  1. It should be a simple swap.

It will bolt to the trans, you will need a externally balanced flexplate for a 454. Possibly a starter if yours has a small flexplate. Exhaust manifolds or headers. fan shroud for a bbc. How is your radiator? All the front mounts like you mentioned. that is off the top of my head, others can chime in.

What year 454? Is it stock?

  2. I have found that roller rockers have some noise. How long have you had your "break In" oil in it?

If it sounded like just one rocker I might pull the covers and check. If the sound is light and scattered I think it would be the nature of the rocker.

An exhaust leak will sound like a lifter ticking, it will usually go away under load.

  3. Nick,

    What are your goals?

You are now talking pistons and possibly heads. What carb is on your setup? What gear and converter?

500 hp is a lot of snot for a N/A 383! Are you willing to accept some street drive ability issues?

I love making horsepower but it does come at a cost!

  4. I am pretty sure that the 3 vent is for non vented gas cap. The 3 vent were used in 72. The tanks with a vented cap sometimes leave a trail of gas during launch. I run the 3 vent with 2 capped off and the other vents the tank. I am going to change to a 1/2 inch vent with a roll over valve when I sump the tank.

  5. Sorry,

All in, is a term for initial plus centrifugal advance. I run my timing at 38 degrees, There is 16 degrees of centrifugal advance in the distributor, plus 22 degrees initial at the timing mark, equals 38 degrees "all in"

  6. Cams have a lot of influence on vacuum. That seems like a lot of vacuum! Are you sure you are not on a "ported" vacuum source. Try to pull vacuum at another source. I don't understand your gauge!

36 is a good number for "all in" timing.

  7. Calculations say that the engine needs 708 cfm at 6000 rpm and 100% efficiency. Now your engine will never see 100% efficiency on the street. If you are going to stay under 6000 rpm I would say 650 would be the best carb for you. I am assuming that the posted cam specs are "advertized" not at .050 lift.

  8. With your 582 you are somewhat carb limited for strip duty. What is the RPM through the traps? Do you feel it nosing over at the big end? Work with what you have and have fun. See what you can do to improve 60 foot times. It will really help the numbers.

I have that Holley pump on my 505 it works well for me. If you want to make the line change to 1/2 inch you should consider changing the pickup to one like this robbmc pickup

I would just enjoy your time at the track and work with what you have for now.

Good luck, have fun, be safe.
