Marks71 Posted August 28 Posted August 28 Rob had made a statement in the “cars and parts for sale leads” section regarding the high asking price that I had to address. It was in regards to what someone might pay for something they have to have. I think I fall into that category. Maybe it was a midlife or late life thing, but I decided to get my first car back. I’ll be the first to admit that I paid too much for mine by a good 10% after negotiating a 2k cut in the asking price. My problem was I was very specific on what I wanted. It had to be as close as possible to my first car. Mainly, year, colors and interior. I wasn’t looking for a project. I’ve been there on a few cars and at my age when I finally finish the 64 Buick that was given to me by a friend about 15 years ago, I’m done. What I found was a real nice original owner car with 59k miles and full documentation that was as close to what I originally had as possible but considerably more than what I had budgeted for. I made a too low offer and was rejected so I kept looking and not finding anything. I kept coming back to this one because it was exactly what I was looking for. My brother had to talk me into it with the “ you only live once” and “you can’t take It with you” and “you know you’ll never find another so close to what you had” crap to convince me, but it worked. Granted, if it was an SS, of which my first one wasn’t, that would’ve been icing on the cake, but in this condition it would have been way out of my league anyway. That was just over 2 years ago and I’m glad I did it. That knot in my stomach from dipping into my retirement savings is long gone. I know i’ll never get my full investment back, but as long as I’m around it’ll never be for sale anyway. My icing on the cake turned out to be finding the FGMCC. 11 Quote
Dtret Posted August 28 Posted August 28 If it’s something you “ really want “ I don’t think you can overpay. You did the research and were not happy with what was out there at the time. The biggest problem I have is the never ending knot in my stomach. How long do you want to keep looking when it’s right there and that’s exactly what you want? I don’t have any problem with it because you didn’t way overpay. What’s a few grand in the big picture? I wouldn’t worry about it. My two cents ( cuz that’s all I have right now). 7 Quote
Canuck Posted August 28 Posted August 28 If a car comes available with all the right colours and options for you then it’s not a big deal to pay above market value. I know that I would pay above market value if I came along something like my first car that has been all restored. In the long run if I don’t need to paint it or change options in the car it is a win in my opinion. 5 Quote
DragCat Posted August 28 Posted August 28 I always say, a car is only worth what someone is willing to pay. So if you were willing to pay that # then its all good. I do sometimes have "buyers remorse" on big ticket items , but then I get home, pop the top on an adult beverage, and say..well I'm NOT eating dog food for the next month, there are no overdue bill letters, so no harm no foul 🤣 9 Quote

cny first gen 71 Posted August 29 Posted August 29 If your comfortable with what you paid and what you got is what you want then you didn't pay to much. Of course you're going to have to put some more into it to make it yours but that's normal. Congratulations on your purchase. 6 Quote

Marks71 Posted August 30 Author Posted August 30 Guilty as charged. I’ve got a lot of crap in my shop, but it’s all good crap. I’m sure when my time comes, my kids will do what a couple of friends did when their fathers passed and get a 40 yd. dumpster. By the way, some of that crap came from those dumpsters. 4 2 Quote

Sounds familiar.... lol I don't think Dad every met anything he didn't think he could use................Some day. My Mom explained to to me once. Having grown up it the 50' & 60's, people didn't have the luxury of just replacing everything, so stockpiling stuff that might be useful sometime down the road was common practice. Makes sense when you think about it. 2 Quote

Makes sense when you think about it. So true. We had some elders in the neighborhood i grew up in that were quite well off but were very frugal. As a kid i never understood why. They never had new cars and their homes were average. As I got a little older I realized they grew up during the great depression and they experienced how quickly everything could be lost. 1 Quote
71SSclone Posted August 31 Posted August 31 I overpaid for my Buick, and will end up being upside down in the Monte also. But it doesn't really bother me. The Buick is an original sheet metal car, and almost every panel will be new in the Monte. Both will be extremely rust free with big blocks. I think it's well worth it spend a little more and get what you want. Lord knows I've bought lots of things that needed work, or weren't exactly what I wanted. 5 Quote
Dtret Posted August 31 Posted August 31 You can overpay and get what you want, pretty much ready to go or you can way way overpay and build the same thing. We don’t charge ourselves for the thousands of hours on a build. 4 Quote
Jared Richey Posted August 31 Posted August 31 If you paid say $35k for a $28k car in 5 years it'll be worth 35 anyway. These are still gradually climbing. 3 Quote
