  1. blake: assuming that his speedo is correct
  2. BBP: I took an old junk chrome valve cover and cut a window in the top of it just wide enough to get my 5/8 socket onto my stock rocker nuts & arms.. works great for controlling oil
  3. are you running a gear drive? I was reading a thread on hotrodders.com that using a gear drive with solid lifters can set up severe harmonics that will wipe out valve springs... just tossing that out there..
  4. WhiteKnight.. what part of Houston? I'm over in Roman Forest
  5. slaman: I would think ease of tuning would apply to racecars too.. why spend 15 minutes tearing a carb down to change jets when you can make a couple of mouseclicks and send the changes to the car? port fuel injection also allows for far better intake runner design, because the designers don't have to worry about things like fuel pooling, because there is no fuel in the runners.
  6. yeah I've built most of my computers over the years. my old k6-2 400mhz machine still soldiers on running windows 98se. i keep it around for a few old dos games that just won't run under XP. also have a couple of programs installed on it that I don't have the original install disks too anymore so I can't reinstall heheh. oh well. tho now that I've found "DosBox" I'm not really having any trouble running old dos games i've been able to play Warcraft Warcraft 2 Space quest 1 IndyCar racing II StreetRod II sadly, my install of quake 2 wasn't a full to the harddrive install so I can't get the no cd crack to work on that one
  7. yeah that FatMat is awesome stuff.
  8. it was my understanding that the o/s would make use of the dual processors and it didn't require an application to be aware of the multiple units.. guess I was wrong.. been a while since I've even seen a dual-processor mobo i don't know if it was Windows Vista, or the processor.. but my laptop was a Turion X2 64bit 2.0ghz machine.. and it ran circles around this p4 3ghz... is that just because it was a true dual-core setup? (32bit version of vista tho) it actually ran SH4 better then my desktop could! but it also had a slightly better graphics card.. which was part of the reason I assumed a new video adapter would help out with sh4,,,
  9. davey.. lol they are what us street motors use to keep sludge down winston.. sounds like you have a good plan there.. running the pcv off anything less then a 3/8" fitting is not going to allow it work correctly. check out the link I posted in my response. I used a 1/8" pipe-thread to an-4 elbow, and drilled and tapped the intake for 1/8" pipe-thread.. no reason you can't do the same thing with a carb spacer...
  10. andy: heh yeah.. I've never heard that one until now, but it doesn't surprise me there are a lot of superstitious people in the world. Me, I did my best to keep everything out of the oil pan except oil a little surface rust for good measure maybe
  11. 10 Engine Wives‘ Tales - Debunked by Don Terrill ©2003 1.) Grinding a crank under makes it weaker – Cranks always break in the same place, the radius – it’s the weakest part of the crank. The larger the radius, the stronger the crank. When a crank is ground there’s actually an opportunity to increase the radius and thus increase the strength of the crank. It’s all in the hands of the person doing the grinding – choose him or her wisely. 2.) Fuel Injection always makes more power – Fuel injection does a great job when throttle position changes often. For types of racing where the throttle is wide open most of the time (i.e. drag racing), a carburetor is a formidable opponent – especially when matched against throttle body injection. 3.) Too much spring pressure is hard on valves – What’s hard on valves is the speed at which they contact the valve seat at closing. What dictates how hard the valve hits the seat? It’s supposed to be the camshaft closing ramp, but when spring pressure is too low the valve does not follow it’s intended path and instead slams into the seat and actually bounces. So, actually more spring pressure helps the valve by forcing it to more closely follow the cam shape. 4.) Rod bolts break because they’re bad – Rod bolts are falsely accused of engine failure more often than any other part in the engine. 99% of the time a rod bolt breaks it’s not the bolt's fault, it’s the engine builder's fault – more directly the one who torqued the rod bolts. Not surprisingly, I’ve had a hard time getting people to agree – it’s a lot easier to say and believe that “It’s not my fault.” Rod bolts work by stretching, usually around .006”. They’re almost always less (say .004) when torqued with just a torque wrench. A stretch gauge is the only way to go. 5.) A 10qt oil pan needs 10 qts – Your engine needs only enough oil so the oil pump pick-up never gets uncovered, not an ounce more. I think you’d be surprised how little an engine can run on – I’ve raced with three before and heard rumors of racers successfully using even less. If pan manufacturers would stop “rating” their pans this way, the confusion would eventually end. Most wet-sump engines are perfectly safe at five quarts. 6.) Head gaskets can’t be reused – Motivated by the cost of current racing head gaskets, I started reusing them. The shorter the engine run time, the better your chances of success. Buy one set of gaskets, use them when honing with torque plates, reuse them for mock up, reuse them for assembly and reuse them after tech teardown. The biggest risk is a water leak – if that portion of the gasket looks good, go for it. 7.) Glowing headers mean the engine is lean – This wives’ tale is starting to lose steam, but still believed more often than not. Headers glow red for only one reason, there’s fuel burning inside. The two main reasons are a rich mixture and late ignition timing - which doesn’t give the fuel enough time to burn inside the combustion chamber. Test it for yourself, let your engine idle and crank the ignition timing back to the point where it barely runs, then get out the marshmallows. 8.) Bigger cam and ports = more max power – I know that most people now understand that bigger is not always better, but there’s still a great many people who think that bigger always means more peak power. Well, this isn’t true either, too big a cam or ports can lead to reduced cylinder filling, which in turn leads to LESS max power. Remember, everything in moderation. 9.) Setting ignition timing by ear works – There are still some old-schoolers left that believe this one, and you can’t tell them otherwise. Someone setting ignition timing by ear will always end up setting the timing too high – at idle it sounds great at 60 BTDC, at 7000 RPM (under load) I’m sure it’s down right scary. 10.) Flick ashes in the oil pan for good luck – Now this is a real wives’ tale. Believe it or not, people actually do this – I’ve seen it. If your engine builder thinks he needs some good luck, maybe you need a new engine builder. Think I’m out to lunch? Fine, write your own article Original Source
  12. well as the saying goes.. opinions are like armpits.. everybody's got 'em.. and they all stink. I guess I should specify.. I did the an-4 line more for looks then anything. I basicly 'hid' the connection to the manifold underneath the rear floatbowl of the carb, and just have a nice and pretty piece of braided stainless going to the firewall.. one day I 'll get around to finishing it by welding the hole in the firewall shut and using an an-4 bulkhead fitting... My custom vac line fitting
  13. hey at least I had a small success tonight.. found a crack to take the cd-check off of COD2.. so I can play it again!!! I do own a legit copy.. unfortunately, the box with the original CD's in it got left in Michigan .. ungh
  14. ah well. guess we'll see.. i'll buy a really nice graphics card.. and if it doesn't work out, I'll buy a new machine. I was thinking about something with Twin P4's (4 cores total) and probably run windows 7 on it. either that, or I want an AMD 64bit processor
  15. you really don't want the power brakes to share a vacuum line with anything due to the ammount of 'vacuum' it uses. I have my PCV connected to the base of the carb, the power brakes to the large port in the intake manifold, since I have a 700r4 I don't have a transline for the trans. spark is on a small mainfold vac fitting on the front of the carb. and I drilled a hole in the intake and tapped it, and added an an-4 fitting to provide manifold vac to the A/C system.
  16. al: LOL.. .that's a good way to put it
  17. if you think A/C is over rated.. come drive around in texas in august
  18. Mike.. yeah.. this is only a HyperThread P4 isn't not even a true Dual-Core. it runs COD 1 and 2 like nothing.. so I think I can run COD 4 ok. I'm working on a 2nd boot profile for XP that boots with basicly EVERYTHING shut off.. even networking to free up as much cpu as possible to see if that improves SH4. I was looking at COD4's graphics requirements and my card doesn't make it. my Video thankfully isn't onboard. it's a PCI-X adapter. this machine HAS onboard sound, but _NOTHING_ supports it's 3d sound chipset, so I turned it off and added the Sound Blaster Audigy so I had a Creative EAX3 sound card
  19. Amen brother... I *DID* loose mine at the end of the track.. and you ain't kiddin' about the t.p! when you watching those oak trees approaching at 90mph... thankfully my local track has a LOT of shutdown room, plus a big grassy field before you get to the oak trees..
  20. Mike... what I have now is a Dell Dimension 9100, but it's about 6 years old now. I know my dad shelled out a LOT of cash as this machine was bleeding edge at the time. i'll probably build my next machine again, but we will see.. like I Said.. my first goal is a new video card, that will blow a LOT of new life into this machine.. heck I haven't even filled the 150gb hard drive yet!
  21. chevySS: it's not.. even GM says anything over 500 miles/qt is fine.
  22. mike: ahhhh ok. I see no reason to upgrade this machine. When I get ready to upgrade o/s's I'll upgrade hardware too. I'd love a twin P4 or twin 64bit AMD desktop my laptop that was stolen was a Turion x2 2.0ghz and it SCREAMED but first I want to find a new video card. .my Silent Hunter 4 game can only JUST run on this p4 3.0ghz machine.. and I suspect it's from the lack of 3d support, because I smoke all of it's other requirements. and I can't even run any of the new Call of Duty's
  23. the problem is you can't compare leakdown rates with a compression gauge unless you are lucky enough to have one that doesn't 'hold' the peak reading.
  24. Man.. there's a heck of an echo in here
  25. you can thank C.A.R.B for that....
