Hey Scott, here is a LS-6 Build Sheet and it is denoted smack dab in the middle top line.... Darren.
-
Hey Nate, you told me it was a 70 Baldwin Motion LS-6 Monte Carlo.....? and had a M-19 tranny in it..! HAHAHA.... Darren.
-
Two different ways to go here...Which do you have Benchseat or buckets and console..??? The list can get lengthy, let us know what you have to start with and we can give you a list combined as some of us members just did swaps including myself as I just finished and with me doing all the work to save labor costs it was still.$2000 Darren.

Thanks Mike...I just got that image of "Wheel" in that pink dress out of my mind and you just put it right back up front and center again....Did anyone happen to see that picture last month or so.??? The Optomatrist said the Burning Eye sensation would go away...argggg!!! hahahahahahahahaaaaahahahahahahaha

Yep, I think Bill is onto something here..... My guess would be your Purple wire down on the solinoid has come loose and as Bill said it has leaned over far enough it is touching the Positive battery cable in the middle and the starter is engaugeing... Sorry cant help you with the Chipmunks.... Darren.

Hey Willie, those Lower ball-joints are a pain they have to be pressed in so paint the surface face after they are in and then screw in the grease nipple (dont paint nipples). Uppers just drop in and held down with allen key bolts and nylocks so paint those out first and same info on nipples after. The steering linkage I cleaned mine up gunwashed them off and taped up the fittings and sprayed the whole thing Argent silver same as rally wheels and then cleared them after and installed. be carefull that the clearcoat is from the same manufacturer as diff makes can cause the paint to run or not cure.....Just my 2 cents as others will chip in too and help..... Darren.

Hey Kevin, where in Edmonton are you.?? I am in Airdrie and use a company called Green Line in Calgary (3 locations) and there should be ones in Edmonton. They custom make 'T's" 90's and all tranny and PS lines to conform to any fit, sometimes they look really weird and you would wonder what application they would fit but they obviously work...Give them a try as I have had success with them lots with no problems and prices are reasonable.... Darren.

Hey MG, I dont have a picture but here is one on an Ebay listing and it shows on a parts list 70 chevelle and 70 monte etc.... Ebay # 200615080921

This what I got from Ground up Restoration and GM here locally, Disc brake hold off valve or step off valve..... "Part Description: This valve was used to hold off pressure to the rear brakes so the front brakes would go on a split second before. This was also considered a correction valve for the 1970 model year. During extreme braking conditions, this valve prevented the car from getting sideways and evened out braking loads (step off). This valve is located at the rear of the car, mounted to the back cross member close to where the rubber brake hose attaches through the frame. Darren.

Hey Rob, I knew of a guy that had a 70 chevelle that changed starters and it made a heck of a racket even with shiming it lots or not the sound was ridiculous. when it was bench tested it was fine, but what was discovered late in the game was when comparing the old one with the new one the Bull nose on the new starter where the bendix shoots out the gear was slightly longer and what the problem was the bendix was shooting out the gear so far it was overshooting the flywheel slightly and the gear backstop was hitting the flywheel as well as the gear.. John went with a Wilson rebuild instead and the bullnoses were identical and absolutly NO noise at all..... the size difference was almost hardly noticeable but you had too look real hard at it to see it....... Darren.

Ok....I have noticed nobody has asked what year the Monte carlo is.???? as 1970 had a proportion valve off the master and 71-72 didnt, and the distribution block is down on the frame by the oil filter area, and in the rear there is a step off valve on the rear cross frame above the rear axle....My money is on that rear Step off valve is Shot...which is more square and about the size of a US Dollar coin. Just my 2 cents worth... Darren.

Tire Brand Recommendations PLEASE ...
LS5 replied to Mike Brichta's topic in Brakes and Suspension Tech
Hey Mike, if your after Raised White Letters still but different than BFG and is acceptable for obvious reasons unless you burn them off...Go with what I have on the chevelle, from Coker Tire in a radial but has the Bias Ply look...A G70 Firestone Wide Oval "O" Tire?? They were a equivilant of a 235-70-15 I believe and have white letters and I get asked all the time are they the original tires as they are cool and have the factory look with letters.... just my 2 cents worth.. Darren. -
My 70 454 has the "ball type" stud that bolts to the side of the Date coded 70 Rochester linkage and the throttle linkage has the ball indentation clip that holds the two together....
-
This is all the info I got off the sheet if you can make head or tails of it, I went with what they recommended but bearing in mind I needed Vacuum for brakes as it is a 4spd car too...so I hope nothing rediculous as it has yet to see the streets...waiting for new set of shifter rods and levers to arrive... Competition 502 Rotating Assemblies Recommended for use up to 850 HP (1500 HP with optional ARP L-19 bolts) balanced and blueprinted coraspond to LS-6 heads part no. COMP CAM 11601-4. Darren.

Hey scott here is my 2 cents worth which may or may not be right but someone will let you know if it's right.. CRW 454 270hp TH-400 4bbl This would be a "W" Code Monte Carlo...I believe the W Code replaced the SS as it was not offered in 1972 just 70-71. as far as its value compared to the other two years I will leave that to the other guys...But I am guessing no...., but its still worth something to the right buyer.... Darren.

So how does that work on Dans car..? It is denoted as what I think from other sources like team chevelle and Dan Carr that his code is a 4spd block code yet his car has a th400 from factory and he has a build sheet too, also all 4 cars used CRQ as an LS-5 code. Both monte and chevelle as 360hp in 1970 and the vette and impala at the 390hp all CRQ??
-
I thought the monte carlo was a chevy and the codes are not specific so I thought..?? The list was from Team chevelle and those codes are for corvettes and impalas too. The CRN is the code from your block that says that BLOCK is a manual block not an automatic block. And with GM doing so many goofy things back in the day you could have a rare monte that is denoted as a automatic yet the factory chucked in a manual coded block, just ask around there are lots...hence the guessing on weather or not there is an LS-6 monte carlo that may have gotten the wrong engine... Didnt mean to offend anyone with a free block code list that wasnt claimed to be perfect...

From my neck of the woods, on the 70 Chevelle SS. The LS-6 had different heads and intake and carb from the LS-5, also NO LS-6 Chevelle ever came with AC but did have Smog like the LS-5, it is also Denoted on the Build Sheet as a LS-6 454-450HP and yes on those block codes mentioned except it was CRT not CRS sort of, CRS was 450HP but that code was for the Aluminum headed 454 and only 18 pairs were sold back in 1970 so if you have a pair of those you have a small fortune sitting there.... The 1970 Corvette had the LS-6 as well. I also know that Tach & gauges were an option but on "The King of The Hill " cars as they called them the LS-6 came standard with Tach and Gauges. The Cowl Induction Hood cars had the air element that sealed to the hood via rubber ring and the Fresh air hood (ducted but no flapper) had a Double Snorkle air cleaner on them.Redline on the Tach was different too and 373 or 411 gears in the rear, and I believe the rest was optional on the chevelle wise unless Nate or Crazy Dave can correct me....??? Darren. Darren.

Thanks guys for the compliments, many hours went into just cleaning up the engine bay and firewall and the frame as well. I started to keep track and took lots more pics as I went along and it seams insane how many hours inc all the stuff to get powder coated and then Painting the firewall and frame and the rad support. Mark I got the Heat Shield off Ebaymotors and if you can believe it it ended at 2am and was listed incorrectly and I got it for as huge $24.95 starting bid and then realised after from another source they are still availible from GM out of the US,and also right this pic was taken just before we slapped on the Dated spark plug wires and dropped in a Pertronix distributor and the belts and some extra's and then she fired up...I took the chance to add some hidden goodies even though it looks stock...hidden are Kieth Black Pistons and a Comp Cam and haveing the crank turned 10/10 and larger Valves into the LS-6 Heads...so the Bias Ply Firestone wide oval O's are going to be toast with about 420hp. Just got to get the linkage sorted out on the M-21 and then put in the 331's in the diff and hopefully enjoy it sometime this summer..???? Darren.

After spending more money than I wanted too which seams to always happen on the Chevelle the 454 is completely rebuilt and back in with M-21 attached and running.Big thanks to Vaughn,Roy,Keith for all the help.... Darren.

Hey Mike, What type of oil are you using??? Is it thick enough for the viscosity needed and does it have any Zink in it.??? I am running a 70 LS-5 in the chevelle and the Lucas Zink additive has made it so all I can hear is the engine with no rattle or ping or exhaust leak...And I know Vaughn is running a 502 in his 70 Monte and is using a higher Viscosity oil and a Zink additive and the same thing, just engine noise and thats it.... Just an idea thats all.....Darren.

Just thought I would share a list I found surfing late last night....really late...Darren. SS Monte Carlos were built in 1970 and 1971. No SS Monte Carlos were built in 1972. The only way to get the SS was with a 454 (LS5 only). Note that in 1972 you could get a 454 Monte Carlo - without the SS option. (W-CODE). No 4-speed 454 Monte Carlos were built ! And no 4-speed 1972 Monte Carlos were built with any engine. Here are some production totals for the rarer Monte Carlos: 1970 350/Powerglide: 7,507 cars (L65 2-bbl and L48 4-bbl / M35) 1970 350/3-speed manual: 545 cars (all were L65 2-bbl) 1970 350/4-speed: 935 cars (L65 2-bbl and L48 4-bbl / M20) 1970 400/4-speed: 123 cars (all were LF6 2-bbl 400 small-block / M20) 1970 400/TH-350: 16,472 cars (all were LF6 2-bbl 400 small-block / M38) 1970 402/4-speed: 493 cars (all were LS3/M20) 1970 402/TH-400: 6,963 cars (all were LS3/M40) 1970 SS-454/TH-400: 3,823 cars (all were LS5/M40) 1971 350/Powerglide: 2,056 cars (all were L65 2-bbl / M35) 1971 350/3-speed manual: 280 cars (all were L65/M11) 1971 350/4-speed: 227 cars (L65 2-bbl and L48 4-bbl / M20) 1971 402/4-speed: 122 cars (all were LS3/M20) 1971 402/TH-400: 8,511 cars (all were LS3/M40) 1971 SS-454/TH-400: 1,919 cars (all were LS5) 1972 350/Powerglide: 576 cars (all were L65 2-bbl / M35) 1972 350/3-speed manual: 342 cars (all were L65/M11) 1972 402/TH-400: 9,959 cars (all were LS3/M40) 1972 454/TH400: 1,268 cars (all were LS5/M40)
