked him if they were a private branded gear and he eluded they were, but it wasn't just a cost aspect. He said they use those as they have been very "tolerant" to break in procedures and generally have no issues with them. Some of the other sets were a little more finicky to that procedure. He offered to pick up the unit, rebuild it, replace the R & P with an upgraded unit (motive in this case). I was floored. Never expected it. He offered that now would be a great time to change ratios if I so chose, so after a few days took him up on that and went from 4.11's to 3.70. I removed the Third member again ( by now, not impressed that I just have a floor jack and jack stands and am old and a lot weaker than 30 yrs ago ). He sent the label, I went to home depot and found a closeable container, packed it and zip tied the lid shut and sent it off on their dime. 2 1/2 weeks later, my new unit arrives. Reinstalled and just took for a test drive to start the break in process. No noise, very smooth. Additionally, Jeff at Midwest Muncie where I bought the M24 was spot on with his choice of speedo gear for the new ratio. VERY impressed by Quick Performance, and how they stepped up. There is no warranty on a lot of these products anymore, especially if it takes you a few years to get the project out of the garage. Beyond Impressed. lastly...... other than my labor, I bought a tote for shipping, a replacement lube locker gasket and a speedo gear and some gear lube. That's it. They covered all of the costs and shipping. That my friends is a WIN ! pics are of the unit as received and unpackaged from QP this last time. It is a 9" with 1/4" axle tubes, upgraded center section, 1350 yoke and U joints, Eaton Tru track and 35 spline axles. mods, if this needs to go to a different forum - have at it. 4 Quote
Marks71 Posted June 29 Posted June 29 It’s nice to hear these kind of stories. Seems like most of what you hear is bad. They sound like a real stand up company. Hoopers Rear End just moved from the LA area up to our small town about 50 miles north. Next year will be 50 years in business for them. That says something about their quality and service. 4 Quote
