  1. I ordered a set of seatbelts from them for my girl as a new interior is on tap over this coming winter. They arrived today and look absolutely stunning. That said, they actually came from a third-party vendor/supplier thru SS396.

Now don’t even get me started on OPG... The new center counsel I ordered also arrived today, but was damaged (see pictures) and they sent the wrong colored rearview mirror kit (gray surround when I specified black).

Anyway, it’s not like I need these things right away, so hopefully everything else arrives in good shape.

Sorry, I meant Protectoplates for cars with TH400 transmissions.

I looked at my POP again to compare it against what you decoded. My POP is stamped with the “C” for Carter carb while I’m pretty sure the (supposedly) original carb that came with my Monte is a Rochester (see attached photo).

I believe that this is the original carb as the numbers match as original on other parts (intake manifold and distributor) that came with my girl. Perhaps the POP wasn’t stamped correctly (like my engine build date:  it shows 1222 on the block, but 1227 on the POP)?

Regardless, everything else lines up as it should, so I’m really not all that concerned.

    Thanks for your effort Glen,

When I sold my car back in 85, I was having an issue with the positive side of the coil wire melting all the way back to the fuse block. So it wouldn't start.  I tried everything to figure out what was going on with it, but gave up and sold it for 500.00. The guy who bought it said the engine alone was worth 500.00.    So I'm guessing he took the motor and sent the rest to the junkyard.  I lived in Crown Point Indiana when I sold it. I think the buyer was from Hammond.

Damn!  Let’s hope he was just BS’ing you and that the car is still out there somewhere. While the hunt and the chase to track these girls down can be both fun and exhilarating, it obviously can also be infuriating. Hell, I was only 15 when you sold that car; I can only imagine what might have happened over the 35 years since.

Regardless ...if you guys develop any new leads, please let me know and I’ll have my bud try again.

  5. Well done Bill!!  You didn’t waste any time. I really dig that color, briefly entertained looking at another ‘70 SS in the same green...  need that now like I need a hole in my head. The fam looks like they’re also enjoying Dads new car!  More pics when you get the time. Congrats again!!

  6. Welcome back, Bill. Hopefully you locate exactly what you’re looking for. If you hook your baby soon, there’s a handful of us not too far from you... perhaps a Chicago/surrounding suburbs FGMC Mini Meet over the summer?

  7. Ok, am I the only one who immediately thought of Leslie Nielsen’s exchange with Priscilla Presley in Naked Gun?

Back on point, beautiful trio you’ve got there, Beaver!  How is your ‘71 lowered?  Did you cut the OE coils or do you have adjustable coil overs?  Asking because mine arrived with the latter and I’ll be experimenting with dialing them in to my preference sometime soon (ride is a little harsh on some of these Chicago streets).

Welcome to the boards… I’ve only been here a short time myself, but there is definitely a ton of knowledge and good people populating the site

High output 2.8. Lol. I have driven those. Still don't agree with you as being fast. Even back then, new. But to each his own.

    Agreed.

    The 2.8’s had a 0-60 time of a week to 10 days.

And 1/4 mile times?  Let’s just say that erosion is quicker.

  9. I had the same pressurized gas cap problem as my tank isn’t vented. The tank would actually contract with a loud “thunk” as I removed the cap after driving, especially when there was only a little gas (more vapor) in it.  I ordered and installed a “vented” cap and still had the same issues   I fixed this problem by drilling six 1/16” holes in the cap. Now when I back into the garage and turn the car off I can hear the cap hissing. Problem solved, just don’t squat down by the rear plate with a lit cigarette in your mouth to check your handy work.

Interesting that Gen X favors the Monte over the Chevelle.  I certainly fit into that category!

Ditto.  Me and my ‘70 SS were born the same year.

I’ve always loved Chevelles and Camaros (my first ride at 16 was a ‘67 Camaro with a 327 and PG)... but “everyone” has one of those cars. Give me ANY first generation MC over those other Bow Ties anyway.

I’ve been working on a page today for decoding the protectoplate. I had no idea how much information is available on there. If anyone wants to share their protectoplate with me I would appreciate some examples.

I have the protectoplate for my Dad’s Chevelle he sold in the 70s. I had fun decoding that today. Here’s what I found with that car:

1970 Chevelle 2door coupe built in Oct 1969.
    307 engine with TH350 trans.
    Rochester carb.
Engine was built in Tonawanda Oct 1, 1969.
2.73 non posi rear built Oct 17, 1969 by McKinnon Industries.
The transmission was built by Cleveland Sep 27, 1969.

There is even more info on specific option codes but I’m not going that deep with our page. That would be a lot of info to research.

Here’s my Protect-O-Plate from a previous SS454 thread. Fire away...

  12. Thanks, gents. I consider myself lucky to have found this girl when I did.. I wasn’t planning on looking for my retirement gift to myself for a few more years, but something made me once again Google “70-71 Monte Carlo SS” last fall. I wouldn’t call it an impulse buy as I knew not to fall in love with pictures on the internet and I’m reasonably well-versed with numbers, options etcetera, but I quickly got “that feeling” that this car had to be mine.

While far from perfect, she came with the mechanical heavy lifting already done by previous owners who recognized and appreciated the rarity and significance of these cars. Thankfully they had the foresight to retain (the majority of) the original parts and keep them with the car. It will make returning her back to 100% stock that much easier if I ever decide to take that route.

I looking forward to meeting some of you guys (and gals) when the work and life schedules allows us to do so.

    Be safe, all!

  13. Not sure if mama and I are gonna make the Bristol meet this year (fingers crossed for next year), but definitely looking to get to some local cruise nights this summer. Keep me in mind and I’ll do the same with anything I hear.

OPGI had one, bought lots of stuff from them, dont know why I didnt look there first.  $2.50 and $9 to ship it🙄

Yeah... OPGI’s shipping policy/costs drives me bananas. I made the mistake of forgetting to include the rubber bumpers/stop kit (neither door had them, there was only one behind the license plate frame, and the four under the hood were pretty much shot/dry rotted) on an order of other items that shipped for free. That $15 kit cost me $30 with shipping.  Totally bogus, but they know they got ya.

  15. Finally got the time to free the Monte from the bubble.  She leaked about 3/4 of a pint of tranny fluid over the winter, so those O-Rings will be getting replaced sometime in the very near future.

Stayed close to home for the maiden voyage, so no exciting backdrops (unless a Chicago alley is your thing).

And wouldn’t you know it, the local weathermen are calling for up to 3” of snow on Tuesday. Bastards.

More pix forthcoming when I get her out regularly after this week of crap weather. Gotta change the oil, so the numbers hunt will also take place at that time.

And proudly rockin’ the FGMCC front plate!! - that went on first thing out of the garage.
