Chevy Dave Posted July 31 Posted July 31 I have a 70 SS454 wihh the original carb. I would like to add an AC solinoid to the carb. I purchased one from a 71 Corvette with a 454 and AC, and it did not fit. Doe's anyone know of one from another GM car that would fit. I think that an idle stop solinoid would also work if wired to the compressor circuit. Quote
Scott S. Posted July 31 Posted July 31 Chevelles. Impalas might..... Not sure if any of the B.O.P. G-bodies will interchange. Quote
Rob Peters Posted July 31 Posted July 31 What is an AC solenoid? Are you referring to the Anti-dieseling solenoid? rob Quote

I could be totally wrong here, but I’d guess it steps up the idle slightly when the AC is on to compensate for the additional drag created by the compressor. 1 Quote
1970mcss Posted August 1 Posted August 1 I had the same questions a few years ago. I thought my 70 454 should have had the solenoid. We did alot of research and could never proof that the 70 came with the solenoid. Dan James (Overdrive) made me a bracket to mount a solenoid to the factory carburetor. I ended up taking it off as it didn't seem to help. I ended up taking it off. If you are interested, you are welcome to the bracket. I also have the extension harness. Let me know, Paul Quote

Expand If we are talking about the same solenoid, the one mounted to the drivers side of the carb, that solenoid is not energized by the AC, it is automatically powered and energized as soon as the key is turned to the start/run position and sets as soon as the accelerator is pumped on the initial start. It does not disengage when the AC is turned off but does disengage when the key is turned off. So, when the key is turned to the off position the solenoid loses power and thus drops the throttle linkage below the idle and helps prevent engine run-on, aka dieseling. rob 1 Quote

Chevy Dave Posted August 1 Author Posted August 1 Paul, I would like to see a photo of the bracket and solenoid. I might purchase it. Chevy Dave Quote
Leghome Posted August 1 Posted August 1 Before I went with the Sniper EFI I hadd a solenoid on my Eldebrock 1406 to increase the idle whenthe AC kicked on. I sold the carb and have no ideawhere the braccket and solenoid are. The bracket was made for the 1406 and would not work on any other carb. I just spliced it into the power wire to the compressor so when it kicked in the solenoid was activated. Worked great Quote

cny first gen 71 Posted August 2 Posted August 2 I may still have the solenoid off of my 2 barrel, I'm not sure if they are the same. I removed it when I went to 4 barrel. I'd have to look. Quote
1970mcss Posted August 2 Posted August 2 I looked in my extra parts and I don't see it. I'll keep looking and if I find it I will let you know. Quote
