Anyone heard anything from down under. I was hoping after the inspection we'd have a new happy member

Hi DragCat, yes apologies for the gap in posts, has been a very busy time of late. Yes I did go ahead and get the inspection done, it all seemed above board, a few bushes front and back need replacing , rear main seal needs looking at, door rubbers need replacing, little surface rust under rear parcel shelf and a minor patch of panel putty in one section along with a few minor scuffs on chrome, but the car has been fully resprayed previously.  Motor/trans all seem in good original order, one photo underneath I can see pan imprinted hydro Matic, so a good sign all original. Overall it's really in great condition, tried bringing the price down one or two thousand to within my budget, as this past few weeks it blew out a bit due to some unexpected large bills which needed paying, after my offer he said 45k firm, so just hanging on a few more weeks to see how things go, and by then will be able to offer a bit more. He has out the price up now to 49000 Aus $, so more negotiating might be needed I think,

Yea the build sheets are rare, and the sales invoice also a nice touch of your soon to be Monte. I have neither ☹️

Ha, well here's hoping bud, thanks!! Sorry to hear you don't have either, have you tried to track them down, I suppose you have?

For lack of a better comparison, these things are your (soon to be 🤞) Montes birth certificate.

Heres to hoping the inspection checks all the right boxes and things are as represented by the seller🥃. Keep us posted.

    Thanks Glen, will do💪

Things are lookin’ quite nice there, Nath! Build Sheet AND bill of sale… NICE!!  The build sheet for my ‘71 is in the safe deposit box, so I don’t have it accessible to compare it to yours. However, boxes 55 and 56 are peculiar 🤔

Thanks Glen!! So these forms are very precious by the sounds of it, if you keep yours in a safe 😲!! Yeh, now you point that out, those boxes do look a little odd, ha. I wonder if one of the workers were trying to have a laugh!!!

  5. G'day group, hope everyone has been well. Quick update, booked a vehicle inspection for this Friday. I asked the owner to send me some original docs that came with the car, and here they are. By the list, it sounds like it's quite optioned. Don't know to much about these build sheet info or codes, what's most important is I want to make sure that the motor in the car at the moment is the original one, and matches the numbers on the build sheet. Although it's a bit hard to read, does anyone know exactly where the engine number would be located on the build sheet or on the engine in the car? Thanks gang☺️

You’re welcome, bud.  And what’s funny is I didn’t manage to get them out together to a show or cruise-in this past summer. I tried to alternate cars, but found myself in the ‘71 more often as the ‘70 was in the trim shop for a new interior for a while.  Was this/close once, but the better half got stuck at work late and it was too last minute to recruit a friend to drive one of them to the show.  For now, this is pretty much the extent of their simultaneous appearance…

    Fantastic stuff!!! Love that green👍

    Nath,

Last musing, I promise!  Here’s a portion of the bill of sale I drafted for the ‘70.  Just a generic description of what I wanted to document what was promised/negotiated work the sale:

“Seller to include with the purchase of this vehicle assorted original parts including: intake manifold, carburetor, ignition distributor/cap, bumper guards and factory FM radio.

Seller also to include relevant documentation associated with the vehicle, including: receipts & invoices for work done to the vehicle, handwritten notes/bill(s) of sale, build sheet, "Protecto Plate", owner's manual and previous owner registration documents.”

Hi Glen, thankyou for that, your bill of sale sure has given me some guidelines if I decide on the purchase. I'm glad both your buying methods worked out well, and by well I have to say both a 70 and 71 ss wow, they must look pretty good side by side👍. All the forum members have been such a great help as I knew nothing about 1st gen montes, but I keep finding myself researching them every spare minute I have, and really are starting to grow on me haha

I don’t disagree with anything you posted. But I will say if you fly out and look at the car and want it , now you have to fly home and drive back out. Eliminate the flying. Either way the car has to be looked at by the potential buyer. I understand it’s a long drive to look at a car but you can still say no. But if you want it you leave with it. It also eliminates the possibility of it being sold from under you or certain parts being taken off the car. Just my opinion. I want to see it, feel it, hear it and drive it. And if I like it, buy it. Or walk away and say thanks for showing me the car.

Also a very valid point there too Dtret. Yes there is lots of things to consider, and yes, most people are genuine, but there are a select few which are not, and it's always a risk. If I had the time, I would definately make a week long trip of driving to see it, taking my father, and if I like it, driving it back, but unfortunately I do not, hence if purchased will be transported across by enclosed carrier, and just hope the owner comes to the party with honesty

I'll disagree with Dennis on this one 🤣 The owner says "numbers matching" (and no I didnt go back and look through all the pictures posted) are there pictures of the casting numbers (block/trans/ect) ? I don't want to be a Debbie downer but unless you get eyes on it pictures can hide a lot. Visit the resources page (link below) and get all the data/info you can. Yes a plane ticket adds to your cost, and yes there are honest people selling cars, but with my money I want eyes on it and be driven. Stupid little things like the gas gauge doesn't work can add to your money and time spent. As mentioned, rust is your biggest enemy and extremely expensive,

Theres probably nothing you run into that the members here can't help you through, but knowing up front eases the pain lol

Very valid point there DragCat, I do want to see, feel, hear it, but at the same time, unable to just drop plans and fly over, as I work full time, mainly 6 days a week and share care my 5 year old boy. That resource page you sent me is amazing, what a wealth of information, awesome!! I must admit, everyone on here has been super helpful so far and I am very appreciative of this 👍. That's why I am going to arrange a pre purchase inspection first, to check for rust, mechanical, matching numbers etc first, before I take the next step

Wow, a 29 hour drive or 3 hour plane trip from you.  It is funny, I never pictured Australia being that large.  I know it is large but I didn't know it was that large.  To me it sounds like you are on your way to owning a very nice first generation Monte Carlo.  Here in the states we often post how we were either the only first gen Monte at a car show/cruise or one of 2 or 3 but in your case it is pretty much a guarantee you WILL be the only one.

With summer coming in your area this may be a good time to pull the trigger on it.

    rob

Ha, thanks Rob, yeh it's a little bigger than people think over here, very open, takes a while to get from one side of the island to the other 🤣, but I see what you mean about being the only people at some car shows with 1st gen montes, so I'm guessing they are getting scarce over there also? Your right, summer is approaching, and a cruise car would be nice!! Looking at booking in a vehicle insp first and play it by ear...

  11. That's awesome DragCat, thanks so much for that info, very comprehensive indeed. I spoke to the seller again and he said that there is an original build sheet for the car, and apparently has spring marks on it, which sounds genuine, as the article mentions most sheets were found under seats, so that's definately a very important piece to have. The car is located in another state, so in order for me to look at it, it's a 28 hour drive, or a 3 hour plane trip, but very tempted. Yes I have enquired on a few local Chevy clubs, not a great deal on info from the members about specifically montes, but they said they do know of people and places which are able to source some chev parts over here in Oz. Thanks again DragCat, your advice has been awesome👍👍

Forgot to mention… I see the seller has the Protect-O-Plate. Does he also have a build sheet? (should, as it is a Baltimore built car).

If so, and all those numbers check out, you’ve got that girls’ “birth certificates”. These documents will nicely increase her value providing the original motor, trans and axle are also still with the car.

G'day Glen, yes the protect O plate is with the car, 12 bolt which I assume is the original what this model came with, and as he mentioned last night when I enquired, he did say something like he had a piece of paper that listed what options the car had, so would this be the 'build' sheet that you mention?

    Welcome Nath!

Well look at it this way for comparison,  a 1971 402 Chevelle optioned the same way would most likely start in the mid 30's in ok shape.

In 1971 there were  roughly 8633 402 Monte Carlos built. How many surviving today?

How many first generation Monte Carlos have you seen where you live? If you want the same options as a Chevelle SS, better ride, class, style and uniqueness then you found it!

Thanks mate, yes I have been doing quite a bit of research and found the production numbers, have enquired on a few Aussie chev clubs, and nobody really knows too much about them, but it's looking like there is quite a following for these in the US, and as another member mentioned, prices are increasing over there where you guys are, so that has to be a positive sign, just hasnt taken off over here yet

Ive posted the link of the car, so the more experienced members can get a closer look at it. The ad says it came from GA in the US, maybe also someone here knows the car.

Thanks for that DragCat, my phone wouldn't let me put up the advert so thankyou for doing that😊 and the info. I could as specified he is asking 45k which is around that 28k mark us$, and he has already dropped the price, so may just try my luck and see if he can drop another 5 and see what happens ha

    Nath,

First, welcome to FGMCC website.  We hope you like what you see here and if that is so, you will consider becoming a full fledged dues paying member.

Mark is right.  We would need more information on the car you are interested in.

The majority of first gen Monte's had a turbo-hydromatic 350 or 400 transmission.  The 402 is considered a Big Block engine and more desireable than a 350 or 400 but not super rare.

The key is condition, condition, condition.  How much rust, mileage, bench or bucket interior etc , etc.

Give us a bit more information and if you can direct us to some pictures would be a help.

    rob

Hi Rob, thanks for that. I spoke to the chap last night, and from what he can tell me, from his knowledge, the paint is original, it's a matching numbers car, with a few aftermarket bits replaced like a mild cam, headers etc, factory options were bucket seats, console, rear speakers in parcel shelf, power steer and windows. Vinyl roof may have been replaced, but current owner not quite sure. Alot of this was done before the current owner had it, and swears no rust is present. Interior is good and rubbers are fine, he has all the spec and options list and papers with the car, mileage is 80000km I think, but unsure if this is correct so would this make it desirable also? And for the asking price of $28k us dollars, would this be around the correct price range for this model and condition?

  16. Hi there forum. I'm just putting the subject out there, I'm in Australia and looking for some info before I go ahead and look at purchasing a 71 Monte Carlo 402 3sp console auto, factory air, power steer/windows and wondering if anyone could shed some info on whether this model is collectable, value, issues with the car, as there isn't much of a following over here. Thanks for reading, Nath
