  1. Trans is out and shimming starter. I had to cut some shims to 1/4 the size to get the gear where it is now. The paperclip slides in with a little play but not much. I know its hard to tell with pictures sometimes because the camera angle is different. The picture Starter 1 (2nd picture) shows it best. Does this look close enough or do I need to bring it in so the paperclip is tight? Thanks
  2. I am thinking about changing to a 4 spoke "NK4 SPORT STEERING WHEEL" . Would I just need the steering wheel and guts for horn and stuff? Or would I need an adapter too? There kinda pricy but thinking about changing. I have a standard steering wheel now. Car has non-tilt floor shift. Thanks I was looking at this : https://www.ebay.com/itm/4-SPOKE-NK4-SPORT-STEERING-WHEEL-KIT-71-81-CAMARO-76-79-VET-71-76-NOVA-ORK7181/153895713448?_trkparms=aid%3D1110006%26algo%3DHOMESPLICE.SIM%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D20140131123730%26meid%3D1d791c12732842c0a84501cc742f53b0%26pid%3D100167%26rk%3D2%26rkt%3D15%26mehot%3Dlo%26sd%3D383703913206%26itm%3D153895713448%26pmt%3D0%26noa%3D1%26pg%3D5411%26algv%3DDefaultOrganic%26brand%3DOER&_trksid=p5411.c100167.m2940
  3. My monte has had BFG's since I owned it in 1989. I always liked the way they looked better than anything around even the Coopers. I had that same issue with the discoloration after buying a new set of BFG's 4 years ago. Like you guys said they knew about the issue but nothing was done,. I ended up getting coopers last year. Funny thing is the Coopers seem to actually ride a bit better. Maybe thats its in my head , but the Coopers haven't discolored 😀
  4. Im in the same boat. With the shipping and core charges you might wanna try and find someone local /close to you. I was lucky to find someone locally and mainly does th400 and power slides. https://www.proformanceracingtransmissions.com/. Good Luck !!!
  5. I shimmed it. I didn't do the Half shim, I cut it about a quarter length. You can see it on the starter mount bolt on the right side. Scary how well the cell phones pictures can be 🙂
  6. Thanks guys. I installed the new flywheel. checking the starter clearance. I thought it was supposed to be about the distance of a large paperclip. Is this too much clearance? Thanks again for all your advice.
  7. So I ordered the Same Brand Flexplate that is on the car. Pioneer inc. They appear to be practically the same. Original one "November - 2012 made in USA" New one December 2020 "Made in Mexico. Only difference I really see is 4 Holes drilled on new flywheel bottom to the right of weight. Being external balance anyone know if this is just bolt on or should I contact builder? But its been so long out they have records of it...
  8. Thanks guys, I ordered what appears to be the same flywheel. I will verify once it comes in . Ive had an oil drip for some time. Not horrible but annoying. The engine builder in my opinion did a shoddy job of gaskets, I also asked him to use brass - freeze plugs and they didn't. . The pan was sealed with a silver sealant from the builder. There is oil that drips by the bottom of the rear main seal metal on the pan. I can't confirm if its actually the rear main though. The corners were gooped with that siver stuff. Some was hanging loose. So I cleaned the silver gasket sealer off and there you see the pan Gasket. I cleaned everything up with alcohol and sealed it with RTV Black. I painted up the freeze plugs plugs , painted flaked off didn't want rust to pop them ... Only time will tell.
  9. It was, and I believe it does. I dropped it off to get done again. I pulled the flexplate and doesn't seem as bad as I thought it was. Teeth seem ok. What do you guys think? If I did replace it Im not sure how I would since its externally balanced. That was done when motor was built. Here are the pictures.
  10. Same , Breather on Passenger side, PCV on Drivers side.
  11. I ended up pulling the trans and dropping it off. There at a 7 to 10 week turnaround time. I knew that before dropping it off. Thinking about pulling the flywheel possible replacement since I had starter issues previously and wore the teeth down a little. She still starts fine but wonder if I should since I am in there. Only thing is its a 454 and flywheel is externally balanced. Can I get a new one and have the balance mirrored onto the new one?
  12. I did check the transmission dipstick . Here is a picture of it
  13. If its as you described and a true SS. My opinion definatly worth the 25 g's, Thats a good deal. True SS hard to find, and cars expensive to restore. Paperwork always a plus 🙂 Good luck and post a lot of pictures when you get her !!!!
  14. Finally talked to the original builder. He said shouldn't be an issue the fluid I used was fine. I forgot to mention that I also have a G/V overdrive witch works really well. But when in O/D and coming to a stop it hits, downshifts a little hard only with the O/D when I have it on. He said adding the O/D is harder on the Convertor? Think Im gonna pull it and have it looked at. At this point not sure if it will be with his shop or another. They are reliable but there is a shop right by them that does racing transmissions. Not that I need a racing trans but maybe that would bt the better option. Thanks guys
  15. I remember calling the builder to ask what fluid to use. I do not remember about the Synthetic part or not though. Im gonna call the builder and that other shop on monday to see options.
  16. The B&M converter was the culprit in 2016. It was replaced by a custom convertor they had built by another shop for them and They rebuilt the transmission. I don't think they did it wrong, I just don't think it was built as heavy duty as it should have been, Or I used wrong fluid. I was using the 4 core Radiator cooler along with an external trans cooler mounted in front. I also have the deep Aluminum trans pan. I do not have a trans temp gauge. Fluid type maybe ? I was running "Valvoline DEXRON-V1 Full Synthetic"...
  17. I am not sure of the power level of the engine. The build is listed belowI attached the cam specs. Roller cam and lifters. The rebuild in 2016 was done by a trans shop in area. He actually rebuilt it 20 years prior to that and it lasted. If I have it rebuilt I am looking at different shop, I found one kinda in the area since they actually list th400's. https://www.proformanceracingtransmissions.com/contact. I had the engine rebuilt in 2014 and only upgraded the torque converter stall at the time. The new B&M TORQE CONVERTER I installed is what went out on the trans in 2016, coins/Marbles in a coffee can all the time. Thats when I had the current trans rebuilt and new torque converter. I also added a GV overdrive in 2019 that is a total separate unit. Thanks Engine build and Cam Specs : Engine Cubic Inches: 468 Compression Ratio: 10.1 Intake Manifold Brand: Edlbrock AIR GAP RPM Cylinder Head Type: Brodix race rite oval port Intake Valve Diameter: 2.250 in. Exhaust Valve Diameter: 1.880 in Fuel Pump: Mechanical Transmission Type: TH-400 Header : 1 7/8" Rear End Gear : 3.73 PRO-System 4150 Carburator .............................................................................
  18. I had to replace starter mid summer. I found two of my torque converter bolts had backed out. So I removed them cleaned them . Then I Loctiited and tourqed them down. That was prior to me hearing that noise.. Its possible the noise I heard was not the Trans, but it sure sounded like what I heard when it blew back in 2016. There are no chunks in the pan. Not to be a broken record But is just so much fine material for only having 4000 miles ...
  19. I pulled the trans and brought it in. I did flush the lines and cooler with parts cleaner and air hose when she was out. The sound happened when the car was in drive, but I was stopped with foot on brake. Once in a parking lot and twice at stop lights. The best way to describe the sound would be like coins in a coffee can, very briefly only for a couple seconds then nothing. It's of those sounds that stands out when you know your car. Of course my wife looked at me like what are you talking about. ...The magnetic plug was caked with material 1/8 inch thick, I wish I took a picture before I cleaned it. The clean spot in the trans pan is where i wiped it down to see how thick it was.. Its street driven. Yes I beat on it and shift it a lot but not a 1/4 mile car. It just seems like a heck of a lot of material for 4000 miles..
  20. IN 2016 I was pulling back into the driveway and I heard what sounded like change (coins) in the converter. It was really bad so I had to pull the trans and get it rebuilt. I belive it was the converter that blew. I heard that same noise for only a few seconds on three different ocasions last times I had the car out. The drain plug was covered at least an 1/8 of an inch thick with metallic material I thought was just clutch pack. And I know there is some clutch pack that gets worn off and leaves a film. I just thought this was pretty excessive in the pan and in addition to hearing the noise I am concerned. Thanks guys .
  21. Hello, TH-400 trans. It was rebuilt by a shop in 2016 , new torque converter and all. Trans has maybe 4000 miles on it and there is a lot of slugs in pan. Prior to putting her away for winter I heard what sounded like noise from the torque converter a couple time when driving. So do I pull her and have rebuilt ? Check out the pics .
  22. Does someone happen to have a picture of the header by the Oil filter and Steering wheel lock linkage 😉 Thanks
  23. Ya yours are defiantly tucked up nice. Car looks great , love the wheels. No one wants to pay a lot but I am willing if it fits right. It seems like everything I get some other change needs to be made though. Nature of the beast. It looks like it may be the ARH. I also found this place GP Headers in Minnasota. They have a kit you buy to mockup your headers. Send them the mocks ups and they build your headers. The nice thing is you can be sure it will fit everything. The down side like everything is the cost. Thanks again guys !! https://www.gpheaders.com/products/custom-headers/
  24. Thanks guys. I have gone back and read through that other post as well. I would be going with the 1 7/8. I reached out to Dan - Overdrive since he has the 7 1/8 installed. He said "plenty of room for the original starter. One tube is close to the valve, but it doesn't touch it and never had a heat issue with it. The only thing I found that I didn't like is that the driver side header is in the way of the backdrive linkage from the transmission" Here is a better look at how low my patriots hang.
  25. Thats Awesome !!!! Congrats !!! It does work great 😃
