  1. Aaron, I have same issue on my '71, let me know how you handled on your '70 as I have the vinyl trims from Jared.

    Rick

well - what i was thinking was actually mentioned above -

if your car had a vinyl top - you should  be able to see the remains of the rivets on the bottom side of the filler panel between the back glass and deck lid - (you'll have to lay in the trunk and look up) but they are there..    i plan to drill tiny holes from the bottom so that i can screw the trim clips back in....

once i have that done, i should be able to mask off a 3-4" wide "guess" area as to where the top trim originaly was...   if the back one is in place - then the rest of the trim should assemble together (on top of the tape so as not to scratch anything) and you should be able to tape it into place to test fitment....

once its taped into place and you (I in my case) am happy with the spacing - then it should just be a matter of tracing the trim onto the masking tape - and then drilling all the holes and screwing the clips into place right down the center of the trace.

The "Z" shaped corner has a stud that gets held into place with a speed nut from the inside -  - i've not removed my interior sail panels yet, but i'm hoping that once i do, it should just be a matter of exploring the backside of the quarter panel to see where the holes were - if not, then i might just have to measure again, using my trace.

I've never personally installed a top, but i'm guessing that the vinyl material needs to be stretched and glued into place all the way underneath the trim - with it partially being held into place with the clips.

I'f I'm correct, the clips were originally held into place with rivets, and as you slid the clip over the rivet, they locked tightly into place atop the vinyl....    since ill be using screws to hold them down, i don't want to screw and then unscrew and then screw etc.... fatiguing the metal and running the risk of having loose screws/clips....  so if you have to go this route as I do - then i'd be very careful about making the screw holes too big :D

    cheers

  2. previous owner restored car without top

welded, ground down etc. all the studs.

My car is an early (Oct 69 SS454)  so i want to put the Halo top back on.

without pulling the headliner, because its original and perfect -  i want to locate and install clips in the correct location

does anyone have photos or measurements on how i can accurately do this?

from inside the trunk, I can see the welds on the bottom side of the filler between back glass and deck lid -so i could drill those easily - -

i haven't pulled the interior rear sail panels yet, but i suspect i'll gain access to the back side of the quarter- sail panels enough to find those holes.... but i'm worried about above the door glass, and most importantly, how the halo corners attach etc.

    thanks

    Aaron

  3. anyone have a photo of where the white resistor wire that goes to the positive side of the coil comes out of the firewall....

is it in the main harness, or separated with an isolator through the firewall?

previous owner eliminated the points distributor and put a HEI system in with a killswitch -   needless to say - it appears the original wiring is gone - and a larger red wire installed inlace.

i'm putting the original distributor back in and would like to restore the wiring to OE if possible (without replacing the entire underhood harness - as the rest of it appears un molested.

i'd appreciate a photo or two

    many thanks

    Aaron

  4. THANKS ALL!

I will enjoy the heck out of driving it while putting it back original -

today - i spent about 3 hours rebuilding/restoring the original distributor which came in a box - i'm waiting on the correct coil clamp and then i'll swap em out...

    i also have a couple question -  the trim tag shows a 10B date code - which i know is Oct - 2nd week 1969 -

and my original distributor is dated 9G28 -  so, 28th day of July 1969=  so a few months before the car.. which makes sense.

If i were to look for dated rally wheels -  is there an acceptable variant in the date?   the Camaro/Corvette guys are NUTZ about this stuff and maintaining proper date stuff so its ingrained into my programming as well -   so i'm curious if the Chevelle/Monte guys have experience in what might be an acceptable wheel date for this car?

I believe YH coded 15x7 Rallys -   i actually have a set of sept 69 YH rally on my Z28 - but they are staying put! Lol

    Cheers

Finally got my dream Monte -   this car is a legit, documented, with Protecto-plate SS454 - the load leveler compressor is gone, but the frame clips and rear valve are still in place - motor is correct, etc. etc.

The only issues that are in need of immediate attention -  previous owner restored without the black vinyl top  - so thats going back on in short order -  and he put 15x8 on all 4 - which with the sagging front springs caused the rubber to rub on the inner fender -  so i'm going to replace the wheels and tires with he correct sizes.

Runs quite good - although i'm certain its due for a tuneup and the timing is clearly over advanced based on the stutter starting it does - - it has an HEI in in now - but i got the original distirbuor with the car - so i'm rebuilding that before i get into the ignition.

a few other things it needs to be "RIGHT" but all in all, i've been driving the crap out of it this week and having a ball!  Kids love it too :D

  6. I just searched a little but I don't see a G70-15 or equivalent 225-70-15 pinstripe whitewall by Kelsey Goodyear. :(

i'm fully planning to put RWL Goodyear Polyglass GT on this car... i love the old school RWL look -  i'd actually go Firestone Wide Oval - but i know from 1st hand experience that the Coker bias ply ride like crap and wander all over -  the Kelsey Goodyears I have on my cars now are great.

    thanks

  7. Yes, they are like a Wolf in Sheeps clothing as they say. They have the true complete Bias Ply look and appearance even down to the shoulder but the insides are modern Radial design.

    Quoted from Coker

"The true vintage-style tread pattern give this tire the original look, while the steel belted radial internals make it the perfect choice for a car that will see plenty of miles. Coker uses radial construction that improves handling and ride quality compared to bias ply originals."

    Darren

Darren, unfortunately the only tires that Coker does like that are the black wall, and the large white was (rim to road)   the WideOvals are not available in anything other than Bias ply construction :(    i just got off the horn with them -   the Coker bias plys ride like crap -  the Kelsey tire goodyears are far more friendly as far my money is concerned -  cheers

  8. Well although they are not The Original tire sold on our Monte's I am going with a G70-15 that was sold on our cars but not a whitewall but rather as mentioned the Wide Oval O raised white letters.  I ran a set of original Bias ply ones on my 70 chevelle LS5 and drove like a bag of ____.

so This time I am going with the Radial ones but have the Bias ply appearance in tread and will see what they are like. I also love the whitewalls as I ran them on the 70 Convertible Monte and looked good but I wanted a sport look or Muscle car look so going to try these.

    Darren.

so Darren,  those Firestone Wide Ovals are the coker bias ply right?  -  i'm not sure i followed -  you said something about the bias ply look on the modern tire..... confused

  9. well - the reason i asked -

i took delivery of a 70SS today -   car is damn nice - but previous owner put 15x8 on all four corners with 235x60 R15 -

which means, any more than 1/2 a turn of the wheel, and the tire was rubbing on the inner fender bolts -

i can't for the life of me see how he drove it -

anyhow -  in order for me to drive it -  i had to take the rear wheels of my 69 Camaro and put them on the front -   looked a little goofy with bias ply up front and big [censored] radials out back...

but i love the look of vintage RWL on a rally  -

i might have to break the rule !

On my white 70 (350 2v)  i put the 70 Z28/71-2 CHevelle SS wheels on with red lines and thought it looked killer -   i just might put those on this car -
