Dusted off the Monte and took the family out for breakfast and a nice cruise along the coast. The weather here was perfect after the the morning haze burned off, about 75 degrees and sunny. This weeks project: change the fuel filters and start cleaning the engine compartment.

Update: I was able to remove the dash pad and install the speakers (4x6). Apparently the dash speakers had been replaced once before as they were not the originals. This was beneficial to me in installing the new speakers as I was able to mimic the install on the driver side, the passenger side was no problem (as mentioned here). Next up is the sub.
I want to thank everyone for there help and suggestions/advise on helping me complete this project.

Well i was going to remove the dash pad and install speakers, but I some how got side tracked and decided to remove the grill instead. I cleaned and painted the slots silver. Here are some pics to show that it indeed happen.

You meant "4x6" right? I think a pair of 6x9 would require more than just minor mods. .
What kind of mods did you have to make?
Nice looking Monte, keeping it clean.

Bruce, thanks for the advise and the pictures they are very helpful. (you do have pics for everything - cool)
- Canuck, you would be doing this site a dis-service if you didn't keep him....

Thanks Jim,
I counted about 5-6 screws mostly around the instrament panel and another 2 in the glove box.
Is the dash glued down or is it fairly easy to slide off?

Hello all,
I hope everyone had a great and safe 4th of July.
I have a question. How do you remove the dash and is it difficult?
I'm thinking of replacing the dash speakers with a pair of Kenwoods. I thought about doing the kick panel speakers, but thought it would be a cleaner look in the dash. Not trying to blow out the windows (done that before) just a good mellow sound. I currently have a Sony detachable face and a pair of 6x9's on the rear deck and plan on adding a sub in the trunk. Thank you for your help and advise.

Well, I think I figured out the backfire issue. I notice there was a vacuum line disconnected going to the pump (valve) then adjusted the carburetor (running rich) and changed the plugs. Running much better and no backfire.
Thanks to everyone for the advise and suggestions.

Thank you all for your advise and suggestions. Most of the people I've spoken to about it pretty much have the same idea, "put it on the shelf" no longer required as mentioned.
-
Okay, so I disconnected the two hoses that go from the pump to the manifoids and it dose not backfire when I decelerate. I'm gonna to asume that it the "anti backfire valve" is this also known as a "diverter valve"?
Can this valve be repaired/fixed or once it gone bad...
Would it damage the engine if the vacum hoses were to be pluged and the pump contniues to blow air,or should the pump be capped too?
-
Okay, I'll check the wires for now. New wires when it gets converted. It runs fine no problems or backfire, just when it revs up and decelerates.

It's been about 10 months since a tune up. Cap,plugs, points and condenser were changed but the the wires. I'll be converting it to an electronic ignition soon.

Hello everyone, I have a question and need help. I have a stock '72 350 2 barrel and as far as I know it pretty much has most of its original parts. My question/problem is, I get a backfire/pop when I rev up the engine in park or neutral. What can be causing this?
Some have told me that it could be my smog/air pump others say it's the air fuel mixture/timing. I'm not a hard core mechanic unlike some of you (judging by the engine pics) on this bored and would appreciate any advise or help.
Thanks
What did you do to your Monte today?

Finally installed my sub woofer in the trunk - 100 watt self powered 10' Bazooka. This pretty much completes the sound system in the Monte.
