My 70 I bought in Sept 69 had no emissions either. Also a Van Nuys car ordered in Pendleton Indiana Sept 20, 1969. My 68 Nove two years before had a air pump with lines going to the exhaust manifolds. Nova 325 horse 327CI Monte 265 horse SB 400CI.

After putting on the new dist. cap and plug wires the 72 acted like it had a miss. Son in-law came up Sun and we checked pulled the dist. cap and it had dust in it. The dust seem to have came for the rotor cap as it had been rubbing the inside of the dist. cap. Put the old rotor back on and cleaned the inside of the dist. cap with electrical spray and the miss went away. We also pulled the valve covers and rest set all the rocker arms. He had to back then off over 1 1/2 turns to get them to rattle a little. He tool them down to where the rattle left and then another 1/4 turn. It seems to be running a lot better and sounds real good too.

I started the 72 up a little while ago and man does it ever sound good with the garage doors closed. Glendia came running out because the last time she looked about an hour before I started it the spark plugs wires did not have any ends for the dist cap. Here is a view of what he finished product looks like. http://s270.photobucket.com/albums/jj86/leghome/?action=view¤t=distpix.jpg

A couple of real small flat scrfew drivers did the trick for me.

Installed the new rotor cap and dist. cap. Now I need to finish the plug wires. Also started working on the new/used inner fenders I picked up about a month ago. They are going to look new after I give them a coat of Wizards Black Renew. That stuff is really making them look new all over again.

Got all of the new Taylor plug wires routed to the Dist cap and the Moroso Plug wire router things installed. Those things are really making the engine compartment look a whole lot better. Now to get the new Dist and and rotor installed. Had to take a break that bending over the fender is hard on this old mans back. I need my son in-law to show up and help me finish up.

I have never heard of Dick Harrel

Have not worked on my 72 lately but did sell several Model RR items Sunday and now have money for Monte parts. YEE haw

I's say it has a few holes in it.

Sounds like your flexy is on OK. I used to build those GM gear reduction starters back in the early 80. I was never impressed with them. We had a lot of problems with them and I do not know if they ever got into production back then because I left that area ASAP. I worked int he starter dept for 11 months and it seemed like 11 years.
-
Hopefully it is only the starter like mine was. Put in the new starter and then I had to replace the flexy cause the guy I bought the car from put the flexy in backards. The original starter had a problem and when I took it apart I could not get it back together. I used to build and rebuild starters for GM but these baby aftermarket things is a breed of a different cat. All the gears were good until I put in the new starter and that is when my son in-law and I found out the flexy was bakards.

Around here seafoam is $9.95 a bottle. O'Rielly auto parts has it on sale about every other month for $7.95. I usually put a can in my 72 about every third tank full of petrol and now that is is basically stored for the winter it got a dose before storage.

The SEM products are from a rattle can. The POR15 products come brush able and flow out very well. I used POR15 on my frame when I had the motor out in Dec and sprayed the SEM trim black right over it.
-
I used SEM part number 39143 trim black on my firewall and other parts under the hood. I like it real well and it was easy to spray. My only problem was the previous owner used an enamel paint and the SEM is lacquer based. I had to take lacquer thinner and wipe all of that enamel off to get the Trim black to not have a wrinkley affect.

I don't think a crate motor would hurt the value. To me it might increase slightly because it would be a new engine with a warranty. Although there are many who want Matching numbers on everything. Building up the motor you have would should not affect the value IMHO.

On bare metal an etch primer is the best. It bites into the metal and makes adhesion of all toppers last longer. Epoxy primer is really good if the vehicle will be exposed to any kind of weather or going to sit a long time before finishing. Bondo can be applied over the etch primer with no problems that we have found at the automotive paint store.

There is a place some where south of INDY that redoes bumpers like ours for $350. do not know the name of the place but I have seen some of his work and it really looks good.
-
So how did you get the old paint off? I am looking to redo mine next winter and a customer at the paint store where I work suggested getting it soda blasted. He told me that soda will take off the paint but not hurt the glass or chrome.

I have a 700R4 in my 72. I am really pleased with it but I need to have a local tranny guru do a little fine tuning for me. It does hit second gear pretty hard when you get on it. It will bark the tires when it shifts. Gas mileage on the highway with the 3:73 pos is around 20MPG running 70mph.

Do any of the parts stores in your area have one of those loan a tool programs. You rent the tool for the selling price and when returned you get a full refund. I have used them her in Central Indiana many many times over the years.
What did you do to your Monte today?
