  1. I don't have any vac advance ability actually.

I have richened it up to stock specs when I did the head change because my buddy with the LM-1 has moved to Kansas City and I wanted to be safe. It still ran hot though. I would like to get an A/F meter on it though, just to be safe.

  2. Hey all, since adding the new heads, I had been tinkering with the idea of making some new bushings to adjust the amount of mechanical advance that the MSD distributor would add in. I had been running 16 initial, and 37 fully advanced for several years. I also have a 3000 stall which is when all of my advance is "in" too, so I figured if the engine isn't loaded, why not advance it a little more? Anyway, I am now running 20 degrees initial, and 37 fully advanced and I am shocked to see the results. The throttle response is improved (less sluggish) and my engine temp is WAY cooler and steady. The engine would get hot in traffic (210-215) with the 16 initial, but with the 20 initial, I am running between 180 and 185 in 100 degree heat. It is seriously shocking as this is the lowest it has ever run idling around. I may try 22 and 36 next to see if the throttle response continues to get more crisp.

I just thought I would pass this on in case anybody else was having "hot running" issues this summer. It might be worth a try if your engine will allow for some more initial timing.

  3. Those 6 cylinder converters stall nicely behind lots of torque, but you might ask him about adding an anti-ballooning plate to it to keep your torque from shredding it. Most companies like B$M, TCI, Dacco, etc will reuse the GM converters but with making modifications to the insides like changing the blade angles and adding better components where necessary, so the stock stuff is a good start.

You get what you pay for, and for an engine at that power level, I would not cheap out. Think about how expensive it would be if you bought a cheaper converter and it blew up and trashed your tranny. You are now buying a new converter AND rebuilding or replacing a transmission. You can get a good converter for $500-$700 from what I have found. I have a "tight" ATI converter. I asked for that, and that is exactly what they delivered. Like Dave said, you wouldn't really tell it had a higher stall unless you get into the throttle.

Coana and ATI seem to be the names I hear the most about going behind strong engines.

  5. I just installed solid mounts, and I am very happy with how little vibration there is. And, they were tons easier to install than the stock style because it is easier to get to the lower bolts.

  6. Did you stay 3/8" or are yours some of the gargantuan 7/16" or 1/2"? Just curious. I stayed with 3/8 but my cam is pretty wussy.

I have also heard good things about Smith Bros. Post a pic if you get a chance!

  7. Dave, so far, it's a mixed bag of feelings. With the hesitation, it really puts a damper on throttle response. The new cam I put in fixed it I think. I took it out again last night for a bit. It was cold so my trans temp never got very warm and the car is always a little sluggish until it gets up to around 150 degrees or so but I still have a little carb tuning to do which is obvious to me. That is the negative. On the POSITIVE side, I got on it in second gear in several spots, and just while driving in second gear and nailing it, it was lighting up the tires which I don't remember it doing before. It also felt a little like the carb may still be getting cleaned out some. I had the bowls off but wonder if there wasn't a little fuel that may have turned to varnish or sludge in the main body passages. I think that will get better with time and driving. I'm not getting any more strange smells either which makes me happy! Not worrying about burning things or oil leaks!

  8. Last night I took the Monte to our car club meeting--the first time the car has been out of the garage in almost 1.5 years. I was very nervous about getting it out, I think just because it has been so long. Id seemed to do alright, no noises, and just a little bit of smell. I am guessing that I was burning off all of the seeped oil and cobwebs from the exhaust etc. I have a little bit of carb tuning to do as it has a little hesitation off idle but seems good otherwise. I didn't open up the secondaries yet as I need to have somebody help me check the throttle cable adjustment. I'll do that this week and change out accelerator pump cams and see if that helps the hesitation.

  9. Thanh, that ought to be awesome. I can't imagine going that fast, much less on the motor!

We ought to have a cool spring season if people are able to hit the tracks and put up some times! There are a lot of motors going together all over the nation and going into Montes!

  10. Here you go guys, I took a quick video when I got in from work. The volume of the video wasn't really representative of what it was like in the garage for some reason.

I just got the engine timed, carb roughly adjusted, and plug wires made up late last night. I warmed it up for a bit before I did the video today too so I wasn't revving a cold engine. I tried to show the pulses coming out of the exhaust, they are very strong, I believe stronger than they used to be, I would guess due to the increased compression.

I found out my idling problem--forgot to attach the brake booster vacuum line, and I had a spark plug wire not firing. Got those fixed and it is much better now. I have one small antifreeze leak between the intake and water pump to fix but I think that is it knock on wood!

Now I just need it to rain a lot to wash all of the chemicals and salt off of the roads.
