  1. I paid 1000 for mine a year ago.  I talked to a guy that rebuilds them.  I told him that I hadn't bought one yet and asked him if he could assemble one for me.  He recommended a case and gear cluster for my application and put it together for me.  I felt like that was a fair price for a "new" transmission built like I wanted it.

  2. Hey Sam.  I am doing a little bit of research on this as well.  Look at ls1tech.com.  Let me know if you run across any other info.  I ran into a friend yesterday that is giving up on a project and wants to sell his 6.0 at a good price.  I might get it to put in my 4 speed car.

  3. A build sheet could have been dropped in at the factory in several locations: in rear seat, above gas tank, etc.  You cannot obtain one after the fact.  If it is a Canadian built car, the cowl tag will have a "Z 20" on it, if it is an SS.

  4. Hello monte lovers.  I recently installed a muncie 4 speed in my 72 monte with 350.  I have an 8 tooth drive gear and a 19 tooth driven gear for the speedometer.  According to a calculation using the gear ratio and tire size, I need to have an 18 tooth driven gear with my 8 tooth drive gear.  I bought one, dropped it in and the speedometer was way off, showing 15 miles under the actual speed.  I removed it thinking that I should have counted the teeth before I put it in.  When I removed it, I found that the teeth were messed up.  Figuring that I didn't get the teeth meshed, I threw it out and put the 19 back in until I could get another 18.  I got my second 18 and it did the same thing.  I did take my time, using a number 1 square bit screwdriver while pushing it in to get things lined up.  Is there something I am missing?  Why is this happening.   I am going to attach some pics but they are not the best.  I have tried in many angles with different amounts of light and these are the best.

  5. Hey guys.  I have a 1972 monte with stock 350, 4 barrel engine with 117000 miles.  It has a Muncie 4 speed and 3.08 gears in the rear.  The motor has not been tampered with, as far as I know.  I bought it from the original owner last year and it had been parked since 1988.  It has been smoking on start up so I decided to change the valve seals.  I tore it down last night and got to thinking that this would be a great time to change the cam.  My plans for the car are to drive it, a lot.  I am not interested in racing but would like to have a nice sound and, although I am really not concerned with more power, a few more horsies are welcome.  Would you have any recommendations on what specs I should look for in a cam?  This is a budget minded upgrade at this time.

  6. Hey guys,

I recently put a 4 speed in my 72 monte with 350 and 2.73 gears in 12 bolt.  I really like everything about it except for taking off in first gear.  On level ground, the engine lugs a little bit.  When taking off on an incline, you really have to slip the clutch.  I plan on driving this car wherever I want, including hours of continuous running on interstate.  I am wondering what a comfortable RPM range is for that type of driving.  I know that a 4.11 or so would be very fun but I am more interested in a having a good driver.  Thanks in advance.

  7. I used a wire brush on a 4 inch grinder, then applied 2 coats of POR 15.  I removed the exhaust and coated all that I could.  I stopped at the rear axle.  I have plans to drop it one day and clean the rear section, coat it and , paint the rear end, etc.
