The grounding connections are critical on the dash clusters. I have found that the new printed circuit mylar can partially cover the #10 screw grounding connection to the cluster can. From your old circuit determine the location of the grounding connection for the guages that are not working and ground it with a jumper to anypoint on the dash Steel frame.

Perhaps the casting date can explain why a '71 LS5 block has 4 bolt mains. A late '70 casting may have been used since there were no LS6 engines put in production cars in 1971. Also, it is possible that an engine rebuilder added 4 bolt main caps to the 512 block for racing purposes. There is no reason to specify 4 bolt mains for a stock LS5 which was detuned in 1971 with open chamber heads and a mild hyd. cam. Also, all 512 blocks are not the same. All LS6 blocks were machined for 4 bolt main caps and also oil cooling add ons. LS5 blocks do not have special provisions for oil cooling. One way to verify a LS6 block is to look for a plugged port on the driver side of the block behind the oil filter. Hope all this adds to the confusion ๐ Merry Christmas to all๐

Correction : incompatable

Now that you know you have the wrong carb make sure you search for the correct build date to match your car. Jeff Dotterer Dated parts in PA may be able to help you. I have a professionally rebuilt 7040202 which is for 1970 300hp cars. It is probably jetted pretty close for a 71 BB but not correct for a numbers matching car. Also, when you get the rigt one let me know if you need the correct choke assembly as shown in my attached pic. As you know, your choke rod is not correct either. Best
-
If you have a numbers matching car it should have the correct carb to be complete along with the alternator, water pump, etc. The safest thing to do is disconnect the choke until you get the correct carb. The slot and choke rod are compatible.

Hey Glen, I was just browsing through forum posts and saw yours. The picture showing your Carter built Qjet shows it is a 1970 carb. 7040200 in 1970 were on small blocks. You are correct in your later post that 1971 big blocks used 7041200 for automatic cars. I was in error saying your carb should be number 7041204 because its for a corvette which always had a higher HP rating. Hope this helps.

Great idea! Much better than using a come a long attached to a tree๐

Someone with a documented LS6 car without the correct motor would love to buy it to complete his car. As stated before, if it has factory 4 bolt main caps it definitely is a LS6 based on the late 69 date code. 360/390 hp Corvettes were LS 5 which have 2 bolt mains. If you would like to verify what it is you can reach out to Chris White in New York or engine builder known as big block Bruce who is an expert on this topic. Otherwise you only have hobbiest opinions to go by. Best
-
I dont think they were ever used on Montes . Corvettes had them on big blocks.
-
I think another members comments are correct. If it's a 1968 , 512 block then it was a 427 engine before being bored
-
LS 5 blocks were all 2 bolt mains
-
If its has factory 4 bolt mains its an LS6 block because late tonawanda engines were made for the 1970 model year. Thats when then discontinued the 375 hp 396/402
-
If it's a 4 bolt main block dated late 69 then it is a valuable 1970 LS6 BLOCK. Chris White, who restores '70 LS6 cars may want to purchase it. Good Luck

Looking for top radiator cover
70SS396 replied to TommyLCoulter's topic in Cars and Parts For Sale/Wanted
I have the bottom corner which gets welded to the core core support as required for a 4 row radiator. Jeff Dotterer may have an original top plate. -
Happy to help you . The slot in the choke linkage doesn't seem right to me for that year. Probably why wire clip got hung up creating an unsafe situation as you described. .
-
If you car is a 1971 big block with th400 tranny the correct carb number is : 7041204 unless it was a california car.
-
You welcome. Let me know if you need help with verifing the correct carb. Need: year, engine and transmission (auto or 4 speed)
-
If it was pink and lavender, new prospects would want to be members asap.๐

That's great. I was afraid I would be pink for 5 years๐

Are there a lot of women in the club? Just wondering why pink. Thanks

What color is a 2,3 and 4th year member?

Also, it would be good to know if the carb and choke linkage is compatible. Meaning the correct choke, rod and associated carb linkage which is intended for the Qjet model number. For example, a 1970 Qjet has a round hole for the choke rod connection not a slot as shown in your pic. Hope this helps you find the correct solution to avoid a reocurrence of a stuck throttle.
-
It appears that the choke is a for a small block car. Big block choke rods and retainer clip is different . The clip is round and shouldn't hange up in the choke linkage slot. Will try to send you a pic if I can figure out how since I am new here.

1971 center console neutral safety switch.
70SS396 replied to Whons's topic in Cars and Parts For Sale/Wanted
I think you are referring to the ignition switch that is white higher up on the column. The neutral safety switch and integral back up light switch is as shown in the picture on a automatic transmission car. Its the same switch which is mounted on the lower column on a column shift automatic car. The neutral safety switch on a manual transmission is white and completely different but is connected to the clutch pedal . Hope this info helps to clarify this topic. -

I am pretty sure it is the same switch thats on a column shift car.
