  1. I purchased a RH mirror for mine to match the drivers side as use to having 2 and for backing out of the garage it's going to make life easier. I am holding off the install as I now realize it's nicer shape then the drivers side. So will be buying the driver side next and installing both on the car before spring. I like the symmetry of the 2 anyway regardless if it's original. Hell HEI isn't original and it makes the car more drivable IMO so why not?

  2. When I bought mine I drove it home down the highway all the way home (407 for those who know). When I got it home before I bought a chrome breather for it. I took off the lid to check the air filter. Flipped it and drove it around town and punched it just to hear em...oh the joy...tee hee hee...made me feel like I was 17 agian...hey that trick has been around longer then these cars have been on the road. I remember seeing some hopped up 50's cars doing the SAME thing....that was the start of HOT RODDING and ya made do with what ya had to get some more oomph outta it!!!!!

I've now put the chrome breather on mine, but I'll keep the stock one...maybe for a car show I'll put it on and flip it just to see how many look at it and point and ask questions and then the older guys who will look and nod knowingly.

  3. Has this been confirmed? I need to see if there is a build sheet for mine. I know it has a 350 and it was swapped at some point and it has a Rochester Quad 4bbl that is suppose to be original and it does from the info I could find have a 10 bolt 8.5 no posi in the rear? hmm need to delve deeper into codes on this car when I get out under it next.

  4. If it was an Oshawa built car, all he would need to do is write G.M. H.O. in Oshawa and get the option printout package for that specific VIN number. Also, an Oshawa built car has the Z20 code stamped on the VIN plate on the driver's side under the hood up by the windshield....not sure if the Flint builds have it in the same place. I'm sure all of you know this stuff already but I thought I'd mention it anyway. Also, I know 100% that my 71 is a true SS because I have the benefit of my Uncle buying the car new so regarding the guage package, I know 100% that it was an option for 71 including on the SS as mine doesn't have it. Mine has power windows, power locks, buckets, air con, power trunk, remote driver's mirror and yes, I have the load leveling equipment still but it isn't on the car presently. The load leveling compressor and shocks were extremely problematic in their day. I remember my Uncle cursing that system often but if I remember correctly, most of the problems were with the hoses. Is there a fix for them that makes them more reliable? If not, I'll leave mine in the box at least for now.

I had a conversation with my Dad last weekend. He is 82 years old and worked on the line in Oshawa and then the stamping plant in Oshawa for a total of 32 years. He remembers that in 1971 he was working on the line in Oshawa in the chassis plant and the 71 Monte rolled down the line in front of him every day. I thought that was pretty neat.

That is a cool story, glad you can keep it in the family. And just for information mine was built in Flint Michigan plant and has the body code plate in the same spot on the cowl just below the windshield on the drivers side.

I wish it had been an Oshawa built car but meh!!! what ya gonna do? I understand why where it was bought new it came from that plant, as stated many (not all) of the Oshawa cars ended up sold a fair distance from here. I'd be curious where an Alaskan dealership got there's from as normally it is geographic regions that they shipped to and it would seem either of these 2 plants would be a long haul. Maybe on in Midwest or West coast...who knows??

  5. Well put a new wheel bearing in wife's Cavalier so it's good to go for winter, what a PITA to get it off. Thank god for my air tools and air chisel. Without them it would still be there hogging the Monte's domain!!!! mad

But got it worked out. Then took the Monte for a spin around town. Not a long trip but an enjoyable roundabout and stop for Timmies.

Then put the hardtop on my Miata and put it to bed for winter. Had to BBQ a few burgers on such a great day.....I'm tired but it was a productive day!!!

Now I can go to work tomorrow and rest... grin

This week I hope it's nice till the weekend. Have more work to do on the other winter beater (my POS truck)....then I can concentrate on the Monte for winter...let the FUN begin!!!!!

  6. I have to say, WOW.....that is some........half truths they tell in that ad. Ignorance is bliss. Show the body plate? where was it made? See if it has the build date? or the built sheet? No numbers (off the rear end, etc) are offered. Vin tells you it is a MC and plant built in. And a few other things on closer inspection. As stated rubber? instead of carpet? Also the centre console looks like it's black not green like the interior? Also funny it would not have the SS gauges (I know could be had without but with the centre console just seems strange?). But the biggest thing is CUSTOM paint!!!! Oh yeah....we put on a new hood, and front headlight area and same on the trunk and the tail light housings. Oh no it was PLANNED that way..YEAH RIGHT!!! We use to laugh at guys who'd do these things and drive them down the street for years like this. Custom painted that green maybe in the past and then opps we had issues with those other parts..well we will just replace these and make it look like we planned it that way!!!

I love the latest disclaimers about REAL buyers....if they can't stand the scrutiny shouldn't try selling it in E BAY!!!

Her fiancee too so has a way out to say oh it's what I was told!!!!

I think all our cars just went up in value.....LMAO...

  7. Congradulations too from another recent member from Ontario land.

Picked mine up a few short weeks back. Still taking stock of things I NEED to do and things I WANT to do this winter now that it's in the garage.

I have been a chromaholic with my bike and now it seems I will be renewing my addiction with the Monte. My sponsor (wife) gave up on me a while ago nutz to stop it.... kickingrofl

  8. Thanks for all the replies so far. To be honest, I think it is a TH350 don't know what the stall is nor for that matter what cam is in it for any numbers. No tach as of yet to check idle. But I would hazard to guess in Neutral/Park it is running 800 and when in gear and foot on brake it is like 600 or LESS which is causing it to stall.

All good points that tomorrow I plan on looking into. Due to my time off work and it's getting dark out fast I've put off doing anything till tomorrow when I have SUN and time to look at it and fiddle with it.

I litterally drove it home last Saturday and a bit around town on Sunday and it's been parked with the cover on it all week!!!! So tomorrow I will try some of the suggestions on here for diagnosis and see what I come up with. I wouldn't put it past being the timing AND vacuum both!! I will try to do my best to get to the bottom of this.

I do appreciate all the comments and suggestions so far and I also need to crawl under it and pull some numbers from the engine, transmission and rear axle so I can be better informed as to what it should have and what was done. It is not that anything is done wrong, I don't know what it is so in the dark so far??

But I will find it with all the great help and tons of experience from my new Monty family smile

  9. Thanks for the info and pics will make it easy to check mine for future reference. I have often been to some swap meet or ??? and seen an item for a car etc and now with some extra info will know if that diff (for example) will fit have parts I may want..I need to read up more as I can.....

I knew joining here would be a wealth of information.

    Thanks again.

  10. Ok so I just got my Monty and it has an annoying habit I need help to decipher from those who've been there and done that so I don't chase my tail.

When I stop at a light the car will idle REAL low and lope (cam) and stall. If I put it in neutral it will idle low but stay running. I am thinking it has to do with timing and the vacuum as it is being robbed by the brakes possibly. I need to go through it. Some background it is not the Original engine it is a 350 with a rebuilt 350 transmission and a Quad 4bbl and has headers with dual exhaust that I think do not cross over, straight to back (need to confirm this when it stops raining out..

I don't have a timing light (have not had need for one in years) so need to buy a good one soon. So my question is what have others who've experienced this done and fixed the problem. I know I am not the first to have this issue, but some directed advice from those who have would be very much appreciated. If it was someone elses car I could diagnose the problem in moments..but my own...to close to it??? not the perspective of an observer? So any help in this department would help me greatly.

Thanks and anytime I can return the advice I'll try to chime in.

    Regards
