i sprayed carb cleaner all over the front back and sides of the carb with no improvement in idle. i also sprayed it all around the edge of the intake manifold with no improvement in idle. could this be due to a vac leak INSIDE the carb? is it safe to say i need a new carb? of course, spraying the carb cleaner into the carb helps the idle..... wish i could just switch the carb from my other monte, but it has a side loader fuel line, whereas this coke car has a front loading line. if i have to get a new carb, will i need a new line? or do they make an adapter? i'm googling around now....

I just got home and after talking to someone today, they said place a rag on top of the carb and see if it clears up.... Well, I placed a soft rag gently on top of the carb with the engine running and .... IT RUNS LIKE A CHARM!!!!!! So we have a vaccuum leak !! I'm trying to pinpoint the vaccuum leak with some carb cleaner now.... I'll be back in a few to give you all the results of that.

HEI ignition.... and it has been run in a pitch black garage with no visable arcing. Starting to hope that its a vaccuum leak around the intake..... I'll know more tonight when I return home

plugs wires and cap is relatively new even before i started trying to figure this thing out.... I have tried 2 different new plugs, and tried different wires, all with the same old result. The cap is in mint condition with nothing that i can see wrong with it. it has less than 200 miles on it.

how do you do that?

Here is some additional information, after reading these responses, thought it would help diagnose We switched the number 4 plug wire with the known good one from number 8, just to see if the problem would move. It did not. The problem stayed on 4, proving to me, not a plug wire. We pulled the cap and looked inside. There was no evidence of any arcing or deposits of any sort. Looked totally normal and had no cracking. It is relatively new. The plug is brand new. And 2 new ones have been used for testing. I am going to pull the valve cover again and look at the exact travel of the valves. I know they were moving..... and appeared to be moving the same as the rest. But I will inspect it more closely tonight. I will also look for a broken spring. Any and all other replies are very appreciated.

427 *TALL* big block 427 block with 454 heads and crank. This is a tall deck truck style motor. Engine is running rough and backfiring, seems like its running on 7 cyls..... When at idle, we found that pulling the #4 plug wire has no effect on engine. Other plug wires, when pulled, nearly stopped the engine from running. So the culprit is cylinder 4 for sure.. We discovered that plug #4 IS getting fire. Pulled the valve cover and the valves appear to be moving fine, like the other cylinders. Results of the compression test on cylinder 4 - 135 Lbs. Did a compression test on the neighboring cylinders 2 and 6... results 125 lbs each. What have I proved that is good? What have I proved that is bad? Surely this can be diagnosed with the testing I've done above. What does all this point to?

427 *TALL* big block 427 block with 454 heads and crank. This is a tall deck truck style motor. Right now we are doing some investigating. The current cam may be worn, causing a cylinder to be dead. Engine is running rough and backfiring. When at idle, pulling the #4 plug wire has no effect on engine. Plug #4 is getting fire. Pulled the valve cover and the valves appear to be moving fine, like the other cylinders... but we are going to do a compression test soon. The engine is pretty mild for a big block. When it was running good, it had a smooth idle. I want a mean ground pounding idle if I end up needing a new cam. What are your suggestions. Please remember this is a tall deck if that matters. And it is a stick shift car with no accessories except power brakes, and I know that opens up a lot of possibilities. I can afford a cam and lifter kit right now but nothing exotic. I am planning on leaving the rockers and pushrods and all that STOCK. What are my options for a rowdy sounding cam for my engine?

I echo all the sentiments above. Ronnie was a great guy, and he will be greatly missed by everyone who knew him. Prayers and thoughts for his family and friends.

thanks for putting this together. I am saddened by his loss and have lost a great friend, and I think this will be a great way of showing that we care so much.

I was asked by club management to call and keep contact with the family and I spoke to Glenda. To represent all of us in showing our support, etc.. I told her that the club has many friends who think the world of Ronnie and many thoughts and prayers have been sent that way. Glenda informs me that Ronnie is still in guarded condition but they did a procedure on him which is giving new reason for hope! He is starting to wake up; he crossed his feet and is starting to move his hands a bit. There is some brain activity, so the procedure they did on him worked, according to Glenda. She told me they are not outta the woods yet, but these new happpenings are beginning to give some hope. I am very glad to be able to report this. Hope we continue getting progressively good and better reports.

ronnie is my buddy, I think he is fantastic. Praying he is ok and not in much pain. And glenda his wife is an amazing person also. Love those two.

much respect for the lowriders and the community. If I'm standing at the grocery store at the magazine rack, usually the first thing I reach for is lowrider magazine. I am glad to see this forum. Been looking forward to it.

certain dark colors at a certain plant at a certian time in the production run i'm not sure about the details. mine was flint late built 70 black cherry, no black on the rockers.
-
some cars came factory with out black rockers at all. but the ones that did, it appears did not come with black at the bottom of the door.

Dick Harrell 1970 Monte Carlo SS454

Its Green, owned by Tim Pestinger. I got an email from Dick Harrells Daughter a while back hoping to get tim pestingers information. Dicks Daughter had some possible documentation and paperwork that might have matched the car, that she wanted to give to the pestingers. I called the pestingers and told them and gave them dicks daughters contact information. I asked the pestingers to please get back with me and let me know what was found and if it was a match, as i was curious and interested. I have never gotten a call back. -

i would love to know what the coke machine weighs.... it has a massive roll cage, but no front inner fenders, no heater, no air, a basically gutten interior, a fabbed dash. My fairmont though, it'll weigh in at a compact 2800 lbs when i'm finished with it.

i'm going to guess 9500
