OK, so I can't for the life of me get the starter to not make noise. It grinds when I start it (no noise while running. I have 5 spacers in it and it still grinds while starting (sounds like when you accidentally start a car when its already on). 5 shims can't be right.
I thought if the bolts were staggered it could only be 168 tooth flywheel. Could it have staggered bolts and be 153? I'm at a dead end here, i have tried every shim configuration.

nothin yet, have to align schedules

too true Rod, too true!

going to use some Lucas oil and a friend of mine is going to come over and check/adjust my rockers/lifters for some beer/cigars... cheap mechanic!

Thats what it was, but now its making a tapping sound

OK, so it was the starter. I installed two shims and now and it doesn't shriek while its running. It still kinda shrieks while starting. Could it need more then 2 shims?
BUT now it makes an irregular tapping sound. (it may have been a previous noise, but I really don't think so. No rhyme or rhythm to when it taps if that helps.
Again, I can't thank you guys enough for your help.

ah crap, what would cause that?

OK so thanks to all your help the car now runs! BUt it makes a G_d-awful shrieking noise now. (keep in mind I just replaced starter & alternator)
I havent wired it through the firewall yet (just through the door) or spliced in the kill switch, but that is just busy work for later
I don't think it could be a misaligned starter after the car is running, could it? I loosened and tightened the alternator belt, to no avail. Im scared to loosen/tighten too much.
Any ideas?

not a bad idea, i have a battery disconnect but not as easily accessible.

ok i found the IGN terminal. pretty simple. Hopefully here is my last problem: I took out the 2 screw on the fuse box in the car and was able to pull the box forward. BUt if i run the wire through i can almost garuantee (sp?) it will get pinched. Am I missing a different spot or a trick?

ahhh so the IGN is the same as BAT
THANKS!

wait you listed 3 but there are only 2 wires. you said 1 to ignition terminal one to batter/+ and one is a tach signal.
-
There are two wires coming out of the hei. Where does the other one go?
-

my local auto parts store would have to special order it :-/ thanks a ton for the advice i will keep you guys updated. Arrgg looks like someone used a bunch of black caulk/sealant on the small hole located to the left of my power brake booster. Ill have to pick it out.

thanks for the info guys... a ton to choose from though: http://www.summitracing.com/search/?keyword=hei%20pigtail&dds=1
Advice?
-
Can you explain why it wouldn't work on the starter if that wire goes to the ignition terminal anyways
-
In the car? How do i find it
-
So where do i connect it to? Can i just connect it to where the ignition connects to the starter?
-
Thx aaron. Does it beed to be a switch source (oonly when starting the car) or always? Also, why cant i use the wire coming out ofbit currently?
-
From the info given on this forun i think its HEI.
-
I just taped it up. Coming out pf distributor to nothing. Should it go somewhere else.
How do i check voltage at the coil? I have the two prongs, but where do i stick em? Ive never had this problem before i swear ;-)

It came with 2 non-staggered spacers which didnt work. i bought a staggered set at autozone and reused old ones
