  1. Thanks everyone.
  2. what material valve cover gaskets does everyone like best. I have always used cork with permatex . I see now they make silicone ones with a steel core. Can these be used without gasket sealer? I have heavy cast aluminum valve covers.
  3. Thanks for all the input. I'll go with black drums.
  4. I just put new American Racing wheels on my 71 Monte. The rear wheels are 15 x 8 with 4.5 backspacing and my rear tires are 275/60/15. No clearance issues. Now I have a question about painting the rear drums either black or red. any input would be appreciated.
  5. Scott I bought them from a shop called wheelsforless.com the 8" wide ones on the rear do have a 4.5 backspace. I measured them before I had the tires mounted.
  6. I bought them from Wheelsforless.com they are in Texas. Check them out. Great prices, free shipping, and no tax.
  7. Thanks James.

    Welcome to the club.
  11. I have a story similar to that. When I was 19 I bought a 69 Impala from a guy who let the front drum brakes go metal to metal. I paid $600 for the car. there was no pad material left and had to replace the drums as well. The metal dust was baked onto the backing plate, had to chisel it off. I drove that car for over 3 years.
  12. I would just change the intake manifold, put a 4 barrel carb, and dual exhaust. No headers or hei distributor.
  13. He was in a Veterans Nursing Home. About 2 years ago a Buffalo New York TV station had a segment honoring everyone in there.
  14. My Father Inlaw was a world war II vet. Was one of the ones who stormed the beaches of Normandy. He just passed away at 99 this past December.
  15. I set the timing at 12 degrees btdc with the vacuum line removed and plugged. Then when I plugged the line back to the vacuum advance the idle speed increased so I backed it off. Seems like throttle response from a dead stop is quicker. In gear I have it idling at 650 rpm. It's running great 👍
  16. I went with the factory one for the HEI distributor
  17. I replaced my vacuum advance canister on my distributor. Engine is running great.
  18. I like the look of 15" wheels on classic muscle cars. here's my 71. On the back I have 275/60/R15 and front 235/60/R15. This is my first car without Rally Wheels, But It came with them, and I think it gives the car a unique look. if I ever changed wheels I would go with 15" Torque Thrust.
  19. I've had Cooper Cobra tires in the past.
  20. Thanks everyone
  21. Yeah I bought that differential cover off Dennis last season.
  22. I put a rear sway bar on my Monte.
  23. My first new car I bought was a 1981 Camero. My winter car was a 1969 Impala. The 2nd winter the engine blew and I was trying to find another winter car . I bought a 1970 Monte carlo that was all rusted out and drove that back then for a few years, never realizing that that would be a classic, and I would own a really nice one 45 years later.
  24. I only say that because I got burned bad by an inspection company. I hired the Lemon Squad to look at a 70 out in Iowa. the car had everything I was looking for at the time. It had a 350 with a 700R4 transmission, headers, factory AC, air ride suspension. The inspector lied on the report, said he road tested it but never did. As soon as it came off the trailer I went up my driveway and NO BRAKES! after I fixed the brakes. Went for the first ride and the transmission wouldn't even shift. It had a camshaft that was way to aggressive. The only thing that was true about the car ,it was perfect cosmetically ,no rust ever ,paint was perfect, body was straight. Long story short. I ended up buying a 71 with only 40,000 miles only 2 miles from my house. It ran great, body and paint were straight. No rust ever, and I got it for a very low price. I transfered tons of parts from the 70 to the 71, and a friend that restores cars for a living found me a buyer for the 70 that just wanted that gen. Monte that was solid and didn't care about the engine and transmission. I lucked out but still lost some money. That's why I will always have to see a car myself before buying, and I am a perfectionist type of person. So everyone be careful of an inspection company unless you know them personally.
