  1. I agree with almost everything Sam said with the exception of the timing. My car is a late 70 out of the Baltimore plant and it has the full Halo. My car was produced in June/July 70 timeframe. The time a particular plant switched from the full halo, with the paint visible between the trim and the windshield, had more to do with when they were running out of the full halo trim and had received their trim for the 71 model year.

The only other point of clarification not mentioned in Sam's post is that the same "Vinyl Top" trim was used on the two tone painted cars to separate the two colors.

  2. Just a few notes.

My car has a fully functional Fiber Optic Light Monitoring System. Dave was right about it being a 70 option only and was not offered on the 71/72.

On mine, for the front, the Green ones are for the headlights and the clear/white ones are for the turn signals. Since the turn signal bulbs are amber, the white/clear ones glow amber when they are on.

I am not sure if the plug that goes into the headlight is a special plug or not but the fiber optic cable for the headlights plugs directly into the middle of the wiring plug which connects to the headlight bulb. On the back of each bulb there is a little tit that sticks out from the bulb lamp moulding and this comes in contact with that little tit.

For all of the other light fixtures, the front turn signal, license plate lamp and the rear lamps the housing are all special housing with a hole in them where the fiber optic, surrounded by a rubber grommet plugs in, sealing the hole.

  3. Kevin,

I think I would do the clear coat treatment of some kind. I have a feeling they had some kind of protection on them when they were new and it may have been clear coated in some what. I would try different clear coat finishes in an area it dosen't show much and see how it looks and make my decision from that. I am sure others have actually done something to restore theirs and maybe they will speak up.

  4. I have had the NOS metal ones on my car since I bought it in 2000 and I have had no problems with them. What I can say is without them the edge of my door would be toast by now. The garage I have my car stored in is very tight and I almost always have to bump the door edge against the wall just to get into or out of the car and I can guarantee there would be no paint on the dorr edges by now without them.

  5. Well, I just spoke to John "Pop" Holden, the man that opened

Community Chevrolet where my car was sold. Very nice guy.

I asked him if he might have any pictures of the dealership from

1970 and he says "I sure do". Not only that, they only sold a few

SS454's and they took pictures of them all. He might have a pic

of my car on the lot or with the original owner or both cool

    Hey Jake,

If that is the case it could be something that nobody else in the club could lay claim to. What a great story and how excited are you about this possibility... I hope it comes true but I'm sure you won't let us know..... or will you. laughlaugh

  6. It is a steel building on the east side of 17 on the Jacksonville

side of town. There is a fence around the property possibly.

That is all I have been able to nail down so far.

The SS I have mentioned for sale in the SS forum is located in Jacksonville, NC so if anyone is in the area and call look at it for any interested member let us know.

  7. Jim,

From Pittsburgh, I have driven mine to:

    Greensburg (Joint meet)

    Cleveland (NMCOA meet)

    Carlisle (FGMCC Eastern Meet)

    Indy (FGMCC Eastern Meet)

    Bristol Tenn, (FGMCC Eastern Meet)

    Commerace Ga (FGMCC Eastern Meet).

I have loved every trip but since it is a low mileage car (46,000 orig miles) I hate to put the miles on her.

    Jim,

I didn't realize you had driven to the meet in your car. If so, how many miles was it one way... I hope we didn't give the Longest Disatance Driven award to the wrong person.

On Jim's FGMCC window paper it said 500, he was second to my 575. Good to see an SS 454 get driven 500 miles and not trailered!!

    Jared

    Jared,

If there are two people that are close, as you and Jim were, we would have used a mapping program on the computer and mapped it out from door to door to see for sure and to be totally fair. I had no idea Jim had driven his car or I would have done that. Driving a 454 that far had to cost a bundle. I know that Greg and Capri were saying that they got better mileage in their truck, towing their 454, than they were getting in the car the short distance they drove it prior to going back to get it on the trailer.

  10. I really don't think it was a cost issue. they didn't seem to skimp on the Monte Carlo, espically the first few years. In the early years, the Monte was billed by Chevrolet as the Gentlemans Luxury Coupe. When they are billing something as luxury I don't think they would skimp on something like the inner felder wells.

Look at it this way. The Chevelle already had an inner fender well which would work on our cars and rather than spend the money to "reinvent the wheelwell" (excuse the pun) to save money why wouldn't they have just used the one already available and being used on the chevelle. Also, if it was mostly the same thing, and the production of the chevelle was much greater than the Monte Carlo it would have been more of a savings for them to use the plastic on the chevelle than on the Monte.

I suspect they may have been trying to save on weight. With the long front end on the Monte and that heavy hood I think they felt the plastic would be lighter and and with the cushy ride these Monte's had an increas in weight may mean a harder ride.

I also suspect the after market steel inner wells are not as heavy as the original ones they had on the Chevelle.

Of course that is just my opnion.

Where are the pictures I took of them...or are they so bad you don't want to post them...I never said I knew how to work a camera when you handed it to me... lol

    Bill

    Bill,

I will post them as soon as I can. They will also be in the newsletter. Thank you so much for shooting them for me. I will tell you the truth, I have not even had a chance to look at them because I have been so busy since I got home. Hopefully I will get some time to transfer them to my computer this weekend.

  13. Congrats to one and all! Way to go FGMCC! Sorry I missed it. I was hoping to have the George Lines award again. Speaking of that does anyone know what the actual criteria is for winning that award?

I guess the criteria is in the eye of the person judging. This year at the Eastern Meet we did peer judging so it was our members who decided it.

  15. From what I understand, none of the ones produced today are quite the same as origional. I think the seam on each side is a couple inches too far toward the center. I think when the reproductions are installed the seam between the trunk and rear window are about an inch or two away from the body seam near the corner of the window and I think the origional ones would run pretty close if not right on that seam..

  16. Capri,

If you go to most hardware stores you can find White Duct Tape... Just tear off a couple strips and place them over your emblems and rub the duct tape in real well to form into the numbers.... Then take an exacto blade and just cut off anything not recessed... Duct tape is a wonderfull tool, just ask Kevin
