10 bolt 8.5 inch GM corporate rear end

If it is A 12 bolt BOP they had 8.5 but gears not interchangeable with chevy 10 or 12 bolt

I have a 72 Monte with7.5/7.625 rear end. axle code says it is 2:73 open. Now it has a weird rear cover that looks like a 10 bolt 8.5. After some searching I found GM used these in some 70 - 72s like cutlass, GTO and Monte Carlos. It says they have the bolt in axles but did not say if they were BOP.

  2.  I am more concerned on your bore size 4.178" . A sbc 400 block is 4.125" std bore. I hope your not running 350 style heads without a "steam hole" in them. This other information is on your "487 "heads, courtesy of Mortec.com     Cylinder head number  #3973487....71-72...350..........1.94/1.5 or 2.02/1.6 valves, was also used on '71 350/330hp LT1, 75cc chamber

Cylinder head  #3973487X...71-72...350..........1.94/1.5 or 2.02/1.6 valves, 75cc chamber

You can look on the Mortec.com website and see what you do have. I'd say those 041cyl.heads would be a good set of heads by themselves (64cc).

I am sorry the bore is stock 4.018

  3. it is an 014 68-79 block mortech says 3970014....350...70-76...2 or 4 The motor had 487 heads on it. I pulled the heads off to put a set of 186 heads on. when I got the 487 heads off I found flat top pistons and a .014 deck height. checked the bore and found it to be 4.178. The 186 heads had been reworked and decked to 58cc chambers. so I am stuck. I need to figure out if it is worth doing the 487 heads or buying something off the shelf.

  4. engine #'s say it is a 68 to 79 350 ci another site says it is 70-72 350 with 2 or 4 bolt mains. the 186 heads I just noticed today are drilled for a 400. I am wondering with the deck height and flat tops if I could run an L46 replacement cam and still run 93 octane. talked to a couple Techs and they both said I would be looking at 13+ cr with the 186 heads. So I am going with the 487 heads ported and a crane 100072 cam. should put me around 350 hp/  Thank 420 for responding

Fellow Monte  people. OK I bought a set of 186 heads very reasonable from guy who was cleaning his dads's garage who had recently passed away and all he knew was they were off of a 69 Chevelle his dad had. Now they were filthy and I just took them to a head shop to get checked and refreshed if good. I was going to put them with a crane 10005 cam on my 350 which is a 014 block. While they were there. I pulled my 487 heads off and to my surprise had flat top pistons. checked the bore and deck height and got 4.018 bore and .014 deck height. Then they called and said heads were ready. When I got there he asked what the hell I was building. The heads were 2.02/1.6 Manley stainless w/ hardened seats and bronze guides with 58 cc chambers. Can I do anything with this combination or do I have to go all new with the thinking. cause this sounds like somewhere around 11:1 _11.5:1 CR This is just a driver and goes to local shows, no racing.

Thanks for any help I can get here.

  6. Thanks Dale that helps alot. been checking a bunch of forums and it seems the Th 350 should not be a problem. It was rebuilt a couple thousand miles ago. I don't drive daily and just wat a little more power and alittle better sound for the local shows. Thanks again or good info.

  7. Hey guys, I have put Edelbrook performer intake and carb and headers on my 72 350. am adding a set of ported and polished #186 2.02 heads and am looking at a crane energizer cam 270/270/ 454/454  and would like some opinions. Don't want to do bottom end and want to keep good vacuum. Is this going to work out .

    Thanks for any help

  8. Tony when I had my car painted the body guy said if I wanted to save them leave them on. But if he removed them he would not guarantee not to destroy them. But he said putting new ones on would not be a problem. He would use a rag and rubber mallet and also molding adhesive and tape them till they dried. My were in nice shape so I told him to just mask them off.

  9. If a 72 I am pretty sure it came with either an 8.2 10 bolt or 8.75 12 bolt. count the bolts on the cover if there is 10 probably an 8.2 unless someone changed it. look also for numbers on passenger side front of axle housing an look up on net.

  10. I bought the trunk carpet from East Coast Chevelle and it is short about 2" on the top deck and about 1.5 "s to long at the latch area. They said that was the way it is supposed to be. They charge 10% restocking fee and you pay return shipping. I just trimmed by the wheel well and moved it forward

  11. Thank you for the pictures Bruce, My 72 does not have that junction block. One of the previous owners really hacked the wiring. Thanks to all of you I am getting there. I think I will add a junction and rewire according to the MAP #1 diagram. A little work but I think it will be a more efficient system than the external regulator.

    Thank you Much
