  1. always thought that 1970 had disc emblem as you could get drum brakes on a 70 monte , 71-72 disc brakes were standard , that being said gm had a way of using up parts in the plant , so each plant may have had different stock volumns and carried the disc pad until inventory ran out , that was normal when i worked in the auto industry

  2. discovered the notch out in the 72 upper tie bar years ago ,needed to clear the 72 grille , could late 71 cars have this new 72 upper tie bar for sure it is called a running change , worked 25 years building parts for production cars , could tell a million stories , if you new what i know about airbags you would drive with a helmet

  4. After over 40 years of restoring and collecting cars you think i would know better by now , just keep saving rusty cars , major metal work everywhere in our shop and i am still looking at saving this 71 SS454 , all numbers matching sat for many years , needs 75% of the sheet metal replaced , we have done several worse projects but this is major , color combo is odd/rare and build sheet documented , black on black with a jade green interior , was from Greenbay WI and had a Greenbay packers key chain , guessing a fan , first we will take her apart document and decide , so far it has been a great reference point and a sign that i am still a nut that loves a challenge

and yes we had to duct tape and chicken wire the car together to get it home , a good friend of mine had this car stored for 20 plus years and kept asking me are you sure you want it , OF COURSE YES

still crazy after all these years

if anyone knows any history on this car or previous ownership please let me know

  5. we are a distributor for AMD ,GOODMARK , SHERMANS ,DYNACORN , AND OPGI , we have sold several hundred over the years and all fit well with a skilled installer, steel inner fenders become a big part of the entire front end build as they do not flex like original plastic/fiber inners , so when i am asked about fit , my first question is where is the rest of the front end how well are your fenders core support and such things as body bushings aligned every car is different , we sell mostly Dynacorn as we have had good luck with them , but all companies listed above share a lot of the tooling , some parts are unique to supplier many are stamped on the same tool and simply branded

  6. Car Came from us at Koniks Klassiks , we did the body shell and supplied lots of parts , Custom Creations did a lot on the car , and Adrienne did a huge amount of work on the car herself , she was very motivated and stuck to her dream to complete the car she worked two jobs and went to school while managing this cars build , she put her heart and sole into the car and never lost her vision to complete the car , she is a very special person and her dedication to finish the car was true vision , most people burn out on their projects , it took several years to complete the car and a ton of work

  7. the metal inner fenders add great strength to the front end  , i prefer over plastic , the metal are more part of the alignment of the car and should be installed with the entire front of the car loose , as part of the front end sheet metal alignment , they simply stiffen the entire car up front , we have used both , the plastic ones from the parts place are just simply plastic , they are not that original and add no real value to originality , we have installed many pairs of steel and if you go about it right they are not a big deal to install , just remember there is more variation in your fenders hood core support and body than the fender wells , so they will fit each 1/4 inch Monte different and it does take some amount of skill to install , where as the plastic can be twisted and stressed to fit  , as the car is driven and moves most plastic will crack or split somewhere over time

  8. Ditto , what Jared said , 3M caulk strips , seen this from the factory , in late 72 they eliminated the holes added a couple more tabs around the column and 3m style caulk strips , remember you may want to remove this again someday so do not use a glue or strong adhesive you may not get it back off

side note i have seen early 70 models with a dash insert that has about 1/8 missing from the top and no screw holes at the top

  9. C08    is code for vinyl top , it is even possible the car was not built correctly at the factory , did not look close but make sure vin matches build sheet , i have found up to 3 build sheets for different cars or different montes , found a build sheet for a 1970 396 el camino in a monte back seat , car was shipped to Argentina

many options were installed at dealers , and vinyl tops were the in so many aftermarket companies offered top trim  , REMEMBER JC WHITNEY!!

  10. the 4 speed base is the same as an automatic , there is an enternal plastic insert and boot and metal retainer ring that is required for the 4 speed console

the reproduction consoles are good we sell and use them

gm original consoles we also have many in great shape as well  ,  the door and back plate seem to fit a bit better than repo and grain is better

i will check the thickness of the repo vs original

i recently measured an aftermarket rear bumper for a customer and found it to be .012 thicker than original gm so you never know the truth until you verify it with logic
