Low Profile!

Do they make a low profile trans mount? Or a crossmember that lets the trans sit a little lower? Thank you!

I'm not sure as it has been over 8 years since I put my crossmember back in with my Gear Vendors but I just may have installed the crossmember upside down to lower the tranny a bit...now I may be completly mistaken about this and maybe it is not even possible but I remember doing something out of the normal... I do remember using a big hammer on the mount also to get something lined up...sucks getting old, the memory is the first thing to go...

Ahhh, I just got a flashback...I was able to lower the whole crossmember by not re-installing the rubber frame mounts. That dropped it down something like 1/4" to a 3/8". Never had a problem with it solidly mounted this way. I have heard of other people doing this also.

If I dont use the rubber frame mounts how can i secure it to the frame? Thank you.

You might be able to change the profile with a G-Force crossmember:

Some of our cars came with cross members that did not utilize the cups on either end. They are solid mounted to the frame with 2 bolts on either side.

 

Not sure what they are called but if you call any yard that specializes in Montes, Chevelles (Leo - good place to start) they should be able to steer you in the right direction. Not sure you would want to pay shipping on that item though. May want to try local guys first....HEAVY! I know I was instructed to get one for mine, which I did, but I cannot remember what I looked for at the time.

That's not right Dan....lol.

 

With few exceptions the Monte came with a cross member that was fitted into rubber cups on the frame. This was to supress vibration so the car would ride smoother than it's counter parts. Only Monte's with standard shifts had the solid mount cross member from what I've seen.

 

The solid mount cross member is simply one from a Chevelle, it bolts right in because the frame dimensions are the same. But it will lower the tail of the tranny about 1/4 inch. This is always one of the first changes I've made to all my Montes and if you want to use the polyurethane tranny mount, it's the only way it will fit.

 

Check e-bay, racing junk...or anyone parting out a Chevelle...you can get one cheap because the Chevelle guys don't think there's anything special about the cross member.

 

The rubber cups are agood idea for a "cruiser" but if you've added any power at all....you need the solid mount!!!

Steve I have polyurethane motor mounts and tranny mount, and I still have mine mounted at the ends with the rubber, am I hurting anything?

My question to you Ian would be, what benifit is a poly mount if the crossmember is mounted on rubber? I would think it kind of defeats the purpose of the poly mount when the rubber ends still flex.

I just used it because it came with the motor mount kit to be honest and the original one was shot But I see your point.
