I was picking my way along a forest trail leading to a "moose-viewing" observation platform in the Superior National Forest (NE MN) today when a piece of chrome caught my eye about 3 yards off the trail. There, crushed under a large boulder was a 1955 DeSoto FireDome 4-door Sedan! The frame was completely buried, the top caved in and the hood was missing but clearly visible were the rear bumper, much of the front bumper and grill, the right side doors and the 291 cu hemi engine (sans valve covers). I knew it was originally a Chrysler product because of the hemi engine and I assumed it was mid-50s because of the styling of the bumpers and grill but it took me awhile searching images online to confirm that it was a '55 DeSoto. I wish I could hear the story of how that vehicle ended up crushed by a boulder and half-buried in that remote section of a National Forest! Here's a LINK to a photo of how this car would have looked when new.
