Ryan, is that your Monte or one of your other cars.  That does look nasty, something definitely is broke.  My guess you will be tearing it down and building it back up as soon as possible.

Yeah, unfortunately it's the Monte. Just as I get it running back close to normal too. I'll just use this as an excuse to build a bigger one! 😆 565 incoming!:BB:

  2. Well..... this came out of the crankcase on my car. I changed the oil last fall and the same thing came out of it. I never put water in the radiator or ran it for more than maybe a minute total since then. It's just sat in the garage with water in the bottom part of the block only. I'm thinking this has a cracked block or sleeve. I initially thought maybe a head gasket, but if there's no water in that part of the engine then it can't be. Garage is also heated, so its very doubtful it froze. Any thoughts? Runs ok otherwise but the milkshake oil is no bueno

For Me, Darwin applies to all 1970 Monte Carlos.

In my opinion, the 70 was most beautiful, but the most poorly assembled car of that time.

I picked up my Monte summer of 70 and drove across the US and got into a rain storm in Mississippi .. The windshield and rear windows had major water flowing in the windshield and rear window…. After much pleading, the dealership in Jacksonville Florida finally agreed to fix it… Their solution was to use a glue gun and force it under the chrome trim.  It looked like pure crap…

In the process, they dropped the glue gun on my hood and cause ugly damage… The hood fix was worse than the damage... It had body grinder marks dead center of the hood. They actually tried to hide the fact that they messed it up,  but the body putties and paints of that time would shrink and the imperfections would show after it sat in the sun for a few days…

I loved the car,  but it never fit together correctly and looked like it was assembled on the Planet of Apes. GM was having serious Union issues in 1970 and it shows on the 1970 Monte Carlo…

No offense meant by using the term Darwin … I spent the next 15 years reassembling my first Monte and correcting  body alignment issues …  I clearly saw the 71 and 72 as a vast assembly improvement    So, It doesn't surprise me that you're finding problems with the glass….

    Darwin at work.

So if you have a perfect Monte consider yourself lucky.. I've spent 52 years with the Monte and they all have some level of body alignment issues….

I misunderstood you when you said Darwin haha, no offense taken! You can probably see why this had me scratching my head when I went to put the window back in.

It seems they just etched the glass on either side, willy nilly! Makes me wonder how they manufactured it.... Did they form it to shape first, then etch? Or, was it etched on a flat piece and then formed? It seems if they cut the shape of the window out on a flat piece first, they could make left and right windows from the same template depending on which way it was formed. That would explain the etch being backwards sometimes.

My car is a 72 by the way. If I'm decoding the glass correctly, the 26-42 means PPG plant #26, made in April of 1972. I noticed the passenger side windows and rear glass are dated 4/72 while the driver side (the side that reads from the outside) is dated 5/72. It's quite possible its been changed out before.

Any chance they're aftermarket, date coded replacement windows?

Anything is possible with this car 😆. I assumed it was original because of how beat up and scratched it is. It could have been replaced by the previous owner in the past. It really needs replacing again, I just don't have the money for it right now.

    Darwin was right.

Not sure what provoked that comment but ok I guess. 🙄

To add to this thread, my passenger rear side window is backwards as well. Driver side reads normal. Rear window and passenger side are backwards. The glass in my car must have been made on a Friday! 😄

  6. Wow! Cool! So mine must have been a factory error, etched backwards or something. The rear glass definitely only goes one way, I tried putting it both ways and there's about an inch gap on either side when it's in wrong. When the glass is in correctly, with the concave part going inwards, the etch is backwards on the outside of the car!

I just went out & looked. Like Scott said, I can read it correctly from the outside of the car. What way is your etching?

For some reason its not allowing me to upload pics from my phone or my computer. I just tried to fit the window both ways and its super obvious which way its supposed to go. The odd part is the way that it fits, the etch is facing inside. Yu could read it from sitting inside the car, looking out. The etch I'm referring to is the one on the lower edge, middle of the widow. It says PPG, Soft Ray, Flo-lite, and a few other things.

I'm not sure it's physically possible to put the window in backwards, there are subtle compound curves that would stop it from laying flat.

It definitely had a TON of silicone around the edge and it leaked pretty bad. That's why I'm curious. It had the etch facing inside the car.

  9. That’s wild!! 3 times in a row!! Summit just called me the other day to tell me the bumper I ordered a year ago was pushed out again. 😂 They switched suppliers for me so I hope to see it soon. I thought it was nice of them to call and let me know what’s going on. Always had top customer service with them.

  10. E36 Bimmer is an awesome car, an enthusiast favorite! You mentioned the clutch line coming off the brake master cylinder and it reminded me of some of the Volkswagens I've worked on in the past. Those are the same way.

It's quite a bit of effort doing exhaust work in the air with a lift, say nothing about on the ground under the car! You still got it Rob! Most of the German makes are not easy to work on either. I still have a whole drawer full of specialized tools for my VW that I never use anymore.

  11. I had a heck of a time trying to get the air out of the lines on my car. We finally resorted to the 2 man method. Still couldn't get a solid pedal until we put about 2 quarts of brake fluid through it. It seemed to help to pump the pedal a few times before opening the bleeder screw.

  12. I’ve been struggling with another build that’s been tying up my lift and half the shop. Some of you that follow me on fb already know! 😂

My Monte still sits in hibernation waiting for it’s chance to get a once over. Unfortunately the issues I’ve encountered with the current project are going to put me out of commission for the GM nationals.

I hope y’all have an awesome time at the eastern meet and post lots of pictures!!!

Here’s some pictures of my “piece of junk!” I just want it to be done at this point so I can get back to the Monte!!! I miss that V8 roar!

    It’s a 1996 Integra GSR, K24/K20 swapped, 13:1 compression, 276/274 cams, 6 speed transmission.

    Broken transmission 👎😭

Mc1of80, would you say to at least start will changing the gearing before anything else? In the future Iam thinking of possibly going LS/4l80 (or possible 6spd) but that is far down the road, 3.31’s would still hold that?

2.73's are highway gears. Typically with a cam like that, you want a loose converter and a numerically higher gear ratio. The cam card will give you an idea of what works well. I have 4.10's and 3200 stall with a similar cam. It spins the tires just fine but forget about the highway. A good compromise would be a 3.73. It's aggressive, but not so aggressive you can't drive on the highway.

Mc1of80 is right on the money, swap your gears first. It will make a world of difference.

  14. Definitely not enough stall if you have 2.73 gears. I'd go somewhere around 2700-3000 maybe higher. It could also be that double pump mechanical secondary carb. Those things like a steep gear and high stall or 4 speed. You might consider swapping to a vacuum secondary carb.

Ryan do you have a transmission guy? Maybe talk to someone over at Terry's they have always been pretty knowledgeable in the past. A guy that used to work for him did a th350 for me several years ago and did a great job on it. Just a thought. Could ask Bob Bardou also he may have a suggestion.

Moe over at B&M did the 400 in my car. He's over in B-ville. I've heard good things about Terry's, maybe I'll give them a call. They're a lot closer to me too.

    Ryan,

from what I've read, the th475 is a much heavier duty than the th400.

the biggest differences I can see are the extra bolts on the torque, the disc brake E brake, straight cut gears, (that can be louder than most transmissions), but easier on wear and eating the horses, and has a deeper first gear. Sounds like an interesting choice for drag racing.......

    Hope that helps, Scott.

I did notice it had a 6 bolt converter on it. Sounds like I hit the TH400 jackpot! I may use this as a base to build a new race transmission. If it has all heavy duty guts inside, then it seems like a good choice. I wonder if the straight cut gears will whine like a rock crusher? That would be really cool! I may have to change my rear gear to make use of this trans though. I have a 4.10 out back and 1st gear is already really short on my 400. If first gear gets any deeper it will be useless.
