Yours is a '72 Monte, correct ? Running it without a cap, does not do anything to it really. A closed/working cap ,sends the vapors up into the "can", located behind the rear seat. You have 2 lines for that system I believe, plus 2 vent lines on each side of tank. If any of those lines have any dry rot/cracks, that will cause the problem you are having. Known as vapor lock, air is getting into your feed line and causing the running out of fuel. I would check/replace those hoses first. 53 yrs is quite some time for fuel hoses to last. Mine are going on 17yrs, and are being replaced when I change tanks for EFI, regardless on how they look. Preventive maintenance does pay off.

Man, What size is that harmonic balancer? Looking good! Let's make some torque!

Yup, I'm buying one, but only to store car while I do some "cleaning up " around the shop. I have 2 other "projects" (along with the other 6 going on right now), so my time is always "booked". 2018 EZ Hauler (20' footer w/o the V). All Aluminum (floor included),beaver tail design, with aluminum ramp and extension. Now ,I have just ordered the Mac's tie downs (8'),because the "D" rings are close to the front and rear of the trailer. Oh, almost forgot, has the swing out side door also .Going to get it in the morning. Thoughts?

Sorry I could not help with the part #, but that's the one! Can't go wrong with it.should not need a shim either. Mine bolted right in with the stock bolts and no cat noises when starting......... I hate that!

Just go to the auto parts store and ask for a'97 Tahoe Starter. Bolts right in ,Easy, peasy !!🙂

Swapping TH350 for TH400 (Need Tips)

Well,at least there not white shoes like someone else. -
Dennis, use a lot of windex when flaring that stainless line. acts as a "lube" so it doesn't tear the metal.
-
I would invest in a new gas cap before I drop that tank.Seems that could be the problem to me. Little money across the counter for an easy fix. Also that filter in the carb only goes in one way. Almost forgot, anything leaking on your lines coming from the tank? It would be wet in front of the tank where the rear axle is.

That's for sure! I don't see any Monte Carlo script on the vinyl top. Must have been replaced? Sure looks nice though.
-
Just put it down on your "to do list" later in the build, but if you are putting the engine/trans in, that will do it. Lookin' good! At that speed of assembly, you should have it done say, next week?

Welcome, I too, like the Olds wheels! Nice Monte you have there. Are there many First Generation Monte Carlo's in your country? That stripe looks very nice on it also.

I'm still there yet on the ride. Sometimes, and not all the time, it feels like it's bouncing just a tiny bit. I readjusted the front shocks a bit and is acting better. I may go just a little more on the rebound side and see what happens. I think I'm at 2 and 6 on the dials. might go to 8. I have the rear set up for drag race mode. Man, after I installed the Hellwig axle style sway bar, it just plants the tires! -
Now That's one BEA-utiful Trophy Bryan!! Well deserved............🤔 , "now where do I to put this".

Looks nice to me for that price!!

While your there on your frame and all the upgrades ,you should invest in this cross brace for the rear shocks.UMI Performance has it. It will be a lot easier with the body off the frame for sure! And also add the Hellwig axle style rear sway bar (UMI Performance makes one also). Bolts to your rear axle with front heim joint connectors in front that bolt to the upper control arm crossmember. You'll be happy with the results (Ask me ,I know). -
What did you do to your Monte Carlo today?

Took my good friend Dan Devine (who helped me with my Monte Build, back in '04-'08),out for dinner in the Monte. He's up from Florida visiting. We took a good ride in it to the restaurant (no issues). Got on it, just a little bit when we left, and on the way back home. When we pulled into the Hotel, the exhaust blew another donut gasket at the manifold, and there was a grinding noise (intermittent). I also noticed my volt gauge was only reading 8 volts, and the whine of a belt sound. Pulled into a gas station, the alternator belt was still on (loose), and the brace from the water pump had come loose. That grinding sound was the bolt into the water pump pulley. Talk about luck!! Had that bolt been dropped along the way, this Monte would have to be towed home last night! Had it back and fixed in no time(always a tool box in the trunk). Now, I have to say,I have been checking things here and there,(nut and bolt check) since it's been back on the road, nothing this major yet. I still can't understand why these exhaust donuts keep failing. Last drive from Syracuse National's , I had one go on the driver's side. These are not cheapo's either. going to have to get to the bottom of this problem. Oh, and no pictures, I left my phone at home! ( Dan can attest to that ! ) -
A Beauty for sure! Boy, they sure have risen in $$ . Makes the others go up in price I hope. Shame the family has to let it go though.

Initial is 10-12 degrees. If you have an advancing timing light (degree dial on back of gun), you can see what full advance is at 3,000rpm(34-36 degrees). Always ,idle should be at 700rpm (in drive), then when adjusting your carb, adjustments will be correct. I do not like a distributor with no vacuum advance. This tends to put total in right at the start (pinging in the engine). My BBC 427 likes 38 degrees total. Like Doug said, different cam specs call for this. My cam is "advanced " 4 degrees ,more bottom end torque.

Welcome to the Club Rick !! Semper Fi brother!! Sounds like the one you had was a '72 "Custom". Only year they were made. Lots of information here on all 1st Gens. Questions? ask away, always someone here to give you good advice. Just letting you know , we like to spend other people's money on here. It's that old "snowball" effect.

What did you do to your Monte Carlo today?

While at the Carlisle show I had a problem with my rear sway bar after I had installed the rear coil over relocation kit from UMI Performance. Seems it moves the stock style rear sway (1 1/4"Dia.),way low from the rear axle. Checked with UMI and was told I had the wrong sway bar (even though it came in a kit),but I had purchased that sway many years ago before the coil over swap. They have the correct bar now in their kit. So, as we were sitting bench racing, I raise the question and a member says " I have what you need" . So , at the Syracuse show he brings the correct style rear sway bar with him, and Gives it to me! . Says " I don't need it , put it on your car". I just installed it and Man, does it plant the tires now! It's a Hellwig 1 3/8"Dia. bar, that mounts onto the axle and upper control arm crossmember(that was a job getting those brackets in),but came out perfect. On the front ends of the sway bar it has 3 locations for the heim joints to be bolted into for different settings (furthest to the front, street driving),really makes a difference in handling. -
It looks like water coming out of the top trim. that's not a crack in the paint/bodywork !

That depends on what kind of driving you're doing with it. I've had a Corvette style pan with a flapper in front of the oil pump (8qt pan), on the street('55 chevy pickup) , that also has a side baffle for road racing. If you're driving on the street, no need have a windage tray. No need for 6,500 rpm's. Now upwards of 7,500-9,000 rpm's ,definitely a tray. Road course 302 cu.in chevy., windage tray, 8 qt pan with baffle and trap door around oil pump. Shifting gears near the 10,000 range. average rpm (8,200-8,400),with only a 4speed. Now that's a class act! Vintage SCCA road course '68 Camaro. That pan you had on it seems to be your drag racing it?
-
That to me is a little much. .025"-.030 max. Did you center the rim with one at 7 o clock ( bottom) , other at 2 o clock (top) ? That's how I do my Vintage wheels every time. Never a problem. Where is this coming in and better, do you drive out of it? And also I keep a good eye on lug nuts and replace after about 10 times on / off. Found some faulty ones. I now buy NHRA approved only lug nuts. Summit has those.

Looks nice!! That will be a strong bottom end. Rods? 10:5 to 1 will be perfect! Your on your way!!
