  1. Landshark, Are the spreaders just like aftermarket types? Thanks, Ed
  2. Rec'd my GM Protect-O-Plate decode book today. With POP one can determine if a 1st Gen is a SS454 when motor is gone. Great stuff. The 454-ci V8 has these codes for '70s: CRN, CRQ, CRR, CRS CRT and CRV. The CRS code motor translates to aluminum heads. Is this Chevelle only? Haven't heard of an original SS454 with aluminum heads. Did LS-6 have aluminum heads? If so, this would answer my question. Sgt. Ed of the SS454 Police.
  3. Gene, Thanks for your idea. But, being able to do what you suggested implies the interference fit angles between tie-rod ends and attachment holes in spindle arm and centerlink are the same for all three years. This I believe is incorrect. However, if I'm incorrect then what is/are the differences between '70 and '71-'72 tie-rods. It could be the sleeves having a different thread? Maybe. Ed
  4. A 4 piece set of '70 tie-rods are approximately $72 less than '71-'72s. Are the interference fit angles between tie-rods and their corresponding holes on the spindle arms and the centerlink different between '70 and '71-'72? If so, this would explain why '70 and '71-'72 aren't interchangeable. If not, I'm at a lost to determine a reason why '70 tie-rods couldn't be used on '71-'72s. Thanks, Ed
  5. Try thepartsplaceinc.com. I purchased a set and I think it was from them. Ed

    Trivia Time

Thanks, MarchieB. Louis Chevrolet and Billy C. Durant were founders of the company. If I remember correctly, Louis raced Buicks. Louis was in an Indy 500 but drove a Plymouth pace car. Gaston, Lou's brother, won the Indy 500. How did the Chevy bowtie orginate? Ed
  7. George, Gears have been removed. My guess is a max of 50,000 miles, maybe as little as 25,000 miles. The entire posi unit will be installed with a new crush sleave and kit. Will have installer set ring/pinion mesh/blacklash as close as possible to the old wear pattern. Thanks for the info. Ed
  8. What rear gear ratio did '71 SS454s generally come with? Ed
  9. George, Will be having rear gears installed next spring. Never knew/thought of a break in period for them. What are your views on breaking in used gears? Settings (tooth print, main cap torque, pinion crush, etc would be at least a little different compared to car it was removed from. Thanks, Ed
  10. Bob, Visit our archives for info under auto body repair on rusted roofs. Ed
  11. Lastss, It's approximately 43" between seams at front. Distance form seam to vinyl trim is different on each side, 3 1/2" to 4" front, 6 1/4" to 6 3/4" rear. Top on mine has been changed which may explain the difference. Guess it's close enough as never noticed it Suggestion: Make space between the seams 43" and center it on roof. Then distances from seams to vinyl trim on both sides would be equal. Ed
  12. David, I've heard many street runners say that the BFG drag radials are great. I'm run'n 15 X 8 Corvette rallys with regular GY radial 255/60/15s. Believe this is the widest tire that'll fit in the stock wheel well area with "stock wheel" backspacing. Although, the rear of my car sits about 1/2"-1" higher than stock due to new rear OEM springs that have never returned to stock height after three year of useage. Ed
  13. Removed one a few weeks ago. Follow Grease's procedure, it's right on the money. Ed
  14. Jim, Believe Gene is correct. How thick is it? Ed ------------------ '71 Black 406/700R4/10b-3.23, Branson participant '71 Sandalwood SS454 '71 Project Dark Green Metallic/GenIII346LS1/4L65E/12boltposi
  15. Thanks guys for the info. Understand need of a metal cover for the hole used for power window wiring. Ed
  16. Can mechanical windows be substituted for power windowed doors without modifications? Thanks, Ed
  17. Q1. Are 70-72 Monte doors interchangeable without mods? Q2. Will any 1st Gen power window door accept non-power windows without modification and visea versea? Q3. Will 71 door guts (windows, etc) fit into a 70 door without mods? Thanks, Ed
  18. Thanks Dave. Thought "Muscle Car Review" was purchased by "Hot Rod" and therefore out of publication. It has been my understanding that some 12 bolt cover rear ends have 10 bolt guts. Ed
  19. Suspect it isn't very thick. A spacer to compensate for difference between right and left ride heigths. Difference could exist due Andreas' reason or manufacturing. 20. What are the gear diameters (both 8.5"?) for 10 bolt and 12 bolt rear ends? Is the 12 bolt stronger because the components are larger? Thanks, Ed ------------------ '71 Black 406/700R4/10bolt, Branson participant '71 Sandalwood SS454 '71 Project Darkest of Dark Green Metallics/GenIII346LS1/4L65E/12bolt posi
  21. George, The problem may be a bent bumper bracket. By comparing left to right side bracket you'll be able to determine which one is bent. The straight one can be used as a reference. Disc Brakes

Iceman, Was informed via this website that some early '70s had drum brakes. Therefore, 454SS could have been so equipped. I've seen neither. Please show us a picture of the LS6 clone. radiator catch can

Tks, Mike. Mine is attached to right fender (not inner fender and looks aftermarket)next to battery. Ed
  24. Sigster, Suspect the color is cast iron gray. Some use a paint that color, others sand blast the part and paint it with a clear paint. I used the clear paint. However, it did change color (became darker) after a few years. 25. mc71454, Is it possible to run a rear 15x10 with greater than 5.5BS and avoid trimming the quarter panel lip and chrome? Thanks, Ed
