  1. I need to start thinking about what I want to do for real.... either beef up the 12 bolt or start building a 9"

I like the thought of a 9" just because its a lot easier to change the gears... Could use one set of gears for everyday cruising around or whatever and then another set of gears for when I want to play at the track... but its not that important to me as I will probably just run something around a 3.42 rear gear. I dont think Ill need anymore than that at the track and its not to bad on the street. Another thing with the 9" is no c-clips.... yes I could get c-clip eliminators but Ive heard that they can leak if you drive a lot on the street. I like the 12 bolt because its a GM rear and Id like to keep it... Not to mention it would save me some money on buying a 9" housing...

What all do you guys think would seriously have to be done to the 12 bolt to run 9's with a supercharged big block? Not to say that I will be running 9's but just incase I ever do try for it... A friend of mine and I are in kind of an ET race... smile

Would I have to do anymore than; welding the axle tubes, girdle rear end cover, after market axles (what spline do you think?), 1/2" studs, c-clip eliminators or 9" housing ends (What do you think would be best?). That is all I can think of... anything else I might have to do?

When I do put a supercharger on the 460 Im gonna be trying for about 750-800 HP.... To give you more of an idea....

    Thanks, Tom

  2. Everyone always worries about the rear end and transmission and no mind really gets paid to the driveshaft that I have noticed... Does anyone know how much abuse a stock drive shaft can take? What kind of material is the next step above stock? thanks, Tom

  3. Very nice smile One of these days I might need one of those... When I started building my car I wanted it to be a sleeper, a cage kinda gives it away smile Then again, the way my Monte sounds doesnt exactly hide that its fast...

  4. Thanks guys smile I think I will get the transpak. Straight manual valve bodies do suck to a point... I use to have a 71 Chevelle and the trans went out on it. We had one out of a car that we never drove but was told the trans was good, so anyway we put this trans in the Chevelle and I started the test drive. Drove around for about 20 minutes trying to get it to shift into second, was checking things out jumping on the gas blah blah blah. Eventually I though Ill try to shift it myself just for the hell of it and bam second and third I went smile Ended up getting a speeding ticket as soon as I figured it out.... Oh well it happens. After about a week though it did get old, I kept forgetting to put it back in first and had to stop do it right, if I tried to goto first while the car was moving it wouldnt shift to second. Anyway it did get old so if I did do a valve body it would prolly be a auto/manual. I think I would be a little better about remembering to shift with the Monte but its prolly best to have a manual/auto anyway smile

  5. Hey, just wondering I have a turbo 400 that is gonna be in my Monte behind my big block... gonna be a strip/street car I dont mind shifting the gears myself for the manual valve body... What would be my best bet.... Manual valve body, Manual/Auto valve body or a shift kit or valve body and a shift kit? I dont know much about trannys... any ideas? Thanks, Tom

  6. Yeah I know about the gear vendor but very expensive. I want the tranny to handle what ever I can throw at it. I will prolly end up building my th400 and saving for a gear vendor.... Sounds like a reasonable idea smile Thanks

  7. The more and more I look at comparisons between a th400 and 700r4's Im thinkin Ill just build up my th400 and possibly save some headaches.... What kind of gas mileage you guys think a 700 might give vs the th400 as well as track times.... Thanks again smile Tom

  8. Do you guys know what a 30 spline 700r4 with upgraded servos and clutches would hold up against? Will be around 600 HP hard ran..... Should I just eat the gas mileage and build my TH400? Thanks, Tom

I have a big block by the way.... and street/strip with street slicks....

  9. K thanks I know some have dual patterns but this one doesnt... frown Theres a TH400 on ebay that has titanium gears and shift kit and all the works but its Olds.... Ill prolly just build mine... Dont really need titanium anyway... smile
