that sounds more like it... maybe as they wear they get hung up and can be coaxed back into enough contact to run a few more times...that "dead spot" phrase was what we went with back in 1977 or so...what did we know...only that the hammer worked!!
-
I know this may sound silly but occasionally with a GM starter that goes 'dead' intermittently it was a dead spot on the armature.. we would go under and gently tap the case with a hammer and it usually worked..of course the next step was to swap out the starter... but with multiple components between "the key and the flywheel" it can be a pain to narrow down as you have shared...
-
and if you go with changing the top you will get a good visual if anything hidden is starting...as you know ,around back window corners... peace of mind and a beautiful new top!!
-
imagine if it was a "W" code, some of us might need therapy...but lets face it a "U" code is bad enough!!
-
yes it would be interesting to see what that beauty sold for and contrasting to that little honey Dennis just pulled outta Texas, its so nice to see one cared for in this manner!!!
-
that looks like it might have been some kind of pine they are large above ground but as the pic shows not much of a root system/they like to fall over
-
sometimes worry will get you sooner than the chemicals it seems.... these guys were from a different generation and tough as nails
-
it may not run...but has a good chance of driving...driving you crazy that is ! and as Rob stated rusting out that good ole steel straight thru? that don't happen overnite. even new jerseys toxic acid rain would have to work at it

"pain, misery and happiness"? seems like one can't exist without the others... I didn't know him ,but to build your last engine at 92...and spend your life doing something you love...that's what it's all about! RIP sir!!
-
Congratulations very nice !
-
If it's optioned as you said...Why yes it is a shame... and totally unnecessary. Maybe it fell into the old "but no, I'm gonna restore it some day dear, I really am! As much as I would prefer to live in a perfect world ,sadly we do not so "ya can't save 'em all" but Dennis you sure do try and that's just great!!
-
wow dennis you do have alot of 'kids' sure must keep you busy!!

72 small block custom , van nuys plant... (late build? fisher body tag reads 3/72) spent about 24 years in CA, then 7 yrs in lynwood, WA I like what the owner had posted.. I have too many projects ,this car is too nice to sit around outside, "needs a new protective guardian" I guess that's me...nothing special ,a really fun driver ,needed some attention ,which she got...
-
thanks everyone! ...it seems like only yesterday i said...well, I'm new here, will I be comfortable at a "meet", maybe I shouldn't go ,blah blah but it was and is a great group, and so many great times. ..and yes I can't believe "yesterday" was 20 years ago!! happy to be part of it all...these members, like the first gens we cherish ,stand out from the crowd...thanks again!!

And as to patina ,a few months back the cover of Hagerty's "Drivers Club" magazine titled "the patina issue" very enjoyable article there's something to be said about a solid old machine that wears her mileage well...
-
i don't know... it sounds nice but that with 200k or so to burn, that would restore a nice group of montes ,which I personally would enjoy alot more... as one fellow member says, "just my 2 cents!"
-
12 years on parts place monte specific units, no problems at all... i would say do it when they are good and warm, and a couple holes may have to be opened up...the large washers cover the holes... good to go!!
-
that sure is great!! i don't have that system but wow what a treasure of info... and whenever I see the old tech sheets i say, hats off to the "draftsmen"!! no computers just all hand drawn-before the old plant I worked for went CAD, it was all hand drawn on the boards... those guys were amazing!!
-
you are right...my grandkids are strapped in like they are aboard the space shuttle...while we rolled around in the back of the wagon like watermelons.... and to boot doing our level best to distract the driver coming up behind us by waving like crazy thru the rear window... my my, how did any of us make it to "old age"
-
the one on the right can be no one other than Clark Griswald... just don't go airborne in YOUR chevy wagon!!
-
yessir! Q104.3 in the nyc area !! 12 noon memories of driving down the parkway to meet at my brother's...when my parents would come up from north carolina!! good stuff!!
-
Yes I was once in that camp too..."it can't be good to just let it sit there for months... better go and start 'er up !!" But seasoned mechanics concur with you, if you aren't going to get up to full operating temp for a period, just let it alone...not doing the engine internals and exhaust any favors..and what is that battery tender for anyway...
-
while its kinda hard to drain oil that looks so clean and only has several hundred miles on it, but as you guys have said, its composition changes before its appearance does...some sites say don't let it run more than a year no matter what... i've pushed it out on the Monte maybe 18 months or so ,unless like last year a run to the eastern meet in extremely high temps so next spring out it goes
-
that grille does look fantastic...now just for durability ,but with most of our cars garaged/ pampered/ spared from snow/salt and even rain as much as possible ,I have a good feel on this...
-
that was a great video...or should i say "film" not as dated as some of them but it never gets old seeing the pride in the plant and the motion shots going down the road.....and the PR guys were on their game too... the car broke down in the middle of the road sure don't look GM and then he gets cut off by a darn gremlin? yikes! (can u imagine if they HAD used another GM as the lane blocker? "but boss,we couldn't find another car" / that woulda made for a fun morning! anyway thanks for posting, it was great 0
