  1. LOL Thanks guys!!!

BTW not Monte related but Lori (my wife) earned a spot in the Ultimate Street Car invitational this past weekend and I'm headed to SEMA with her to compete in her Camaro. Fewer than 100 drivers make it to that event and it is by invite only; you have to either win your way in, point in through the season, or get in with a sponsor selection. To get in by winning, you either have to win your division at a qualifier or come in right behind someone who had already won or they get the spirit of the event. She won her way in by getting the Spirit of the Event award at VIR.

Welcome Robert on becoming a new FGMCC member !!! A great story and another Monte being saved and resurrected. It’s nice to see you and your family partaking in the car culture and numerous automotive events. We are looking forward to seeing your progress and joining us at Club events.

I do want to make the Eastern Meet once it's completed. I hope nobody gives me too much grief for a modern engine and the addition of SS badging on a car that was never offered as an SS.

I hope the Monte / Model A does not become a requirement Rob Peters and Robert both having that set up. Good luck on the redo on the Monte

LOL, don't think that will be a concern. I just hope the Model A isn't hiding as many surprises when I take it down. I know there is some rust in the lower cowl and the roof wood is likely going to have to be replaced (normal) as it leaks at the rear. The engine will need line boring and modern bearings put in but hopefully that's about it.

That looks rough but fixable like you said. Good pictures and good project. I have a question. What is he using for sandblasting material if the car is basically still together, other than the removable panels?  And how is he getting all the left over material out of the car? I’m asking because I am doing a 70 and something of this nature needs to be done. Thanks

No we are taking it completely off the frame and putting it on a rotisserie. Not sure which media he is using but can try to find out when I go up there in a few weeks to help get the running gear out. I'm a wrench turner and not a body man unfortunately. I think I've decided to go with a modern engine since I plan on doing some racing and want reliability instead of the big block. Talking to our engine sponsor this weekend.

  5. And as promised here come some pics. Disassembly is underway and sandblasting. As always the removal of paint revealed a lot more problems that I had hoped. Apparently at some point before I bought it in 1984 it had gotten hit in the rear and there was a lot more rust than I realized but it's still fixable and will be done right. Luckily I have it at one of the best bodymen and metal workers around in Clint Morris and Morris Body Shop and Restoration in GA.

They are not bringing that back again this year and think it's gone for ever. I know a guy with a firebird that loved running it there. They claim they need the room for trailers and such.

What's not coming back?  Syracuse Nationals or Ultimate Street Car?

  7. Give me a year... 🙂 I plan on doing some Optima Search for the Ultimate Street Car events with my wife in her Camaro once the Monte is finished. Autocross is one of the five events.

  8. Great story. I bought mine in 84 as my first car in high school and built it up to about 350 hp. Loved catching the other kids in their newer 5.0 mustangs by surprise. I too am switching to factory gauges and have a full set of reproduction ones ready to go in. Since I am changing out the engine and transmission and rear end and darn near everything else I am going to put in that new speedo with 0 miles on the clock and let it start all over.

Even though it looks more like a "beater" right now, the number of looks and thumbs ups I get always puts a smile on my face. Can't wait until it's back from the restorer and we are cruising again.

  9. Absolutely. My Monte is already at the restoration shop so I won't have it for a year or so BUT I am usually at the Rides and Coffee at Detail Garage on Fowler with the wife's Camaro and am planning on doing the Jax Wax ones in Clearwater once we get it back from Lingenfelter. I also take my Model A to the Strawberry Classic Car Cruise in Plant City most months. I missed this past Saturday's due to another commitment and will miss March due to Lori racing at Charlotte that weekend. But we can definitely hook up sooner or later. Follow us on Instagram @racingbadwolf and we usually post where we are going to be a day or two ahead. We should make about all three and maybe even the River Car Show in April since we don't have any plans right now. Would love to meet you and see your SS.

I did the same as far as 3point in mine plus I beefed up the foam and added bolsters to the original type buckets. I plan on doing some track events and wanted the extra support. Plus the extra half inch or so of foam in the seat is VERY comfortable driving... I also went with leather instead of vinyl or the cloth.

Sorry about the poor picture quality but here is how they look.

I made some changes but only if they were original gm options. Also a few non gm options. ie retractable seatbelts and such.

  12. All I can say is ... WOW! Great job and it makes me want to document my build like this.

Purists will probably hate mine as I am modifying while maintaining a stock appearance aaaaand (this is where people often get mad); I am building the never built 1972 SS. I'll never try to pass it off as an original SS obviously but as a tribute to what could have been vs the Custom. Besides it is rolling on a pro touring suspension and will be a huge big block dressed as a 454. I've owned the car since 1984 and I'm building it into what I want.

IF I could get my hands on an original SS, I would do exactly what you did Dennis, get it back to as original as possible; you did a great job! 👍

  13. QA1 makes some awesome complete suspension packages. I installed their "Stage 2" kit on mine with three position coil overs and it handles very nice. I haven't dropped it to the lowest position yet but I know in the middle it's low and handles great.

They use tubular control arms, Heavy sway bars, and all the mounting hardware to convert to coil overs. Hardest part was taking off 50 year old components LOL.

  14. Definitely the slight lowering, I ran 225's for years before. I'll check out tiresize.com; wasn't aware of that site. A friend of mine is running 315/30R18s on his Camaro that is heavily modified. I may run that size through the calculator. I'll be running some massive HP so I need as much stick as I can get. Rear I'm not too worried about, our Monte's almost have a mini tub back there from the factory LOL.

  15. I have a similar question. Here's where I am; QA1 stage 2 pro touring suspension and building it for the Optima Ultimate Street Car challenge plus cruising, shows, etc. QA1 suspension is in the middle of it's range on the three position coil overs. The 225/70R15 BFGs on there now rub very slightly if more than one person is in the car on a very tight turn like when backing up or turning into a parking space. Has anyone had any luck with an 18 inch wheel with enough offset to maybe tuck it back a little more and if so how wide were they able to go? I'm trying to fit as much rubber under him as I can for track performance. For cruising / shows I'll probably keep the stock rally wheels and 225/70R15. I'd like to get to 275 or wider with a low profile sidewall for the track (not to mention extremely high speed rating. I'm a little embarrassed for asking this as I was a BFG performance specialist back in the late 80s / early 90s but technology has changed a lot and we never had the wheel sizes or tire sizes we do now; a 245/60R15 was about as big as you could go back then.
