  1. Carl,

I've got a 200r4 in my '70, its a direct bolt in replacement for a TH350, you can reuse the 350 mount & crossmember, it just has to be moved back several inches, but the mounting holes were already drilled. I used my same 350 driveshaft, but I had to replace the yoke that slides into the transmission due to it having the round balancer on it.

My '70 has the shifter on the column, it connected right back up to the 200R4 & after some adjustments, all gears were selectable.

The TV cable is the most important part of the 200R4 swap, make sure its adjusted correctly. I got the brackets for it from a late 80's Monte. The stud that attaches the cable to the carb is available from Edelbrock.

For the lockup torque converter, aftermaket kits are also available, I used a vacuum switch from Chevy truck & a brake switch to release my lockup.

you might want to check out www.turbobuicks.com & http://www.ptsnctb.com there's alot of information about this transmission & some performance upgrades there.

let me know if you need anything else.

  2. its the switch for the TCS (transmission controlled spark) it controls the soleniod between the carburator & the distributor. basically it turns the vacuum on or off depending on what gear the transmission is in. it allows vacuum to the distributor in high gear & reverse.

  3. I to would love to see a LS-6 Monte, or even a 454 4 speed, but I have my doubts, i'd think if 1 or 12 had been built, they would have turned up in 35 years. Its always easy to say or hear about someone having one of these cars, for example the LT-1 Monte, but when it comes time to prove it, usually they don't or can't.

Andreas, since you have a scanned copy of the build sheet, what options are listed on it?

Also, without seeing the actual build sheet, i'd still have a hard time believing one was built, a build sheet would be easy enough to piece together to pass it off over the internet.

  4. GENE THE LINE AT THE TOP OF THE TRANS IS YOUR PRESSURE LINE AND SOULD GO TO THE TOP HOLE IN THE RADIATER, AND THE BOTOM HOLE IN THE RADIATER SOULD GO TO BOTOM HOLE IN THE TRANS. IT DOSE MAKE A DIFFERENCE.

    CERTURION,

first thing, on the left side of the keyboard your using hit the "Caps Lock" button, it is very rude to keep typing in CAPS all the time.

second, explain why you quote above is correct?

    George,

all the coolant on the right side of the radiator has already passed through the radiator tubes, so it should the the same temperature.

So I can't see where it would make a difference which way they go, but my new prebent lines, due to their bends, were impossible to hook up wrong.

Now I am definately NOT an expert on this, but This is the first time I've seen a wheel like this one! (I think  ) My 70 has wheel #1
Thats the same wheel I have on my car now. I thought those were 70 SS steering wheel options also. I know GM offered them on thier SS models for sure though. As far as Montes I'm not for sure on that but I figured they probably did as an option.

    Jon.

this was option NK1, Cushioned Rim Steering Wheel, it was only available in black, cost was only $34.80.

This was in '70, i'm not sure if it was available on the 71 or 72 models, anyone with a 71 or 72 GM restoration guide can check.

  6. I'm not sure, but I thought wheel #2 was only available on the '71 SS454's & the '72 Custom's that had tilt wheel.

'70 SS454's had the standard wheel #1, unless the optional (NK1) 3 spoke sport wheel was ordered.

Here is a pic of that wheel in my '70,

    278787_6.jpg

Just another note, 70BlackCherry said something about painting the wheel to match, in '70 Chevrolet only offered this wheel was in black. Other Gm models used this wheel also & did offer different colors.

  7. Dan,

Those grilles look like the correct ones used up to & including the 70 models. The studs are welded to the backside.

These are the correct ones for 71 & up models, they also have the studs welded to the back.

  8. 7040202 is correct for a 350 (300hp) with a

    automatic transmission

    7040200 is correct for either a 402 (330hp)

    or a 454 (360hp) with a automatic

    transmission

both carburetors are the same, the only differences are,

    (1) .076 primary jets for the 350 vs. .078 primary jets for the 402 & 454.

    (2) air valve spring adjustment for the 350 is 7/16, while it is 13/16 for the 402 & 454.

  9. thats correct. 70 used the old style that was used in the mid to late 60's.

71, started using the new style that was used up until the late 70's.

there is a pic of the 70 style in my pics on CarDomain (use my link in my signature), go to page 3.

the 71 style has a more square body.

  10. 1. the cross over wiring harness runs across/back of the dash by itself, from the fuse block area up & just below the bottom of the windshield, behind the defroster ducts to the passenger side, the connector for the passenger side door should end up about where the front passenger dash speaker is mounted.

    2. the relay mounts behind the drivers side kick panel, there with be 2 dimples where it mounts at.

    3. this depends on what year you have. in '70, there was a seperate wiring harness for the power options, it got its power from the horn relay, the wire from the horn relay ran to a 30A circuit breaker mounted on the firewall below the brake booster, the wire from the breaker passed through the firewall into the interior & had a connector on it to power 3 options.

71 & 72 were more simplier, the wire just pluged into the fuse block, or if there were more than 1 power option, the 3 pluged connector pluged in first.

    4. all years, it plugs into the IGN. terminal of the fuse block.

  11. small blocks had a 5000 redline.

    402's & 454/360hp had a 5500 redline.

    Chevelles that had a 396/375hp or 454/450hp had a 6500 redline.

It is possible that the 5000 redline tach got installed in your Monte by a mistake or they were out of the 5500 when your Monte was assemblied, or it could have been added before you got the car. Another possibility is the original tach went bad, they replaced it with the 5000.

I thought the same thing, I did this on my first Monte, 65K miles of grease, sprayed it complete top 1/2 of the engine with EZ Off oven cleaner, within a couple of minutes the foam from the oven cleaner was turning orange, by the time I got it rinsed off, it was bare metal. Just thought you might want to be aware of this before you try it.

  13. I'm not trying to be mean here, but I've noticed that on several other message boards, that the members just post a link to their pics in their signatures, that way it doesn't take up alot of needed space.

If I wanted to see someones car I wouldn't mind having to click on one additional link. If you do something to your car that you would like everyone else to see, just post a message, and say, look what I've done now! and include it in a link to the pics. Problem solved.

    just my opinion.
