  1. My underhood and trunk lights are not working in both of my cars.  I think I understand that the lights for the trunk and under the hood are activated via a mercury switch that is somehow built into the light fixture itself. Unfortunately, I can't see anything on the light fixture that looks like it might be a mercury switch so either I do not have original light fixtures (possible but not likely) or I just have no idea what I am looking (MUCH more likely).

Does anyone have a picture of one of these lights sowing the mercury switch?

  2. ...

Have you been able to check the partial VIN stamped on the block near the oil filter?  Since the engine code is "T1203 CRN", we know it is a '70 Monte Carlo 454 engine built in late '69 in Tonawanda, so it is almost certain that the chrome valve covers and air cleaner lid were post-assembly "dress up" replacements.

    ...

Yep was able to verify both the engine and transmission have the partial vin stamped...it is numbers matching.

  3. I'm not sure but the dealers could have had a accessory install program. Maybe someone else on the forum will chime in. I like the way they look. I also like the finish on the air ride compressor. I've started to strip the silver paint of mine and it will look like yours. I'm still looking for a set of brackets.

Yeah, might have been a dealer add on my buddy's Corvette.

How are planning to get the finish on your compressor?  My other car does not have the compressor installed but I have one.  Unfortunately, it does not look so good so I will need to try to refinish it just not sure how to get the look.

  4. In the Chevrolet Parts catalog there is only one listing for valve cover and air cleaners, I don't see any options for chrome. I'm not sure that they had any options when ordering the cars new...

That's what I thought but a friend of mine is the original owner of a 1970 Corvette with a BB that has chrome valve covers.  My friend says his car came from the factory (or at least the dealer) with the chrome valve covers when he bought it new.

  5. My 1970 SS has very low miliage (26,000) and is supposedly all original and mostly unmolested.  That said, the engine has chrome valve covers and the breather lid is also chrome.  I don't beleive these are original to the car.

The guy I bought the car from says he did not put them on and he doesn't believe the previous owner would have either...the previous owner was a freind of his and was one who liked to keep his cars original.  However, his freind (the previous owner) did not buy the car new but bought it in 1976 and bought as more of a cruiser/driver (owned the car for 20 years and put 16,000 miles on it) than to be part of his garaged collection.

So can any of the knowledgeable folks here tell me definitively whether these peices are original or not?  Here are a couple of pictures.

    Thanks for your help.

  6. So in the new (to me) car I just got, the material on both sail panels has come unglued.  The material looks fine just need to reattach it on the back side.  Problem is, I have no idea how to remove the sail panels.  Can someone explain how this is done.

  7. My mistake, when I read your location before, I thought I read Kentucky (was probably reading my own location  ).  Anyway, I am not planning a trip to NC anytime soon.

  8. I have a 2 1/2 in exhaust system for sale, no clamps, all welds have been taper ground and smoothed including the flowmasters. This complete system has just been Jet-Hot coated with an unlimited lifetime warranty. This system is still bubble wrapped , this is a dual exhaust system that turns down behind the rear tires. This is the system that was on our show car before Stainless works got a hold to it. absolute show quality!

Was this a header system or manifold?

    Do you have any pictures?

  9. Looking great, Steve!  The "twins" should feel very loved to live in there!

So, since Dennis sort of let the cat out the bag, I will go ahead and share.  I just bought another triple black 70 SS.  The car is nearly a twin (hence Dennis' reference to the "twins") to the one I already have except it does not have power windows or locks and is in MUCH nicer condition…other than that the cars are virtually identical.  This one is an all original mostly unmolested car with 26,000 original miles. Here is a link to the Craigslist ad.

I decided to buy this one because I can enjoy it (drive it) almost immediately and get started on the restoration of the other one as soon as the building is finished rather than wait for winter to start and then have nothing to enjoy for what will likely be a rather long time.

I would like to thank Dennis for going to look at this car for me and providing me with the assurance it is what the seller claims so that I could buy it.

  10. Yes I am also concerned about the valves...specifically the springs.  My understanding is these big blocks like to break springs when they get over rev'd.  After putting belts back on, the car seems to run fine just very noisy...hopefully there was no damage caused.

As to the exhaust, I now have a massive hole in the back of one of the mufflers (see picture).  It blew it wide open.  Now I really need some exhaust suggestions.

  11. Ok, solved my own problem.  Seems when I kicked it down the bracket that hold the accelerator cable actually pulled forward just far enough to trap the linkage for the secondaries.  So my thought was right (secondaries were in fact stuck open) but unfortunately I was unable to see well enough down the venturi to see for certain what was going on.

All better now car starts and idles just fine.  However, the popping (more of a couple bangs actually) I heard when the engine was running away seems to have been the muffler...the beast is extremely noisy now

  12. Well I had the Monte out for a leisurely drive over to a friends house today.  The friend was not home so I just decided to cruise around a bit and then head back home.  Part of that cruise included an old country road that is flat and straight for a couple of miles so I decided to open her up.  Unfortunately when I let off the accelerator she didn't slow, in fact she continued to accelerate.  The engine was racing wildly, I never looked at the tach so I don't know how high it actually rev'd. Any way with in a few seconds I realized that the accelerator must be stuck so I put the car in neutral, shut off the ignition and guided her to the shoulder.  The engine popped (loudly) a couple of times and continued to run even after I had shut off the ignition (dieseling I guess) and only stopped as I got the car to a stop.  I sat there a moment thinking about what could have happened, pressed the accelerator a few times and it seemed fine so I attempted to restart the car.  It started right up and immediately went to full throttle without me giving any gas so I shut it off and called a wrecker.  Once I got the car home I looked a little closer at it but still do not see an issue other than the engine evidently slung the alternator belt as it was wrapped around the fan.  It was not broken (nor damaged) it had just slung off.  Anyway, I removed the breather and looked and it appeared the throttle was working fine but it also looked like the secondaries might be stuck open.  I did have a flash light to really check but when I opened the choke plate for the secondaries, it looked like I was looking straight into the intake manifold.

Has anyone had this happen to the Q-jet before?

  13. X2 on aluminized pipe. I have Hedman headers on my 454 I had a local shop build a 2 1/2 system that included a x crossover with me supplying Magnaflow mufflers. If I ever need to replace it I was going to try the full Magnaflow system. David

So if I go with the headers, who sells a good, pre-bent system?  I am looking for a system I can put on myself...I do not have a the ability to bend pipe nor do I own (yet) a welder so I am looking for something that will just bolt on.  Still not sure about the headers though

  14. Most of us have gone with a 2 1/2 inch system. I have one on my '71 SS. I used a shorty header, but they are kind of a pain. The factory manifolds are ugly to look at, but work pretty well and keep the engine bay cooler and quieter. My headers are close to everything; the suspension, the oil filter, the spark plugs....

I ordered a set of mandrel pre-bent pipes from the mufflers back, and had a muffler shop do the easy part from the mufflers forward.

    Thanks for the input.

I do not really mind that the stock manifolds are ugly as I am going for a restored car.

Do you know if anyone that sells a complete system from the manifolds back in stainless?

  15. Well the Snowball is finally melting smaller now.... Whew... spark plug wires installed, Heat stove installed, rad back in, ground straps hooked up and blower motor and housing reinstalled all today.

She is looking more and more like a 71 again.... And to think I was only contemplating a frame off, next thing you know a massive snowball and a thousand pieces everywhere.... well in baggies maybe and a third shed in the back yard. Hahaha

    Darren

I would love to see a picture of this "Heat Stove" installed.  I have seen other references (with a pictures) of the unit but I am not sure what it is and where it goes on the car.  Should my 70 big block (SS) have one?  If so, where would it be and what does it look like installed?

    Steve

  16. I asked the very question in this thread.  It seems there are differences but those described in that thread don't seem to impact the actual radiator mount.  That said, I would think that would have to be different because the big block radiators are larger.
