thank you Rob, Looking at the pictures in catalogs they look the same and have the same stock number up to a point. But at the end of the stock numbers one says its (24) and the other says its (1). I guess I will find out when I get to old power glide out.
Thank you, Bob

Well I found a 200R4 trans for my 1970 Monte. I will be taking out the Power Glide and installing the 200R4. Does anyone know for sure if I can use the power glides filler tube and dip stick on the 200r4.
Thank you, Bob

Thank you Rob, I will add those to my list.
Happy Easter, Bob

That's a great idea. I saw some with names and numbers. But was not even thinking of what you recommended. I will be sure to take a list with me next weekend.
Thank you, Bob

Happy Easter Everyone:
I am sorry to sound so stupid but I know nothing about this subject, so I need to ask. I attended a swap meet at Arco Arena last weekend. I noticed lots of chrome headers for small block (350) Chevys for as little as $50. I am going to another swap meet on May 1st in Turlock. And I am thinking I would like to get some that would fit my 1970 Monte.
So my question is, I saw lots of different shapes and sizes, and everyone said theirs were for the chevy small block. How do I know which ones will fit my stock 350 in my 70 Monte. I have heard of people buying them and then they do not fit because of the starter or the frame or any number of reasons.
Thank you for your advise, Bob

Thank you Kevin. I printed it out and will consider it. Bob

Thank you Winston:
That is very good information. I am new at all this and just finding my way around with all the information that is out there. I know I want to change my powerglide for a 200R4 just trying to find the best deal and the best information to make that decision. Bob

Thank you Kevin that is more of what I was looking for. Now to find one LOL. But I have lots of time to look the power-glide trans I have now is fine and nothing wrong with it. I just want an overdrive for mileage.

Thank you Steve; That was a great break down and some great pictures. It will sure help. Bob

Hello Winston:
Tell me more about the one on your garage floor.
Do you have the ocnverter with it?
When you say a fresh one, do you mean newly rebuilt or what?
What car is it out of?
What are the codes on the data?
How much would you like for it? That is if you want to sell it.
I wonder what shipping would be?

Thank you everyone. I am still not sure what trans is best. I have read that the Buick Grand National is the best and that the Monte Carlo SS is second best. But no one has mentioned what year these cars are.
I found an old listing from 06/25/06 on this site that list all the cars that the 200R4 comes in. But again it does not tell me which one I should be looking to buy.
From what I have read on the internet, and knowing you can not trust everything you read. LOL I think the list is missing some cars also. The list has Buick Regal on it but no mention of the Grand National, I have read that they came in some 1980 Corvettes but they are not on the list. And I would think if they were in a Corvette they would have to be pretty strong.
I have found the 200R4 trans for as little as $80, I am sure it needs building but do not wish to buy one that is on the no good list if there is such a thing LOL
thank you, Bob

Hi I am getting ready to take out my Powerglide in my 1970 Monte with the 350/300. I want to install a 200R4 but I hear some are better than others. Does anyone have a list telling which are the best and which are the worst of the 200R4's.
I am going to stay with the stock engine and have no intention of racing it. Although I may jump on it now and then at a red light. LOL
thanks for any help, Bob

Thank you, great information from everyone. I will crawl under the car today and check the length of the trans. Bob

Thank you, That site was good information. I have been online for about 5 hours researching swapping transmissions. Its looking like the 200R4 is pretty much a bolt in job where the 700R4 is cutting drive shafts, balancing driveshafts, moving cross members, changing yokes. So I am leaning towards the 200R4.
Any body have any pros and cons about the swap.
Thanks again, I really love that you guys give such great answers to a beginner.

Sorry I hate to sound stupid, but what is the meaning of (steeper first gear) and (lower over drive)

I have a 1970 Monte Carlo with a 350 V8 and a powerglide trans. I would like to change it for a 3 speed automatic with overdrive. Can anyone tell me what transmission would be best to use. And I do not want to ruin the looks of the Monte Carlo so I am not wanting to cut holes in it. I have bucket seats and console now. Also is there a 4 speed automatic with overdrive that would fit.
Any suggestions would be great, thank you Bob
