  1. I have heard of a '71 402/4 spd that had the SS trim on the back, but none of the SS badges

    Sam,

That you may have heard from me. I know a guy here in Pittsburgh who owns the car. It has the black painted area below the trunk like the SS and it has the black rubber strip which runs across teh rear bumper. That car also has the air ride suspension, guages, special steering wheel and many other items.

  2. I have talked to many people who SWEAR that they have seen a documented SS454 Monte with a 4-speed. According to all of our information from GM, none were made. Nobody here has ever seen any documentaion of a 4 speed SS454. It is just like the people who swear they know someone who has seen one of the production 1970 factory rag tops... again, no proof

Until we see absolute truth of a well documented convertible or 4 speed SS454 we will assume they don't exist. I also have seen some of the books you talk about and since it is in more than one book we assume they are stealing informaiton from each other.

  3. Jagger,

This is a questions which pops up now and then. According to our research here on the site, it was not a Chevrolet decision to end the production. From what we can gather it was an assembly plant to assembly plant decision. Robert (monte70car) mentions it was an early production item. I would like to clarify that a little bit. The "Full" Halo was on all early production 70's but it was NOT limited to early production. My Monte was a late production 70 Baltimore plant car and it has the "Full" Halo and others responded that they had a late in the year build date from other plants and they had the Full trim.

What we have gathered from our research is that since some plants ended production of the "FULL" Halo earlier than others we feel that as they ran out of the 1970 trim late in the production year, rather than ordering a large stock of that trim and not being able to use it they simply switched to the 1971 trim which ran the vinyl material all the way up to the windshield trim.

Another item which was on som 70's but disappeared later in the production year was the think chrome strip that ran along the lower portion of the front fender extension just below the head light and just above the bumper.

  4. Jaylene (and Mike) glad to hear everyone and the car are fine. I am not sure of a couple things. You say you found the "Nut" near the car and it was stripped but the cotter pin was intact. If the cotter pin was still intact on the ball joint, how did the nut get off of the ball joint. Please ask Mike exactly what caused it, if he can tell that is. It may be a good learning experience for others here.

As stated above, it is always a good thing to go back over all the work a week or so later to insure everything is tight.

  5. You need to get some cute stickers of engines and transmissions to paste on your fender, just like the little flags on the nose of a WWII fighter.

With a combined tally of 7, you are beyond ace!

That is a good one... Only you could have come up with that.

  6. Tim,

It lasted longer than I thought it would. I think I predicted it would go before Christmas. I agree with what Mike said about flushing out EVERYTHING. I would not assume the shop which is rebuilding the tranny will do it so i would make sure you mention it to them and make sure it is in writing that they did it.

  7. Doug,

My car has the entire system and it is fully operational. The ones on the front fenders monitor the headlights and the turn signal/parking lights. The part mounted on the package tray had three monitor dots... two red ones for the brake/turn signal/parking lights (one left side and one right side) and one in the middle which monitored the license plate light.

Our club newsletter, "The Knight", has a regular column called "Monte Memories" which features stories that are first gen Monte Carlo-related. I am the editor of the column and stories are submitted to me for inclusion. Along with adding an introductory paragraph, I do my best to correct spelling, add appropriate punctuation, etc., and then send the final version to club VP Rob Peters, who in turn puts the newsletters together. Would it be alright with you if we used such a version of your story for an installment (or maybe two - LOL) of "Monte Memories"?

ROB - What do you think?

    Thanks,

    Dave

I think we would need a Readers Digest version.. That story could take up the entire bi-monthly publication so it is way too long for Monte Memories.

  9. I don't know if you have the origional valve covers or not. I think the SS Chevelles had chrome valve covers but the SS Monte did not. I am pretty sure the VIN will not tell us what kind of a car the engine came out of unless someone can match the number on the block to their VIN.

Thanks for making the engine available to our members. As to a value of the engine, That I can't help you with but someone may be able to assist you on that one. If you haven't opened the engine to inspect the insides it makes it harder. Do you know if the engine turns over freely? If you could give information on those things it may assist a member in determining if it is of any value to anyone.

  10. First off Happy New Year. My question is I need to know if you can get the weather strip for the quarter glass and the roof edge. Mine are cracked.

    my1st monte,

first off, welcome to the FGMCC website, glad to have you a board the boards and hope you will consider joining the club and come to the Eastern Meet near Greensburg in June. Where in Western Pa are you located. Pittsburgh here. We have Mike in New Castle and Scott near Kittanning

  11. Behind the Z20 there was also an 857 stamped but I can't figure this one out. I'll try to post pics soon.

    Stan,

I was wondering if it is possible there was a number 3 before the 857. If so it could be part of the body tag decoding numbers:

2nd and 3rd Digits Series 38 Monte Carlo

4th and 5 Digits Body Style 57 2-dr hardtop coupe

    Just a thought.

    Rob

  12. Phil,

Vacuum problems suck laugh ....Sorry I can't help you but I couldn't resist a little play on words joke. I am sure someone will be able to assist you. Just a question though, don't some of the cars have a small vacuum reserve canister... Not really sure that is what it is called but I thought there was something like that over near the air conditioning box on the firewall.

  13. Yes, I remember George and I also miss him. He helped so many people on the boards and because of all of the good information he provided, whe the moderators were deleteing posts they were told to steer away from deleting the helpful posts from him.

Regarding Pete, due to personal reasons he has removed himself from the board.

  14. I bought some Softseal trunk weather stripping in Indy this summer and everyone I talked to after I bought it told me I would have trouble closing the trunk because soft seal isn't the best one to use. I have also heard this with the other products they sell.

    Rob

  15. I can't explain why they won't come up. I noticed that the one posted by Tony now has the red X also. It was a picture of the rear of your car from the link in your original post. Just open up that post and double click on the thumbnail of the rear of your car. the hockey sticks are the two pieces which go from the tail light chrome to the long aluminum piece on either side.

    Rob

  16. Thanks for the big warm welcome! I am still so excited today about this MC sitting in the garage! Greg (my husband) will take it for the out of state inspection on Monday then it can come off the trailer & the search for the build sheet will continue. I am so praying we find one.

Before tearing the car apart looking for that coveted piece of paper, check the VIN number. If there is an "F" in the middle of the VIN number you can stop looking. The cars built in the Flint plant didn't have them. I should say that nobody here has ever found a Flint Built car with a build sheet.

From the pictures, it looks like a very unmolested real thing I would keep it as original as possible and stay with the 7" rally's and go with the thin white wall. I like my raised white letter tires on mine but sometimes wish I had gone with the thin white wall tire.

Problem is we have a 2 yr old & a 4 yr old so we'ld have to trailer it for the 5 hour drive and then be sure we could put carseats in the back to drive it around......not sure what others with small children do - this is new terrain. Plus I don't think my 4 year old would appreciate how loud it is sitting in the backseat, ya know?

The car seats will fit just fine in the back of the car. Espically at ages 2 and 4. That would mean they are forward facing car seats. A rear facing seat may have been a little bit of a problem once they are out of an infant seat but a forward facing seat should be fine. There were a number of little ones at the meet last year. We will be bringing our 10'X10' canopy and there will be others also so I if you don't have one I am sure you will be invited into the shade of someone elses. By all means, plan to be there, you can join the convoy. Some of us will be passing through Columbus a little before lunch time on Thursday on our way over to Indy and you could join in the convoy, even if the car is on the trailer.

    1) We were looking at an SS on ebay that we found thru reading this forum that is REAL and the guy was talking about "hockey sticks" in his ad ----what are they & where would they be and are they suppose to be there?

    2) Is the SS rear end suppose to be 10 bolt or 12 bolt? Same guy had a 10 bolt on his but I thought I read somewhere in this forum it was a 12 bolt....

    3) So, tell me who is Leo that everyone gives such accalades to? Sounds like quite the MC Expert.

Question 1.. The Hockey sticks he is talking about is the VERY HARD TO FIND chrome pieces on the 71 SS. On the 70 and 71 first Gen Monte's there was an anodized aluminum (chrome) strip just above the rear bumper along with two pot metal chrome pieces at each end of the aluminum. On the 71 SS the rear panel between the bumper and the trunk was painted matte black and had additional strips similar to the lower ones to separate this flat black painted area from the normal paint color. The two pieces at either side of the long aluminum pieces are now commonly refered to as hockey sticks because of their shape. If you look at this picture you will see them very well: a>

    Question 2..

If I am not mistaken I think it could have been ordered with either of the rear ends but I don't want that to be taken as gospel so I will let someone else address that question.

    Question 3..

Regarding Leo... They always say if you can't say something nice about someone don't say anything at all... You will hear nothing but nice about Leo. He is a great guy and his livelyhood is these cars. He restorers them for people for a living. He is a great source for many of the hard to find parts and a great source for information you may not find here on the boards. I suggest the absolute first thing you do for any questions you have is to use the Search feature here on the boards and if you don't find what you want then ask the questions. There is a wealth of information here already and you don't need to read it all, but by using the search feature it will bring you the information as you need it.

Again, Welcome to the website and if you haven't joined the club, the $20 dues is a small price to pay.

  17. here's what would have been on mine,

    278787_33_full.jpg

One of these tires is the original spare out of Rob Peters '70 Monte, the other I found in a '70 Caprice. They are both G78x15 tires with dual WSW (white side wall) one is a Firestone & one is a Uniroyal.

    Craig,

Wow, I only thought you wanted that old spare tire I gave you to use as a spare, I didn't realize you were going to use it to drive on. I didn't know if it was safe to use to drive on after all those years. I know my trunk had never leaked but I thought after all those years the rubber would have dryrotted. I am glad you were able to use it to drive on. They really look really look great.

  18. In truth, when the individual plant stopped using the Full Halo depended upon when they ran out of the trim pieces and started tooling up for the new 71 models. I feel to say that the full halo roof was used on the early 70's is kind of misleading. The two tone painted cars used the vinyl roof trim to separate the colors. My car is a late 70 Monte with the two tone paint and it has the full halo trim. It was built in late June or early July in the Baltimore Plant. I would not consider a car built in late June to be an early built 70.

  19. I don't know much about the Console shifters but in the column shifters the shifter can not be moved out of the park position unless the key is out of the lock position. Since this was a safety feature I would have to assume that this would be true for the console shifter. I would assume there would be some type of cable or electric solenoid lock on the shifter but my bet would be with a cable type lock.

Again, I don't know this for sure and I am just guessing but it seems logical.
