  1. sorry for the lack of updates. this turned into a frame off restoration and have had basically no progress in over a year due to the paint process. I did decide to ditch the Muncie and go with a tremec 5 speed.
  2. By the way, I would like to buy one of the smooth collars for the steering wheel if anyone has one they would part with.
  3. I did my own headliner. It was a little challenging but possible. I will probably do it myself again.
  4. If I remember correctly, mine hooks to the end of the clutch fork and the hooks to a hole in the frame.
  5. I paid 1000 for mine a year ago. I talked to a guy that rebuilds them. I told him that I hadn't bought one yet and asked him if he could assemble one for me. He recommended a case and gear cluster for my application and put it together for me. I felt like that was a fair price for a "new" transmission built like I wanted it.
  6. As some of you might remember, I put in the Muncie behind my 350 earlier in the year. I just picked up an LQ4 to put in this winter. Ill be posting info here as I learn.
  7. Hey Sam. I am doing a little bit of research on this as well. Look at ls1tech.com. Let me know if you run across any other info. I ran into a friend yesterday that is giving up on a project and wants to sell his 6.0 at a good price. I might get it to put in my 4 speed car.
  8. A build sheet could have been dropped in at the factory in several locations: in rear seat, above gas tank, etc. You cannot obtain one after the fact. If it is a Canadian built car, the cowl tag will have a "Z 20" on it, if it is an SS.
  9. I will have to remove my 19 tooth to compare it. They all seemed the same length. Ire there different length ones available? My speedo cable is bent with gentle curves.
  10. Maybe. But it seems to work fine with the 19 tooth, only showing 5 mph less than actual speed.
  11. Hello monte lovers. I recently installed a muncie 4 speed in my 72 monte with 350. I have an 8 tooth drive gear and a 19 tooth driven gear for the speedometer. According to a calculation using the gear ratio and tire size, I need to have an 18 tooth driven gear with my 8 tooth drive gear. I bought one, dropped it in and the speedometer was way off, showing 15 miles under the actual speed. I removed it thinking that I should have counted the teeth before I put it in. When I removed it, I found that the teeth were messed up. Figuring that I didn't get the teeth meshed, I threw it out and put the 19 back in until I could get another 18. I got my second 18 and it did the same thing. I did take my time, using a number 1 square bit screwdriver while pushing it in to get things lined up. Is there something I am missing? Why is this happening. I am going to attach some pics but they are not the best. I have tried in many angles with different amounts of light and these are the best.
  12. Hey guys. I have a 1972 monte with stock 350, 4 barrel engine with 117000 miles. It has a Muncie 4 speed and 3.08 gears in the rear. The motor has not been tampered with, as far as I know. I bought it from the original owner last year and it had been parked since 1988. It has been smoking on start up so I decided to change the valve seals. I tore it down last night and got to thinking that this would be a great time to change the cam. My plans for the car are to drive it, a lot. I am not interested in racing but would like to have a nice sound and, although I am really not concerned with more power, a few more horsies are welcome. Would you have any recommendations on what specs I should look for in a cam? This is a budget minded upgrade at this time.
  13. I just got my car back after having the 3.08 installed. Seems pretty good. I only drove it a mile home so didn't get to evaluate it much. Looks like a good excuse for a drive tomorrow.
  14. It is my pleasure. I am glad to be contributing to the folks on here that have helped me so much.
  15. Looks like I will be going back to get that if possible.
  16. I think it was gray Sam. This car also had a switch for rear window defroster. It could have been a highly optioned car.
  17. I put my impact wrench on lowest setting and then use torque wrench to 100. I just made that number up, thinking it would be about right.
  18. Hey guys, I went to get a part off of a 1971 monte the other day. I decided to check it out real good while I was there just to see what it once was. I noticed that there was a wire coming off the rear view mirror. I tried to take a picture but the glass was just too dirty. Does anyone know what this could be for?
  19. Did it feel comfortable Larry? Were you concerned that it was too high for a long run? I'm used to my diesel truck which runs about 2000 at 65. Im just not familiar with what is too much for my 350. I wouldn't thing 2600 would be too high.
  20. Is that with an overdrive transmission? Do you feel comfortable with hours of driving at 65 MPH with that combo? Do you know how many RPMS you are turning?
  21. Hey guys, I recently put a 4 speed in my 72 monte with 350 and 2.73 gears in 12 bolt. I really like everything about it except for taking off in first gear. On level ground, the engine lugs a little bit. When taking off on an incline, you really have to slip the clutch. I plan on driving this car wherever I want, including hours of continuous running on interstate. I am wondering what a comfortable RPM range is for that type of driving. I know that a 4.11 or so would be very fun but I am more interested in a having a good driver. Thanks in advance.
  22. It is a Muncie handle on a hurst shifter. I got it from Ground Up. It gives you the dependability of the Hurst with original looks of the Muncie.
  23. I used a wire brush on a 4 inch grinder, then applied 2 coats of POR 15. I removed the exhaust and coated all that I could. I stopped at the rear axle. I have plans to drop it one day and clean the rear section, coat it and , paint the rear end, etc.
