monte70car Posted February 16, 2013 Posted February 16, 2013 So on our 06 Yukon xl Denali it has a tow and haul mode. When is a good time to use this mode? Looking in the owners manual it really didn't say when to use it. Also on the Yukon it has a trans temp gauge what would be the ideal temp when towing a trailer? again the owners manual doesn't say. footballubet Posted February 16, 2013 Posted February 16, 2013 You can use it anytime you have the trailer behind you. It will adjust the shift points and help with downshifting. As far as trans temps they could typically be 60 degrees above ambient temps. to as high as 75 degrees above on hills. So on a 80 degree day they may run 140-155 degrees if your trans cooler is cooling efficiently. Quote

It's also cool every once and a while when not hauling anything to turn it on for no other reason but to hear the roar of the exhaust note as it winds up on the higher shift points...it also helps if you have an aftermarket exhaust installed... wallaby Posted February 16, 2013 Posted February 16, 2013 We used to run diesel Ford trucks as tow trucks, and those had a simple OD on/off switch. It was recommended that the OD be turned off when towing to avoid damage to the lockup converter. It probably wasn't such a big deal on level ground once you got up to speed, but for average driving while towing it was obviously hard on that lockup converter to be shifting in & out all the time. Maybe the tow mode switch on yours does something similar...raises the fluid pressures, raises the shift points, and aids in engine braking. I don't know if it disables the converter lockup or not, but I understand that the lockup mechanism is not a heavy-duty piece. Quote
Sam (Bones) Posted February 16, 2013 Posted February 16, 2013 the trans will run cooler in tow mode too Quote

You asked for it. When you are towing a trailer or hauling a load in the bed. It raises your shifpoints and will almost always keep the torque convertor from locking up at cruise speed. 180 is about as high a temp you would want to see. Higher than that your trans will hate you but love your wallet. Higher than 180 you want to either slow down or lighten the load. Your Denali has a pretty big trans cooler already, but don't ask it do do the job of a 3/4 ton. That is what a 2500HD is for. Quote
bigscaht Posted February 22, 2013 Posted February 22, 2013 i love the tow haul mode on my 02 Tahoe..I use it when im hauling all my DJ equipment around....it stops the TC from locking up..its pretty fun to drive like that wit no extra load but i wouldnt reccomend doin that too much!! Quote
