1. Another place to locate the tach is on the A-pillar. I did that on both my '71 Monte and '67 Firebird. Looks much better than having a big [you said a naughty!] ugly hose clamp around the column. It also doesn't block any of the factory gauges. In my Monte I installed a set of aftermarker gauges in the place of the idiot lights. I picked up a set of small gauges and modified an extra dash I had to accept them. To most people (non-Monte folks) the look is stock. I suppose with the right tach you could do the same in place of the clock. If anyone wants photos let me know. 2. Quote: Originally posted by 72Munnte: Chris, I went to the scrap yard here and found two sets of the seals. I can't say they are in excellent shape, but they seem okay. If you still need some, I can go get them for you. Adam, I could still use a pair if you happen to find some. I've been busy replacing the RH quarter and trunk filler panel and haven't spent any time searching. Chris
3. From "Chevrolet by the Numbers 1970-75" the block casting number would be 3963512. The same block number was also used in 69, 70 and 71. [This message has been edited by Chris (edited 04-06-2001).]
4. Lucky, How much of the quarter do you need? I'll be removing the entire RH side on mine in the next couple of weeks. Since I'm drilling all the spotwelds it should come off intact. I'm replacing it because of damage to the top portion, the window area and the sailpanel. The lower portion behind the wheel is fine. I had previously replaced it with a section from a rust free car.I'll send what you need for shipping costs. Chris
5. Carl, If they are not cracked I'd be interested. Email me off line and we'll work something out. Chris rochec@msn.com
6. Year One also sells a repair quarter for the Monte. Having done a repair using a panel similar to this on my 67 Firebird (try finding NOS quarters for that!)I'd shy away from using those type panels to repair a car, maybe only as a last resort. If you have never done work sectioning quarters together I can tell you it's a ton of work. We figured we had over 100hrs getting them perfect on my Firebird. Because of that I'm using an NOS quarter to replace the RH quarter on my 71 Monte and also replacing the trunk lid filler panel due to a repair done prior to my owning the car. After 20 years of owning it I figured it was time. Chris
7. Stuart, Thanks, that's the piece I've been searching for. If someone finds a place selling them let me know. Chris
8. Adam, Those are the horizontal seals. It's apparent that very few have ever noticed these pieces or ever tried to remove/replace them. Try this. Roll down the rear window and feel the vertical area in the sail panel for the seals (inner and outer) that I am talking about. I've looked through most every catalog for 1st Gen Monte's and have yet to see them repro'd or NOS.. Looks like I'll repro'ing my own. If I had a digital camera I'd photograph them so all could see what I'm refering to. Chris 71 4spd
9. 71SS. No those are not the seals I am talking about. Those seal the quarter glass to the door glass. The ones I am talking about are the ones Rob mentioned. They seal the rear portion of the window to the sailpanel on the quarter. They can only be removed by taking off the earmuff panel (I mistakenly refered to it as the sailpanel) and removing the 2 screws that hold it in place. There is also an inner seal that is held on by clips. I've never seen this one repro'd either. Take a close look at your car and you'll see what I mean. I figured since I have the entire interior out and am installing a complete new one it would be a good time to replace the seals if available. Chris
10. For those of you with a Fisher Body Manual. The part I am looking foris called the "Quarter Window Rear Vertical Outer Sealing Strip" shown in figure 7.4 on page 7-2.
11. No, not the U-jamb rubbers. When looking at the quarter window from the outside there is a verticle piece of rubber that seals the window to the quarter panel. They are about 10-12 inches long. Most of the Monte's I have seen that have been repainted (mine included) have this piece painted too as it looks like a portion of the body. In order to remove it the inner sail panel needs to be removed as there are screws holding it on that can only be accessed from the inside of the car. I'll see if I can find the description and part number in the assembly manual.
12. Anyone found a source for the vertical seal for the rear of the quarter window? It's the outer one that is mounted to the quarter panel. Mine are pretty well cracked and deteriorated and the ones I've found are mostly in the same condition. Chris 71 350 4spd
