speedfreak71 Posted July 14, 2010 Posted July 14, 2010 Anyone know how much a fiberglass hood will save on a 71 monte? Quote
Jared Richey Posted July 14, 2010 Posted July 14, 2010 If you go with a pin on, it should be more than that considering the weight of the hinges, and the latch assembly that bolts in the radiator support. Just the hood weights 80 lbs. Â GlassTek said the Monte pin on weights 14 lbs, I think they're pretty close... But I've never weighed my fiberglass hood. Quote
ejw71 Posted July 17, 2010 Posted July 17, 2010 I think I remember weighting a 71 Monte steel hood, 200lbs, in 1995. Key word in last sentence is think. Ed Quote
502ci Posted July 17, 2010 Posted July 17, 2010 As far as weight savings it depends on the hood style...pin on type, street duty, how big of a scoop if any at all, etc... Â Mine with a 4" cowl and finished underside has to wegh 45-50 lbs. I can't believe I did not weigh it before I put it on... Â I think I remember weighting a 71 Monte steel hood, 200lbs, in 1995. Key word in last sentence is think. Ed You got the "think" part right... It weighs 80lbs. like Jared said... Â Â Quote
Andreas Posted July 17, 2010 Posted July 17, 2010 I think I am Hercules, installed a steel hood a few times all by myself.... Â Â Quote
bigscaht Posted July 17, 2010 Posted July 17, 2010 hey Andreas you aint alone..Ive removed adn reinstalled the stock hood on my monte quite a few times...not fun!!! Quote
Mike 57 Posted July 17, 2010 Posted July 17, 2010 I have done it too! Gotta use your head, literally! Quote
Chevyss Posted July 17, 2010 Posted July 17, 2010 I just had to pick up my stock hood the other day and I sure thought that was more than 80 lbs. All I know it was a hand full. Quote
Sam (Bones) Posted July 17, 2010 Posted July 17, 2010 and I thought I was the only one foolish enough to do it by myself Quote
502ci Posted July 17, 2010 Posted July 17, 2010 Funny to read how other people put their "steel" hood on by "themselves"...I also did it and don't think I'll try it ever again. I put a bunch of cloth towels on the windshield in case the hood slid into it and the whole time thinking I should stop and abort this mission before I cause some damage...I gotta admit though taking it off by yourself is not as bad. MADMAC Posted July 18, 2010 Posted July 18, 2010 The original hood on my '72 was 86 lbs, the fiberglass cowl was 13 lbs. Quote
