If you have a 700R4 and get the Lens etc. it runs around $80.00 but it comes with the required ratchet arrangement and all necessary hardware to connect it to the Xsmn. The only problem I had was with the new pattern, I couldn't properly adjust the netrual safety switch. It will now start with the shifter in OD and the backup light will light both in reverse and neutrial.

They should carry them at AutoZone and O'Reileys. Take your old one with you and they can match it up for you.

With the serpentine setup, it requires a reverse flow water pump that also requires a different fan if not using an electric fan. With the pump/fan turning the opposite direction the fan would be attempting to blow the air forward through the radiator.

Rubbing compound on a damp cloth works great.

Check Lowe's or Home Depot. They have many widths and thickness.

I finally located a neutral Safety and backup light switch that mounts on the console. This is a picture of it and it mounts to the linkage inside the console. It also shows what vehichles that use it. http://www.partsamerica.com/ProductDetail.aspx?MfrCode=NIE&MfrPartNumber=NS36581
Unfortunately they no longer sell the switch but it is still available at aftermarket sights. If you need it and can't locate any, contact me.

If you want it for your MC, have him measure the distance between the knobs and the height and width of the radio protruding through the dash.

I have that linkage hooked up but it locks up in park unless I have the column shifter hooked up and physically have to pull toward the steering wheel and then down to get it out of park.
-
I just installed Bucket seats and Console shifter. I thought that I could remove the column shift lever and everything would work. Not So. If I place the column shifter in park, I can remove the ignition key and and the steering wheel locks. Rather difficult to drive that way. Unfortunately the column is locked and won't rotate. If I have the column shifter in any other position then I can't remove the ignition key.
I know I am not the only one to run into this problem but haven't seen it discussed before.

If you go with a 200-4R it is a bolt in. Drive-shaft length is the same. Very simple to hookup a switch for the lock-up torque converter. You do have to install the TV cable. If you can find one in a vehicle (junk yard) and get everything from the donor car it will be much simpler and cheaper. If you have Craigslist in your area you might be able to locate one there for a very reasonable cost.

All I know is that I changed from a 10 to 12 bolt without any change to the driveshaft. That is until I had a 700-R4 installed.

I am not sure what all he did but I got the car back yesterday and it runs great. Those 3.55 gears in that 12 bolt really makes a difference. I will be ordering a crate engine putting out 400-410 HP next week. Looking forward to getting it up and running. Still have to order headers, intake, carb, etc. I already have MSD 6AL with distributor but haven't installed it due to stock 2 barrel engine installed now. I am also considering installing a serpentine belt system that I took of a GM 5.0 liter engine.

Thanks guys. That link http://bowtieoverdrives.com provides a wealth of information. The only thing it doesn't show is the measurements from idle to WOT and the distance from throttle shaft to point of attachment of TV cable.

My 71 has a 2 barrel 350. I recently installed a 12 bolt 3.55. I had a 2004r installed and the xmsn mechanic couldn't get it to shift properly. He went back through the xmsn, replaced the valve body, and even pump. No luck so he asked if he could install a 700r4. He is still having problems getting it to shift properly and has replaced the valve body in it also. He has done numerous 700r4 conversions previously without any problem.
I assume the carb is the original 2 barrel rochester. Can anyone provide any guidance? I am sure someone has had this problem also. Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

I purchased an Eaton limited slip for $350 new on ebay. I am very happy and also installed 3.55 gears. I should get my car back today or monday from having a 2004R installed. Transmission and installation for less than $800 from a friend.

They have all the specs on engine, body, xmsns, rear ends, body, height, wt, capacities, just about anything you want to know plus suppliers of restoration parts. Lots of good information.

I have gotten a restoration packet for both my 57 BelAire and my 71 MC. It really contains a wealth of information. I think it is available for all GM cars.
Call 800-222-1020 (GM) and ask for a "restoration packet" for your car. Have your VIN number and mailing address ready and then wait. I was told it would take 4-6 weeks. Had them both in less than two weeks. Unfortunately, for most of Canada, this service is NOT free. it is free in the US. EST hours are: 8am - 5:30pm M-f.

The easiest way is to put a mark on a tooth on both the ring and pinion. Magic marker or dab of grease and count the number of teeth. Do it twice to ensure the number of teeth is correct on both. Then divide the number of teeth on the pinion by the number of teeth on the ring gear. You will know then what your rear-end ratio is. My 12 bolt was 2.73 and I changed to 3 series 3.55 gears with Eaton L/S. Eaton was $350 on ebay new.

I have already purchased a MSD ignition, Distributor and Coil. I haven't installed them and won't until I install a crate engine. Does anyone know if thee is any problem with the operation of the this Tach with the MSD ignition?

C.B. that looks like a very neat installition. A job well done. Thanks for the valuable information. I also plan on installing the swap.
Mike, do you by chance have the part # of those 5W. bulbs? Thanks again guys.

Thanks Big GearHead.
It is always great to get the correct answer to almost any question asked on this FGMC forum.

I have a 71 with a 10 bolt and a 2.9? rearend and would also like to change to a 3.73. I have been told that the carrier will not work with 3.+ gears. Can anyone verify if that is true or not. I want to install a 200-4R xmsn because of the overdrive and not having to change the driveshaft.
-
Many prefer the 200-4R to the 700R-4 due to the gear ratio, overdrive ratio and ease of changing from the 350. The driveshaft length is the same for the 200-4r, the 700 is longer and requires a shorter driveshaft.

If I remember correctly, mine is installed on top of the carpet. Do you have the bracket that goes under the rear portion of the shifter bracket? If you don't have it (mine was originally bench seats) you can purchase one.
