black07ss Posted July 3, 2012 Posted July 3, 2012 I have been told that silicone will help keep rubber soft. Will this work to soften up rubber that is getting brittle? Is there anything that will soften rubber again?
cny first gen 71 Posted July 3, 2012 Posted July 3, 2012 You could try it Bob it may help a bit and or try armor all that might help also. apply it several times and see if it helps, depends how brittle it is. I used armor all on the rubber peices under the tail light between the bumper it seemed to work after a good cleaning.
7tonemonte Posted July 4, 2012 Posted July 4, 2012 I chucked a couple of my things in a can of trans fluid Bob, sort of helped soften them up a bit, and it swelled them up enough that the overspray from previous hack jobs came right off
black07ss Posted July 4, 2012 Author Posted July 4, 2012 I'll give the ATF fluid a try. It is not cracking the rubber is stiff.
Ian Posted July 4, 2012 Posted July 4, 2012 I would not use Armor All or ATF as it is petroleum based and will eat the rubber...
black07ss Posted July 4, 2012 Author Posted July 4, 2012 Well I put on a nice coat of silicone last night, today it was absorbed and it seems to be a little softer. I'm going to put on another coat in the morning
willie Posted July 4, 2012 Posted July 4, 2012 I used wd-40 on the rubber boots for elec windows inbetween the door and frame, worked great.
flipper Posted July 19, 2012 Posted July 19, 2012 I use Armor All. I have used it for years on my Camaro and it does a great job. Some people swear by it [me] and others say not to. What ever works.
