  1. Well, I’m new here but have learned that a 71 SS has an “L” on the trim plate if it’s built in Kansas and it looks like the Baltimore cars had a “BF” on the trim plate for the SS in 71. Best is build sheet and original motor but these trim tag ID’s I just mentioned are as solid. Then obviously you can look closely at the car for the SS signs of what should be there. Rear end, tranny, load leveler system, boxed lower control arms and on and on.

Well heck Bill. If I would have known you were a professional restorer I wouldn’t have bothered. You already know, have and understand what It takes.

I don’t do it professionally, it’s just a hobby that got out of control, happens to a lot of us I guess. But it keeps my after work hours and weekends full that’s for sure. It may take me 4-6 years to finish a car because of my work and money — typical I guess. Here’s a few pics of my other restored cars:

  3. Hey Dennis I’m not worried, maybe I can fill up my 25 year old daughters bedroom and she will get the hint LOL😁. But in all honesty I do have the space and a full shop, this is my 6th frame off restoration. I’m finishing up a 68 El Camino SS 396/350 that is triple black with bucket seats console and original Muncie 4 speed. So it may be a bit before I tackle the Monte but when I do I’ll be all in. Looking forward to it. Thx for the cool pics👍

Congrats on joining the group. It’s well worth it. Your car looks a lot like mine did. Complete, little rust but no good rubber. Mine came from California. It’s definitely been a fun experience and I have a very long way to go. I hope you have fun like I am. Don’t think of it as a project think of it as a parts searching adventure. Keep the pics coming

Thx Dennis, will do on the pics👍

Welcome to the best place to see how your SS was built!! "Nice save" as I would say. There are some members down your way. I have a goo friend in  Ocala that is restoring a '72 Custom. Looks like a very good start on a SS!!post-259-0-61935100-1474727657_thumb.jpg

Thank you. Hopefully some of the documented original pics I will be/am posting here will help everyone with there future Monte Carlo restoration endeavors.
I used to live in Ocala, great place!

    Bill,

Welcome aboard the boards, we hope you like what you see here and decide to become a full fledged dues paying member of the club.  That looks like a great Monte to start a restoration project on and a bonus is it is an SS454.  Keep the pictures coming because we love Monte pictures.... we also like to see Monte owner pictures so we can connect a member face to their car.

Thanks Rob, I plan on becoming a paid member hopefully by weekends end. Thx for the invite, much appreciated👍

  7. Welcome from South Florida! I’m a new member as well and I have to tell you this site is excellent, members have been very helpful to me, and site is full of information. Your car looks great!

  8. Canuck, thx so much for digging in on this. I’m glad I sent a picture of my BF trim tag to you guys thus initiating this whole conversation and getting a possible breakthrough started. I just bought the car and was digging around for information on my particular car and I couldn’t find anything listed that would decipher that BF in its particular location. I’ve owned a few 69 Z28’s and know the significance of the X33 or X77 in a similar trim tag location on those cars.  Being a new 71SS owner and forum member I am amazed at the fervency in which this forum has scrambled to find an answer. Agreed we still need to see some more 71SS tags to confirm, but I’m feeling pretty confident at this point.  Thank you again.

  9. The passenger side quarter can definitely be patched, cut out the areas needing repair going beyond the rust until you hit good metal (using existing body lines as a guide), then cut out what you need from a quarter skin. Again from the one picture I see there is no need for a full quarter on the passenger side. I would like to see a picture of the driver side so I can see what it needs. But the passenger side from what I see is not bad.

  10. Thanks for the help everyone. I have a B where it’s supposed to be so it’s a Baltimore built car for sure. But it’s interesting that at least two others here also have the BF—-so I just joined here a few days ago, just bought my car a few days ago and now I’ve unfolded a mystery for us to unravel😁
