  1. Here's my situation. I removed my old style alternator which had the 10DN plug & the external regulator & replaced it with a 1 or 3 wire self exciting alternation with a SI plug connection. To wire everything up I Attached the yellow wire removed from the old alternator to terminal 1 & the blue wire to terminal 2. I also pulled the plug from the voltage regulator and ran jumper wires from terminal 2 to 4 and terminal F to 3. Car seems to be charging correctly but now my radio volume pulsates or go's up and down. Car has a mild cam & at idle it almost seems as if the radio volume goes up and down with the lope of the engine. Anyone got any thoughts on what might be wrong? THANKS IN ADVANCE for your time & thoughts.
  2. I'm impressed with the double snorkel you added. That's one of the reasons I'm considering changing carbs. The double snorkel air cleaner I have won't fit on my Edelbrock since I added an electric choke.
  3. I'm currently not happy with my Edelbrock carb. Rather the rebuild it I'm considering going back to Rochester or Carter 4BB. I still have the factory intake on the car with original throttle & kick down linkage. The choke coil assembly on the intake has been trashed & I know I'd need to replace that. What else might I need please.
  4. Scott, thought you might be on to something so I got a cheap flash drive. it did play for about 3 seconds which is 3 seconds longer than the expensive one would. Not sure if that should be a indicator to me of the problem or not. Next move is to check & double check grounds.
  5. I have tried that, I've even gone from the USB being locked up to radio mode and the radio will play fine. There's something about the engine running that causes this. I got to thinking last night maybe it's a voltage drop or voltage increase messing things up so I think today I'll start the car, disconnect the positive post from battery & see if it'll play. The cars got or had a few other weird issues, it's almost to the point where I'm thinking of calling it "CHRISTINE". If you ever saw the movie you'd understand. If you haven't, you should check it out.
  6. I have a 1970 Monte Carlo in which I installed a Custom Autosound USA 630 Radio. Besides being a radio, it also has a USB port. Wired the radio as per instructions. Radio works great. Problem comes when listening to a flash drive in the USB port. If I have the key turned to accessory position or turned forward in the ignition on position the flash drive will play music all day long. The instant you start the engine the flash drive locks up. This does not happen with the radio. I've even ran a power wire from the battery to the power supply for the radio & the flash drive still locks up the instant the engines started. Crazy I know. Autosounds No HELP. they won't even reply back. I thought for sure running 12 volts direct from battery would eliminate any potential feedback or voltage surge or voltage drop problem. You guys are some of the smartest & of course nobody knows these Montes better than club members so any thoughts? I will add that the car still uses the original alternator, voltage regulator set up.
  7. Canuck that's some excellent information, THANK YOU. Looking at the horsepower ratings for 71 I can see a 95-horsepower difference depending on which way it's read. I'm guessing GM came up with a clever way to make it look like they were really being environmentally friendly by giving the engine a net horsepower rating that looked lower than customers had become familiar with seeing which was the gross horsepower number. And based on your experience I can only assume the horsepower was even worse by 74. THANKS FOR SHARING THE INFO!!!!!!!!!!!
  8. I currently own a 1970 Monte Carlo 350ci 4bb. I believe it was factory rated 300hp. I previously owned a 1974 Monte Carlo 350ci. 4bb. factory rated 160hp. I understand the 74 ratings were with smog pump & other pollution items. Those were all removed. So the best I can tell both engines externally were the same. Both engines have same spark plugs, same gap, both have HEI distributors, both set 10 degrees BTDC timing. Here's what I don't understand, It seems to me that the 74 rated 140hp less had better take off power, more torque and would have probably been quicker in a 1/4 mile than the 70. Did all the pollution crap on the 74 reduce the horsepower 140hp. Are both engines internally the same? Am I expecting to much from my 70?
  9. The rear of the hood on the driver's side sits just a tad high. Problem is I can't adjust it or lower it as it's hitting the wiper blade arm. Has anyone else experience this or know of an adjustment I'm overlooking?
  10. Okay I'm sorry to say I'm still confused. Either I have a odd ball car or what people say there selling me is incorrect. Here's what I know. I've been told I have a early production 70 Monte due to the fact it has chrome trim below the headlights. If that's true or not or makes a difference I don't know. The hood hinge springs on my car have 25 coils. Everything I've purchased & received has 29. One of my springs weighs 1.8lbs. The ones I'm receiving weigh on average 1.1lbs. My spring has larger coils & will almost hold my hood up when fully lifted. If it was to stay up the slightest bump or even a sneeze will bring it down in a hurry. And God help you if your under the hood. To date I've ordered both the 384680 from Summitt & the 3848272 from a independent vendor. I just ordered another pair this time 3907626 which is not on the list above but comes up as a replacement during internet search. Wish me luck otherwise I may just go with a broomstick. BY THE WAY, THANKS FOR THOSE WHO GAVE ADVICE!!!!!!!!
  11. Thanks Dennis. By the way I used to live in Eastgate, where cars like eggs are cheaper by the dozen. Not sure if you'll get that, depends on how old you are. Years ago Jeff Wyler used that saying in his advertisements.
  12. So far I've ended up with two wrong sets of hood hinges. There smaller diameter & have more coils & don't come close to holding the hood up. I'm now looking at a pair from Original Parts Group. There part number #CH20357-PR. Has anyone gave these a try or know where I can find a set. PLEASE NOTE...GM3848272 will not work, there smaller diameter & lighter duty. Cars a 70 with 350CI.
  13. I'm trying to determine the correct center cap for the rally wheels on a 1970 Monte Carlo 350CI.
  14. Hey, I like that website, Thanks for the tip. While they have a lot of stuff I didn't find anything to fix my problem.
  15. No there not rattling but they are loose at the bottom & don't fit tightly against the body.
  16. On the chrome trim around the headlights there held in place by two screws & a spring clip at the bottom. My clips are broken. Does anyone have a fix for the clips?
  17. Is there a specific spot to start at? I'm assuming that you're suggesting that I check the resistance of my ground wires at both the gas tank & at the dash & instrument panel. Would that be correct?
  18. I'm trouble shooting my gas gauge which stays in the 3:00 position. Fairly sure problems in the sending unit but in addition to gas gauge not working all my idiot lights (oil, temp, generator, emergency brake) are extremely dim. Dash lights are bright, clock works all ground wires are hooked up. Could my gas gauge problem & dim idiot lights be related? Also, if I do need to replace my sending unit, where can I find a removal tool?
  19. Sadly, I've come to the conclusion that my fuel sending unit is bad. Gauge is fixed at the 3:00 position & after checking the ground & the brown wire feeding into the trunk area problem still exists. MY issue is trying to purchase a new sending unit it looks like a one pipe (tube) sending unit is the most popular, but my tank has two pipes. (tubes) Car's a 1970 350CI 4BB. I'd like to order the correct sending unit, but I'm confused. ANY advice on which one to order.
  20. The real problem here is that I have very limited mechanical knowledge. I just swap a part for a like part. I was completely unaware & never thought that changes needed to be made. As a teenager in high school I worked at a gas station pumping gas & working on my own car but that was many years ago. One of the reasons for buying the car was to recapture some of my youth & have some fun fixing up a older car. It's beginning not to be so much fun & I'm starting to think that it might be cheaper in the long run to just drop the car off at a repair shop & let them fix it.
  21. To the best of my knowledge I didn't melt any wiring but I sure did fry some electrical components. While I'd like the amp meter to work I can live without & if I can figure it out always mount a remote voltage gauge. Losing the other items is a killer, especially since most were brand new, like the trunk latch, & stereo. But by far the biggest loss was the tach. I really don't want to pull the dash again. I keep hoping since the distributor was replaced & upgraded & switching the alternator from a 3 wire to single wire and removing the voltage regulator that maybe the tachs still good & I just have something miss wired or not connected. Trying to look at the wiring diagram is extremely difficult & confusing. For now the cars just sitting as I've found it's not a good ideal to work on it when your in a bad mood.
  22. Think I've got the car from the devils den. I bought this 72 Monte in Dec. & have pretty much spent time everyday working on it to make it road worthy. My Mom just had knee surgery & needed my assistance for a few days to help her during her recovery period. I thought it'd be a great opportunity to drive the Monte back home & show my old buddies my pride & joy. On the way down when I stopped for gas I noticed a rotten egg odor. Try as I might I could not find a cause or the source off the smell. I just told myself maybe the cars running to rich & that's what's causing the odor. That was a big mistake on my part. A few hundred miles later the car just died. Upon opening the hood smoke was pouring out of the battery. Had no choice but to have the car towed to a local repair center. Two days later I was shocked at and for the 1st time started to regret ever buying the car. Many of the items I had just purchased & replaced were now trash. Based on the info told to me by the repair shop in 1972 the Monte had a alternator & a voltage regulator. Starting in 1973, all GM alternators now had the regulator built internal, therefore a separate regulator was not needed. At some point in time, the original alternator on the car failed. The replacement alternator was the new style which had the internal regulator. That meant the external regulator should have been removed & the wiring at the regulator modified. That was never done. As a result, the alternators internal regulator & external regular fought each other. The result was the alternator kept charging the battery & just cooked it plus other electronics. Here's the list of items lost, Battery, distributor, radio, tachometer, amp gauge, TomTom navigation unit, remote trunk latch. I'm wondering if other electronics were damaged too even though there now working. Per the repair shops recommendation (no time to really think about it) I agreed for them to switch the alternator from a 3 wire system to a single wire. Also had to installed a new distributor, & battery just to get the car back on the road. So far so good, seems to have done the trick. I will be leaving Cincinnati in the morning & heading back home to Danbury CT. so I suppose the real test is soon to happen. Hopefully by reading this maybe someone else will be spared what I'm going through.
  23. As a newer member of this great club I'd like to ask some questions about the upcoming Eastern Meet. First I think I must explain that it's just about impossible for me to be away from my dog for any period of time so if I was to attend the show she's have to be with me. So, what would be your thoughts on a dog attending? Good or Bad ideal? Second, having never attended such a event & since I'd have my dog, would I be better off parking in the general parking lot or should I register & park with the club. My concern is that if I wanted to leave early & return to the hotel can you get your car out if your parked with fellow club members. Thanks for any advice & thoughts you can share.
