  1. My 72 custom was built in california and stayed there until 84. My vin indicates 2brl carb but it has a 4. I'm assuming someone switched out the carbs. My engine is matching #s. Ending in "cmd" with my vin# stamped next to it. Read on a website it was "nb2 equipment..not sure what that it. I've also heard that california law required a 4 brl to be on for emission purposes so I've been told it coulve been switched out at the dealer. What makes these a "california special"? and what's a port hole in sale panel?I aplogize for lack of knowledge in this dept .is that small holes where the custom emblems go?. I have all the custom options with f41 suspension but my trailering arms don't seem to be boxed. It would seem not worth it to clone a custom but that seems like the only thing that's off. Both sway bars are present along with sport mirror ,belt molding ,custom emblems, 4 spoke steering wheel with tilt and cruise and lighting equipment.everything also matches up on cowl tag.Makes me want to pullgas tank and find build sheet any ideas?
  2. Ok thanks. I didnt know that only that few were built. How did you find that rough estimate?
  3. Ok thanks for the replies! Nice monte build! I thought 42k customs may be on the high side..but who knows!!!
  4. Hello all. I was recently looking around researching gm production numbers on the custom model and always come to conclusion that they were never kept track of.however I was directed to chevelle website which included monte info. In 72 they state 45, 201 b85 belt moldings were put on montes exclusivly. Since all customs came with belt molding, could that be how many customs were made? 45k out of 180k units? I also see that my cruise control was only put on 11k including chevelles! . Is cruise control that rare on these cars? Kinda neat to hear that.on our fgmcc website only 100 cars or so had cruise in 1970. Here's the link to the other website http://chevellestuff.net/1972/options_by_model.htm
  5. ^ that rear trim is one of my favorite parts of the car. I heard its a tough piece of trim to find. Does anyone even reproduce this part?
  6. Yes unfortunately its almost time to put it away for winter. Thank you all for the compliments. There are some beautiful cars on this forum!
  7. Yes that is what I heard about the cruise control. It still works good to. On these cars the cruise likes to over accelerate when you first engage it or go up a hill. Or they just like the pedal to the floor.
  8. I heard everyone loves pictures. Now that the cars is all cleaned up and running good I figured I'd do a quick walkaround!
  9. Ok.thanks. I never heard of that show.sounds like a good one! Little early to tell now but I may come as well. I have to see what my schedule holds for that weekend. Would be great to get together with another first gen monte owner!
  10. Yes. I'm very glad its running good! I wanted to go to j efferson but I will be out of town next weekend. I wanted to see if I could snag a front bumper for a 72. Eventhough my chrome is very nice I can tell the previous owner rolled into something right in the center. No damage but you can tell it was pulled out sounds like a good time at jefferson, hope the weather cooperates!
  11. I did check the pump. It squirts a decent amount a fuel as far as I know for a 42 year old carb. I'm thinking its probably a slight misadjusted secondary screw like mentioned above. The hesitation is intermitent. It can sometimes happen even if I am traveling about 10 mph as well and then step on it, so it doesn't always happen from a complete stop either. Other times it runs perfect. Needless to say I'm glad its running good again! It only needs a slight dwell adjustment but I wanted to log some miles first and it was real humid here yesterday so I want to adjust when its a little less humid
  12. Wow..that's great advice. Very fortunate to have found this site. Thanks a lot to all. That will give me something else to tinker with now thanks to all of you
  13. Good news! It ended up being a combination of bad original plugs and bad distributor points (they were almost melted) and I got a new cap and rotor right away. Not to mention Im embarrased to say I was 6 turns out on drivers side idle mix and 4 out on pass side) once these issues were corrected she fired right up and went into fast idle. The car runs amazing now. Took it on a 30 mile cruise. Ever since I owned it it always had a slight bog if I mash the gas like at a red light...but then it catches and runs like the wind. If I gradually punch it it won't do this. I heard this is common on a 4 brl quadrajet.I'm kind of new to this car so I was wondering if that's "normal"
  14. Ok thanks for the information. I will be tinkering a bit today. I will see what I can find. If ventris are plugged is a full disasembly required to dislodge debris required? I was also thinking I could have a bad accelerator pump. I know my carb is way out of adjustment as I was turning all the screws a bit thinking that was the issue initially. Once I have a good base to start with I should be able to get the csrb adjusted right..as of now I get no response when adjusting any of the screws
  15. Hello. Today I changed out plugs and inspected distributor and what I noticed was that the vacumn advance connected to distrubutor seems to not be working. Using a vacumn gauge it took 12 psi to finally move the plate in distributor. I still have no fast idle and using a meter I constantly run at 700 rpm. Step on gas and it still skips. Motor is getting fuel as I can idle 15 mins with no problems. When I disconnect vacum line going to distributor as well as the ports to the carb I get no change in idle at all and it seems to have no vacumn at all going through the line. I'm wondering if anyone of you are familiar with vacumn advance and if my car is displaying symptoms of it being bad. It doesnt seem I have any air pressure even close to 12 lbs in my line. Thx in advance for any input
  16. Yes. That it usually how it was running.good fast idle. Tap gas and idle comes down. But as of recent I can't even obtain a fast idle. Something is off. When I start car it idles slow like it has been warmed up already. Then when i give it gas it sometimes sputters and misses to the point i think it would die if i drove it.I am going to check timing and plugs/distributor this week. Engine seems to be getting good fuel.I will keep updates along the way. Thanks again for all the help
  17. Ok thank you guys for the replies! So that isn't a oil temp connector? Just curious because all my gauges function but I have no red lights so to speak. My manual says that when u turn the key the gen. Oil should flash red to show its working. So I guess I cant tell if I'm running hot. I was thinking the bulbs could just be burned out? I'm beginning to think my rough engine maybe caused from a stuck choke possibly. Today I noticed that the choke was stuck in the closed position when the engine was cold. Usually I have to tap the gas and then it closes.I didn't notice this earlier when you guys asked about it but just saw today.would a stuck choke cause this issue?
  18. From what I can tell the wires appear to be ok. My issue is about 4 of the 8 wires that go to the distributor seem loose. When I plug them into the distributor it seems like I should be able to hear snap on to the points. They seem to just rest on the top cover where the others seem real tight. The aluminum seems clean but it doesn't seem to fix to anything under the cover almost as if the gaps are to wide and not fixing where as the plug wire covers going in the block snap in real nice. I also see a worn green wire from a connector going near drivers side heads. Its a little plug connector and one of the wires is broke. Does anyone know what this controls? Also near voltage regulator I see a ground wire that is not connected. Here are some recent pics. Any help identifying this would be great. http://s754.photobucket.com/albums/xx188/microwave3
  19. I crawled under the car and follwed the line to the pump. I don't see any kinks. I pulled the line off the pump and fuel is coming out pretty steady but not real fast. From what I understand this fuel line is gravity run..so as long as the pump has fuel it should be getting enough correct? The pump seems to be good. I did check my distributor and some of the points seem to be on real tight and others you need no force to pull them off..almost if they are just resting on the cap..is this normal or could these wires be my culprit
  20. Well it looks like the filter wasn't the issue..I put a new one on just in case. Once again low idle give it gas and seems to skip. More of a white smoke (not heavy just haze) strong smelling exhaust. It idles ok but I just can't find that high idle I usually get right when its started. Could bad gas be the issue? I only have a little over 1/4 tank left. I thought about adding about 5 gallons or so to see. While in park I was now able to rev engine good..once the rpms back back down it stumbled a bit..but once I put it in gear and drive forward and hit the gas it stumbles and misses pretty bad to the point it almost feels like it would cut out if I kept going. Also seems like more condensation than normal coming out of pipes. But that could be just from all these small starts and running sessions
  21. I poured some fresh gas directly into carb and started and it finally seemed to give me my high idle back..but not for long. I'm assuming filter is plugged. Anyone know proper size fuel line wrench? I'm thinking 5\8?
  22. I agree. Do you still think its best to start at the filter again? Even though the line was plugged initially I blew it out now fuel is rushing out of it into the pump. I would think it should fire up after clearing that line even if the "sock" is clogged up but. I have a feeling when I rocked the car back and forth for the parking brake issue caused this..I heard the gas really sloshing around..or am I way off here? Or maybe rock it back and forth again to dislodge?
  23. Well guys. I decided to pull the rubber fuel line going to the fuel pump and to my suprise no fuel was pouring out and just a small drip coming from pump inlet..so I blew air through it and fuel rushed back out.I was very confident this was the issue..I hooked the line back up to fuel pump and once again idled real slowly..then when it hit the gas it stumbles and don't rev up properly..let off goes back to light idle. I was almost positive that no fuel in the line was the issue!!! I can tell the pump seems to be working because when I pinch the rubber line I can feel suction. I still think this is fuel related and am beginning to think filter like sam said. I have to pick up a line wrench first so I don't twist the metal line (might of learned the hard way before) I do notice that on the front of my carb where it says "filter" there has been a dark gas residue very small that seems to cover that housing. Could this be the issue?? Any input is great. Thank you allso much
  24. Thx scott. That is a beautiful color on that monte by the way!!! Anyways my fuel pump is new along with the steel line(I know they can still fail though) I didn't ever need to jack car up at all to do brake repair I just slid under. Mine is as 72 so does that have a special gas cap? I also never thought of checking a crimped rubber gas line.maybe I bumped it when pulling on the brake lines! I will definately Check these items. It did run great before the brake fix. I always had a issue with needing to warm it up along time before putting it in gear or it would stall out. But this is that spring part thermostat. I've learned to deal with that..but never encountered this Update..checked gas cap it was on tight but was full of crud on the center vent on both sides.Im sure its always been this way but I cleaned it up.I check things tomorrow Any other ideas are appreciated
