  1. So what's your problem? Too many cars? I got some time off so let me know.

I was going to do the radiator cap, thermostat routine but I was wondering why something like that would happen all of a sudden? Guess I'm trying to figure out the mechanics of it.

  2. Took a short cruise Friday. 70 SS, 2 year old rebuild on the engine, 3 year old replacement radiator. Temp always is great. I pulled in the garage and after shutting it down it heard a small 'pop' sound about 15 seconds after I got out of the car and then coolant started coming out of the overflow tube. Maybe 2 -3 quarts worth. I haven't restarted it since.

    Any ideas?

  3. I have a 70 SS. Over the past few years, the PS pump seems to be slowly leaking fluid. I find some fluid on the inner fender. It's also noisy at idle (sort of a whine) but not terrible. Steering behaves normally and the sound doesn't change when turning the steering wheel.

The leak and the whine makes me think of a bearing. Replace, rebuild? Any suggestions for where to get a replacement or rebuild kit? Are they tough to rebuild (never done one before).

    Thanks,

    Mike

  4. After I take my 70 out for a ride, after I stop, the brake lights stay on. Spring, switch, or brake system problem? With the car off, if I pull back on the pedal, the lights go off.

Fluid is full. No work has been done on the brake system in the last year (1000 miles).

    Any ideas?

    Thanks,

    Mike

  5. I bought my 70 SS from the original owner, my Uncle John. It's a Flint car so as many have said, build sheets aren't always found. I have the POP, IBM card that refers to shipping from Mich. to Ohio, and tons of other docs.. I've had the car since 2006. I wanted it to be a purely 'original' car but 3 things clash with that goal.

    1. The engine failed. During the rebuild, really tough decisions had to be made. Cam, lifters, oil pump, alternator, pistons, etc. could either be 'stock' or 'updated'. In the end, I had to decide what I wanted out of this car. Either a resale value or dependability for a summer fun driver. I chose the second. So... visually you can see a Holley, MSD HEI, and open element breather, but the internal parts were also updated. The biggest difference is that I now venture more than 25 miles from home and I'm even driving it to Carlisle this year for the Eastern Meet (250 round trip).

    2. It came stock with an AM radio. The only station that comes in clear was an all news station. I had to have some tunes so I put a Kenwood head unit and mounted it under the dash. The ashtray won't open but I figured if I took it out, 4 small holes on the bottom of the dash wouldn't be visible. As for speakers, I flush mounted 6X9s on the package tray. Yes, I had to cut metal for the driver side but as for the package tray, I figure that is replaceable.

    3. My uncle bought the car knowing what was coming along in the pipeline politically speaking. He used to say it wasn't 'Muskie-ized' with all that smog crap and would be one of the last years you could say that. He worked for a steel supplier for GM and picked options for 2 reasons. More HP and less $. No A/C (my wife hates that) and NO console!!!

The area between the buckets is huge. I've often toyed with the idea of replacing the column shift with a console. Looks alone would make me happy. So if I put a console in, it certainly wouldn't be to make the car more valuable, it would be to make me happy. I can't see selling the car unless financial times get a lot tougher. It might even have a positive effect on the value but that's not important. I've kept every part that's come off the car (working or not). I've decided I'll do everything I can to keep it as true to original but I've waited 36 years to get this car from out of my uncle's garage. I want to enjoy it and that means driving it.

Sorry for the long post. I think I'm just mentally trying to work up to getting a console!

  6. My 70 has always had problems with tank pressure. If I take it out on a hot day, I have to make sure that I 'vent' it by taking off the cap each time I shut it down. I can't fill the tank because that will actually cause gas to flow out of the filler. A small hole sounds like a great fix.

  7. Davey and Wallaby hit the issue exactly. It is unique, buckets and a column shifter. I do hear "where's the console". And if I a choice, I think the console looks much better. I do remember a time in my youth that a console was not very convenient when we go to the drive-in smile It's still down on the bottom of the list of the things I might like to do. I got a long list of things that have to be done.

oh yeah, wallaby, that picture is scary.

  8. Has anyone every put a console into a non-console car? I'm not seriously considering it at this time, but I was just curious. I have a 70 SS auto-trans with buckets. I'm trying to keep the car 'original' but w/o a console, the interior looks incomplete. Has anyone made this switch? Pro's/Con's?

  9. About 8 hours for me. All I need is an engine and I'm good to go! I'd drive right past Tony if I turnpike it. Rt 80 is always like driving through a war zone of construction.
