  1. Thanks Bones....you helped me in another post of mine under the name Body Part ID as well....I had one last question for you from the other post, do you have a pic of the fender braces that attache to the fenders near the hood hinge to down near the body mounts? Thanks, David

  2. Hello and Happy Thanksgiving to all! I'm thinking of replacing my old fuel tank and wondered if there was any point of using the old ECS system? I'm thinking of just capping off the extra vent lines and return line and using a fuel cap with a vent....other than not being original would this be OK to do or would I be running into a gas tank/vent issue...?

As always thanks for the help!

  3. Rod,

Thanks for the detailed explanation, all very good information.

And yeah, I have noticed that the tank felt pressurized a couple of times, but it happened so infrequently that I never really thought much of it...should have done something about it lookin back.....

Hey, one last question would uncapping some of lines going from the tank to the seperator or the line from the seperator to the canister help vent the fuel system? Good/bad idea? Or maybe I would start leaking fuel...?

Thanks again for all help guys!

  4. Thanks for the tips and advice guys...

To answer some of your questions....

I'm using an 870 Holley Street Avenger Carb....filters look good and Holley claims this Carb has power valves that will not blow out....I'm thinking it's not a carb issue, because I have tried 3 different carbs now and the problem is still there...the lack of power does not happen often, but when it does, it really leaves me wondering what the heck is wrong....

The Gas Tank Cap is not vented, however it does not fit tight either. I'll probably replace it to see if that helps....

    Any other ideas?

    Thanks!

  5. Hello FGMC!

I hope everyone is enjoying there Sunday evening....

So, need a little help...have a 70 SS MC that I'm having some issues with.....the car normally runs pretty good, however there have been a handful of times that the cars feels like there is temporaray loss of power while driving....almost feels like you are running out of gas or have a loose wire, then all of sudden the power comes back....we've ruled out loose wires, carb, timing and now we're brainstorming......one friend suggested vapor lock, however I don't have a lot of experience with VL...any ideas on how to confirm if this is the problem?

And last, when the gas tank was cleaned and leak-checked during the rebuild of the car a couple of gas return lines were plugged....I was told we did not need these lines since the car was no longer stock and would no longer be required to meet CA smog emissoin requirements....I think one of the lines may have gone to the charcoal canister, but I'm not certain....so, long story short, could the lack of a good gas tank vent be the source of vapor lock or loss of power?

Let me knwo what you guys think....and many thanks as always!!!

  6. Hello Everyone,

Capri thanks for the e-mail, while I'm sorry you went through the same headaches I'm going through, it's good to know I'm not going crazy, I was starting to wonder... ;0)

To summarize for the rest of the members, Capri went back to the original Springs and added a Shim/Spacer....which again makes me think Moog has a problem with the Front Springs for the 70 & 71 SS 454 MC....

Other than going back to the original Springs (which I no longer have) or getting the QA1 Coil Over Springs/Shocks which are considerably more $, I'm not sure what to do....frustrating...

  7. Bones,

I already tried 3/4" spacers/shims and still had a problem...so I took the Springs out and now I'm debating on putting the 71 SS 454 Moog Springs P/N 5536 in....or ditch Moog and try another Spring manufacturer....thought I would ask you guys first since I'm sure other members have run into similar problems...

  8. I brought the question up because I bought a pair of 70 SS 454 Springs, Moog P/N 6330 and wasn't very happy with the ride height...eventually I was told the 71 SS 454 had a different Spring which makes me think there is a P/N problem with 70 454 Moog Spring...I'm still not sure what to think about the Springs...the 70 454 Moog spring just doesn't seem to be doing the job...25 1/2" in the Front...to low for me...

Do you think I should move this post to the Suspension section?

    Thanks,

    David

  9. Hello everyone,

Moog is telling me they sell a different Front Coil Spring for the 70 & 71 SS 454 Monte Carlo. Does this seem odd to anyone? Aren't the frames, suspension and body shells the same? Wouldn't you think the Springs should be the same? Just curious what you guys think?

    70 SS 454 - Moog P/N 6330

    71 SS 454 - Moog P/N 5536

  10. Mike,

Thanks for replying and the link. I checked it out, and for my car/application 70' 454, it does not recommend electric fans. It says that the cooling requirements are too much for electric fans....

    Bill,

I called Flex a lite, and they say the same thing, they do not have a fan they recommend to cool a big block, however, if you did it and it works I think I am going to give it a try as well....we'll see what happens....

    Thanks,

    David

  11. Bill,

First of all thanks a bunch for taking the time to respond, I really do appreciate it. It sounds like the 2 fan system is the way to go. Did you wire it up where it turns on at a certain temperature? Or with a off/on switch where you manually turn it off and on at your convenience?

    Thanks again,

    David

  12. Hello Bill,

Just curious if you bought the flex a lite 2 fan system and how it worked? I have a big block running hot as well. Was thinking of trying the 2 fan system as well. If you did buy it, what P/N did you buy? Also, would you happen to know if the original big block fan shroud covers the whole finned area of the radiator? My shroud seems to leave about 5 inches open....

    Thanks,

  13. I have never liked Hooker headers because on occasions they will scrape the ground around the collectors. This time around I wanted to use block hugger headers, but I am not having any luck finding a manufacturer who makes them for big block 70-72 Mc's, you guys have any ideas? Or is the patriot header the next best thing to block huggers in terms of ground clearance?

    Thanks for your help guys.

    David

  14. Andreas,

Thanks a bunch, exactly what I was looking for, according to Randys Pinion and Gear using 3.90 gears I could go 100 MPH @ 3,300 RPM and 145 MPH @ 4,800 RPM with my setup as long as I have the horsepower to pull it.... I guess will see....;0)

    Thanks again,

    David

  15. Does anyone know a website where I can plug in tire size, engine RPM info and tranmission info and get a recommended rear differential gear ratio for my application ? Here's why...have ran an LS5 454 with Turbo 400 and 256 rear gears, changed the rear gears to 373. Was good off the line, but now I was reving/working the engine too much on the freeway. I will now be running a LS5 454 with a 200 R4 W O/D tranny, but not sure which rear diff. gears to choose. If I had website to plug in the numbers I could skip the guessing part of choosing rear gears? Any ideas gentlemen?

    Thanks,

    David
