  1. anyone know if the Corvette style (long branch) manifolds fit the monte carlo?

I have the OE log type on my car, but i kinda want to run the Corvette style for a little better flow - and I have a new set of BBC Corvette headpipes that would fit if the manifolds clear

    anyone?

  2. No, i'm talking about an air cleaner that looks correct - the Chevelle LS6 air cleaner was designed for a cowl induction - hence the hole in the hood -

i don't want an air cleaner that seals to the hood -  and the single snorkel LS5 is probably too restrictive.... and open element style doesn't look stock was my point.

at least with the 3x2 there is no confusing what it is.

Didn't I just say that as long as you run a stock GM air cleaner with a drop base you are gonna be OK? Hole in the hood??????? Just decide on a manifold and get the appropriate air cleaner and element and you are done. There is no need for a hole in the hood. The drop base, open element chrome top GM air filer with a stock height (3 inch +/-) paper air filter is going to clear with room to spare on the 4 BBL setup if you chose a 4 BBL. The stock 3x2 foam air filter element, chrome top and base are going to clear and there might be room for additional height above the height of the stock foam 3x2 element.

You are making this WAY more difficult than it has to be.

  3. Thanks ! LS65speed -

ive been going back/forth as to whether or not to run the 3x2 vs the l72 or L88 intake.

The problem i'm dealing with at the moment is regarding which air cleaner i'd run if i go 4bbl.   My stock LS5 air cleaner will work with a 3/8 spacer (which i've tried) but looks kinda silly with that obvious performance intake.... and i can't run a LS6 chevelle air cleaner as I don't have the hole in the hood...

i want the car to look factory even though it might not have come that way :D

  4. do both fit under neath the hood?
planning to shelf the original intake and run a GM alumiunim -

the LS6 clearly looks shorter  - but if the L72/L78 or the L88/ZL1 intake fits, i might go that route..

    any advice on fit/best performance?

    Thanks

  5. My SS454 air cleaner was refinished previously in a flat black....  is that correct? or should it be gloss? or semi?

and as long as I'm asking -   pulleys?  brackets?  gloss? semi?  for original accuracy

  6. Just thought of something....a thousand USD is like a kazzillion CDN...and another kazzillion for shipping and duty. :(

what part of Ontario are you in?  I'm in Allen Park, which is 15 minutes south of the bridge....

maybe Eric will give us a deal on 2 systems...  probably not  but you could ship it to my place if that would help

  7. Eric refrains from putting prices on the web - i think its so that people call and discuss exactly what they need -

they have a wealth of info as to what systems specifically came on cars i.e. factory changes and such -

and they offer things like "concours" package which has technically accurate hangers as opposed to simply functional, and then they can ceramic coat the flanges, they offer zinc coated clamps, etc etc...    so its not just "1 1970 Monte Carlo system pls"

as for price - my Chambered system for my Camaro was like 1600-1800 with the concours package, heat riser, ceramic coated flanges, and shipping... so definably not cheap... but when it comes to being perfect - there simply is no comparison......

And for sure - when its performance you are after,  a good aftermarket mandrel bent system is far superior in terms of performance (sound is subjective so i won't go there) but if you are doing a high dollar resto with manifolds and want every detail correct... these guys are it.

    Thanks

    Aaro

  8. They do not mix/match anything -  they build concours quality systems from the blue prints of the original systems - and they only sell complete kits

i have had several of their systems on Camaros and the systems literally fall into place perfectly - i've never ever encountered another system that does that.

i've used their chambered and transverse system on my 69 Z28 and absolutely love the fit/finish/sound.... something about an OE muscle car muffle just does it for me.

Here is my 69 Z with their chambered system on it -  the chevelle chambered system has resonators before the tail pipe tips so its a tad more subdued I think -

    https://youtu.be/hTRntCxb7es

and someone else 69 Chevelle with their chambered system..

    https://youtu.be/YNCZtaP9WP8

  9. the Chevelle systems fit our montes, I used the Gardener system on my '70 4 speed, fit perfect, Gardender knows their stuff, we used '69 tailpipes because I used the cowbell exhaust tips

    Sam,

can you post photo or two of the exhaust?  would love to see it...

I'm thinking of their 69 Chambered system for my SS454  - for fun :D

  10. So, i was thinking of ordering a concours system from Gardner exhaust -

they claim the systems for Chevelle/Elky/Monte are all the same....  with the longer wheelbase -how can this be?

Or is the added length of the wheelbase on the front end only? i.e. from mid engine back - monte/elky are the same as the Chevelle?

this would make sense with the longer fan shroud - but i wanna be sure before spending a chunk of money on a high dollar exhaust system

    thanks

  11. yes - i'm in for the Woodward cruise - also gonna bring the family to Norwalk this year for the meet.

i also thing that the closed chamber oval ports - with the matching 3x2 intake, and the LS6 cam will be a killer combo.

I extrude honed my SBC manifolds for the my 69Z - and didn't notice any difference for regular driving -

the car currently has 2.5" dual system which is what i'll keep on it for now -  should be fun.

worst case scenario - the 3.31s come out and 3.73s go in :D

  12. Hey,

i just bought a 600cfm Holley and RPM performer intake.

I am looking for 64cc aluminium heads.

Here the camshaft I want 224/232 duration .473/.486 lift.

What do you think about this ?

Unless you are going racing - the GM OE 250hp/300hp camshaft is about as good as it gets for street car in a heavy Monte....  you can get crazy and go big on a cam, but 9x out of 10, guys wind up over camming and engine just because the "tech support" guys made a suggestion.

For about 10 years, I swapped 8 different cams in the SBC that was in my 69 Camaro - trying to improve on the factory's hi-po cam... in every instance - the GM grind was superior.  (when using anything other than racing heads/intake/exhaust etc.)    I know I sound like an old curmudgeon - but really, i've been down this road a dozen times with people... and in every instance - without fail - a factory grind will ofter the best all around performance, reliability, ease of maintenance, and lastly - least amount of wear on the valve train.

GM engineers knew what they were doing.

NOW - aftermarket heads, intake, exhaust, converter, gearing?  then sure you can go bigger - but you might not like the low end sponginess of a big [censored] heavy Monte whose engine doesn't wake up until 2500 rpm.

  13. What is your goal?

I'm a pure stock, from the factory person, everyone is different.

    Bruce

I enjoy pure stock - but more than that - i like using the best performing GM "era correct" parts -

the ZL1/L88 cam is to crazy for a heavy car with AT -  so i thought the LS6 grind would be more than steerable - and using the tri=power is just cool!

  14. My Ls5 has had the compression dropped to 9.25:1 with the stock LS5 heads

    Curious to know your thoughts.....

    My plan...

Have a set of small chamber 67 bbc oval port heads.will have them fittted with large vlaves and open up the exhausr side some. Should yield 10.5:1

Gonna run a Ls6/L72 solid lifter cam (have an NOS one on the shelf)

Use the 68-69 oval port 3x2 holley seteup from the 400hp 427 Corvette motor.

Car has a th400 and was factory ordered with. 3.31s

Might consider going to 3.73 (or 4.10 and the gear vendors overdrive if its too doggy below 2500)

I really really really wanna run the Gardner Chevelle Chambered Exhaust (had it on my 69Z). Was loud but unmistakeable.

I know i could probably do bettter with headers and a mandrel bent free flow 2.5" system but i really love the notion of using some of the best GM street HIPO parts that were available le at the time.

  15. http://www.firstgenmc.com/forums/index.php?/topic/15108-163-l72ls6-i-think-intake-fit-on-our-cars/

See above link. 67 (400 and 435) manifolds are considerably taller than the 68 / 69 units. The 67 435 HP unit fit fine as you can see bey the pics. If the 67 fits the 68 / 69 will have even more room. 67 units are more expensive with the 400 HP unit being the most expensive of all units. If you do it don't necessarily run away from one with cracks, stripped threads, you can save a ton of money on the purchase. In point office more have cracks than do not have cracks. There is a guy named Jerry McNeish who is a welding magician and he can fix ANYTHING and make it look like new. www.z28camaro.com.  I have a 400 HP 67 on the shelf that that was nearly junk. He redid it and it is near perfect. I know where the cracks were and I can see evidence of any repair so no one else will see it either. You will spend money repairing it (Jerry does not work for free) but the work he returns is show quality and readily re-saleable at top dollar if you should want to sell later.

    wanna sell that 67 400 intake? :D

  16. Ok -  the previous owner installed an HEI ignition along with a Kill switch under the dash - -

car is a 70s, tilt column, ac, gauge package  -

i'm removing both to reinstall the original wiring...

here's my problem -   when i started removing wires including the oil switch - unplugging stuff from the fuse panel -  apparently, something in the wires now leave the switch to accessory position - as overnight  - it drained the battery....  baffled because it really doesn't make sense ...

anyway -  from the fuse panel - there was a wire to a kill switch - which seemed to go over to the top left of the plug on top of the column...

there is a large purple wire - which appears far too long to be where it is - so I'm guessing this makes it way over to the fuse panel...

basically - i think in the install of the HEI -  previous owner moved some wires around.

does anyone have a photo of the plug that sits on top of the column (the one actuated by the ignition switch rod)

and a photo of the fuse panel so i can see if/where the long purple wire goes?  it looks like the purple/white wire has been cut and then respliced - so i'm not 100% sure what is what

    thanks in advance

    Aaron

  17. Anyone know where I can buy the correct upper control arm shafts?

my car appears to have had the rubber replaced - but the drivers side has shaft with threaded ends - and big nuts that hold the washer on -  the passenger side has the 3/8x24 bolt that holds the washer in place...

would like to get a pair of correct shafts and simply do it correct.

    thanks

  18. my 70 - as i'm sure everyone elses -  has temp senders on the drivers and passengers side -

on the pass side - its 2 spade terminals, with the green wire coming from the firewall and a jumper wire over to the other pin.

on the drivers side - its just one screw terminal - -

this is exactly how it was on my small black 70 as well..

can anyone advise why 2?   I'm thinking of some mods that might require eliminating one (different heads)

    thanks

    Aaron
