  1. blake.. no.. all GM automatic transmissions have a 1:1 third gear the 350, 400, 200-4r and the 700r4 (i think there are a few 400's that have an odd set of gears) 4th gear in a 700r4 is .73:1 not sure about the 200-4r off hand.

i thought about trying to make a liquid cooling system for my old machine when I used to run the SETI@home stuff because of the heat it would generate.. I wasn't so much concerned with keeping the unit cool, as I was in what to do with the heat that was removed.. it was making my room very room keeping a 400mhz cpu running 100% duty cycle 24/7 unfortunately, I don't have the equipment I need to machine the parts. I figured I could take a block of aluminum, drill several small holes through it on one size, and two large 'manifolds' at either end... tap and plug the diagonal corners, and use 1/8" pipe thread fittings on the other two...
  4. the speedo sender isn't under fluid when the engine is not running.. allthough some fluid will pool in the tail shaft housing, more likely it's leaking much more when running. is it leaking from where the speedo cable attaches? or is it leaking where the unit the speedo cable attaches is in the trans case? either way, as suggested, just remove it, and have a trans shop throw some new seals at it.
  5. i ran manifold on my engine for quite a while.. I liked them because they never leaked!!! but they were just hurting h.p way to much to keep.
  6. i drove mine in with cold chisels, just working my way around in a circle. .took me quite a while.. but I managed it.
  7. np bill.. if you get that tc even a hair off center... i did my torque converter one one bolt completely tight at a time, and it warped the heck outta the flex plate.. and hammered the tc back and forth until it took my front pump out. (this is what finally pushed me into the 700r4 swap)
  8. lol, I wouldn't call the cast iron manifolds pos's unless you are looking for power (I gained 0.7 seconds in the 1/4 mile doing nothing but dumping the manifolds for headers) but for reliability and ease of service.. keep the manifolds
  9. lol bruce i didn't think they were that bad. getting the new ones in was harder. one thing I forgot to add.. was using a torch to melt the rubber inserts out so you can do what I showed there. it stinks.. but it works
  10. for those interested, I made up a mini how to on an easy to way to get bushings out of the control arm if you don't have a press handy.. The Link.. The Link.. The Link is on fire..
  11. Mike: My dad custom ordered this one from Dell, so it's not technically store-bought, but I agree totally. when i first got it.. it ran about as fast as a fly on fly paper. first thing I did.. was get rid of the Norton Security Suite.. it should be criminal for a program to be able to use that many resources that it slows a p4 3ghz down to about what my k6-2 400mhz could do with windows 98!!! my windows 98 machine at home will happily run for about 3 weeks between reboots even with heavy usage. it takes some time and effort, but if you track down the problem causers one at a time and fix them... you can make windows remarkably stable that sprtcmd.exe which is part of Dell's crap.. was the source of a lot of problems for this machine.. I'm happy to see it gone i think I'm going to be replacing a fan on this machine soon.. it has a combination case and cpu fan (one fan for both purposes) so i can't afford that fan to fail entirely... I really like these dell cases. they are mostly 'tool-less' design and really quite solid for being like that. it has a large plastic duct that sits right over the top of the cpu so that the case fan draws air over the cpu heat sink and out of the case.... sorry other way around, it draws outside air in and blows it over the cpu. the reason I like this setup, is the 3" case fans are far more reliable then those dinky little 1" clip-on-to-the-cpu type fans.
  12. bill: are you doing the bolts up tight one at a time? you need to do them up evenly.. spin them in snug with your fingers.. spin the crank over a couple of times, then snug them down.. I had the same problem with my TH350 once when I didn't do this.. and I wiped out my front pump from it.
  13. bruce: I would think so. I've never had problems with a hard drive after loosing power. with any version of windows.
  14. allan: I'd rather not do that to this machine. and it's really not necessary. I really trimmed a LOT of fat off the ol girl.. and that Dell app was the one crashing all the time so I don't feel bad that it's gone
  15. QUOTE OF THE WEEK!!!! ROFL!
  16. I went through my task list. line by line.. looked up each of processes running.. and shut down a BUNCH of crap I didn't need. I even still had a dell application running for when this computer was under warranty 6 years ago. I deleted some cd auto insertion app that got installed with my sound card I don't need some kind of media player that got installed along with something else I didn't want shut down both adobe and java's auto updates also shut down java's pre-cache shut down yahoo IM's auto update turned off the ATI control panel since I never use it (didn't delete this one, just turned it off) also turned off the drivers for alternate input devices like a graphics tablet, since I don't have one. I can already 'feel' the difference in how my machine is running. the real test will be the reboot time.. see if it can beat it's base line of 2min 49seconds to shut down and restart
  17. SWEEET! most of the guys were snickering cuz they were judging my car by it's paintjob.. then were shocked that it could hold it's own. an even more shocked that i was doing 14's with such a mild smallblock (they key is in the gearing!)
  18. Andy.. there was a member here.. Daryl Smith. he was in the low 9's with his monte.... 300shot of nitrous to get it there tho Leo's monte had run low 11's on the motor... (it's not that hard if your pockets are deep enough!)
  19. ian.. i've known a few guys to drive home in the rain on slicks.. VERY VERY SLOWLY!! yeah it is a pain driving to the track changing to slicks.. BUT.. one I can't afford a truck and trailer.. but 2.. at least at my old local track in michigan it got me a lot of respect for trusting my car enough to do that a lot of the guys snickering at my car stopped snickering after I pulled off a 14.234 run and they found out I drove it to the track :>
  20. to the track is the one time it IS permissible to trailer your car!!! it's hard to drive a broken car home
  21. yeah that's true, I didn't think about it that way. I just threw some better then stock parts at my stock heads, since at the time, I believed it was a stock exhaust valve that failed.. it sucks to open your engine up and find this:
  22. davey.. yeah I don't mean to say HE put them in there.. but why a builder would only use single springs on a performance build is beyond me. even my $100 head improver kit that had all 16 SS valves, springs, retainers, keepers, et. al. had springs with a damper in them.
  23. i think you are overthinking it again mark. since the fatmat is glued directly to the steel, I don't think there is much chance of moisture getting in there to begin with.
  24. I would question why you would have single springs at all on any kind of a rebuild except a BONE STOCK family grocery getter engine, let alone a decent performance build like you have.. but that's from my small block world.. maybe big blocks are different..
  25. THAT is cool video
