bigscaht Posted August 24, 2013 Posted August 24, 2013 so im installing the two bushings on top of the rear end..pressing them in is a pain..but heres my question..in the pic below have I pressed the bushing in too far..have i ruined the bushing or will it still work?? after I removed my makeshift press the bushing houseing isnt bent but the bushing it self was pushed into the houseing and is now completly flat and even with the outter houseing where as it was out of the houseing about 1/16" before I started pressing it in...man I hope i dont have to take it back out. Mike Brichta Posted August 24, 2013 Posted August 24, 2013 From the looks of the first pic I don't think the bushing is all of the way in yet. They should go in until they hit the raised area around the side of the bushing (the shoulder). I usually do not paint the bushings before installing because they go in so hard. Also, I always check the ears of the rear and file down anything that isn't smooth. Both surfaces need to be clean and always use light weight oil before trying to install. I just have a big socket and hammer that I use to just pound them in. If I give them a few hits and they are not going in then I file the ears some more and look for burs. Hope that helps!! Mike Brichta Posted August 24, 2013 Posted August 24, 2013 Also, it is very important that the bushing is started straight. If it is a little off it will not go in and will most likely be ruined in the process. Quote
Sam (Bones) Posted August 24, 2013 Posted August 24, 2013 I just beat them in too! if it is a poly bushing, you should be able to remove the bushing from the shell, install the shell then lube the bushing and re-install Quote
bigscaht Posted August 24, 2013 Author Posted August 24, 2013 yes in that pic the bushing isnt all the way in yet..i should take one with it all the way in. Didnt know you could install the shell then jus slide the bushing in..darn it. And they came painted black. I will post another pic when I get home. Quote
bigscaht Posted August 26, 2013 Author Posted August 26, 2013 so this is how the bushing looks now with the case all the way in... see the bushing started comming out the other side.. I can push it back through but im wondering if its ruined and I should buy another......any thoughts????????? Quote
footballubet Posted August 26, 2013 Posted August 26, 2013 You may be able to push it back through. When you push those in you want to be pushing on the metal outside ring only and not the center of the bushing. Quote
bigscaht Posted August 26, 2013 Author Posted August 26, 2013 yeah..my washers were jus a tad too small..imma take the bushing out the metal case and jus push the case in then grease up the bushing and push it in after the hard part....learning as I go!!! Quote
Sam (Bones) Posted August 27, 2013 Posted August 27, 2013 it looks as if you don't have it all the way in the axle housing, the bushing shell should go until the raised part of the shell meets the ear on the housing Quote
bigscaht Posted August 27, 2013 Author Posted August 27, 2013 yeah it needs to go in about 1/16 or so more but im wondering if I can jus push the bushing back the other way since ive pushed it out the other side..i finally got some bigger washers to use! Quote
footballubet Posted August 27, 2013 Posted August 27, 2013 Try pushing it back. It looks in the pictures like a bit more than a 1/16" more to the shoulder. Quote
bigscaht Posted August 28, 2013 Author Posted August 28, 2013 ok so I got the bushing shell all the way in and pushed the bushing back out the other way and got the 2nd one installed..why is the 2nd one always easier than the 1st? lol Now to get the holes lined up and bolt in the arms.... Quote
Mo's70MCs Posted August 28, 2013 Posted August 28, 2013 Thank god you don't have the body on it! Good progress though!! Quote
bigscaht Posted August 28, 2013 Author Posted August 28, 2013 man who you tellin..i woulda had to go to the shop if the body was still in the way...lol Quote
wallaby Posted August 29, 2013 Posted August 29, 2013 That's about the only drawback to using a press to force the parts together....you loose all feel of what's happening. I prefer the hammer so you can work your way around the edge and keep/get it straight as you go. The press method tends to get it going crooked, then keeps going anyway. If it starts in the right direction, it's a lot easier, but what are the odds.. Quote
