My understanding is that the Protect-O-Plate was done by the dealer at the time of delivery.

I agree that it is a typo error.

I’m diggin’ the consensus... my mind was going in several directions earlier when I first noticed the discrepancy. Can’t let an over active imagination get the best of ya. Thanks again everyone, will update on this issue when she’s out of hibernation.

I think there’s simply a typing error when the protectoplate was created. That’s my guess.

That is my thought.  If you have any additional paperwork with the car you may be able to verify it is just a mistake from the factory.

Thanks Gents… That possibility actually never crossed my mind, but it logically makes sense.  Like I mentioned, everything else lines up:  VIN on every document that accompanied the car when it arrived (bills of sale, build sheet, prior vehicle registrations, etc.).

Rest assured I’ll be crawling under her first thing when she comes out of the bubble in spring and checking by the oil filter.

And since I know everyone here loves pictures… In the event that anyone has time to thumb through over 250 photos, I’d be happy to share the dropbox link of all the pictures the inspector took, just private message me with your email and I’ll forward you the file.  The inspector also took a 25 minute video going over the entire car,  complete with the previous owner test driving it while he filmed and critiqued from the passenger seat, but he has since deleted that from his files because it took up too much room 😡

thanks again for the educated opinions!

    See if this looks better.

Lol. Looks A LOT better, thanks!... except that the third number is still “7” and my block shows “2”.  I need additional help solving this mystery it is appreciated. You still get an “A” for the effort, Jft69z.

  4. Just looking over my SS’s inspection photos and accompanying documentation and found a discrepancy.  The block is stamped “ T I  2 2 2 C R N” but the Protecto-O-Plate shows “ T I 2 2 7 C R N”.

My research and knowledge gleaned from the good people on this forum confirm that CRN is the correct block. But why they don’t match up - yet are so close sequentially - has got me scratching my head.  Perhaps a boo-boo on the assembly line?  Has anybody here heard of something similar?

Everything else seems to lineup correctly:  VIN, original owner as stamped on the PP, etc.  Any help deciphering this discovery would be greatly appreciated. Please reference the photos attached (my apologies for the upside down and backwards PP)...

The wife and I found that line particularly amusing. Must’ve watched it a dozen times now and laugh every time. Such simpler times...

So I’m venting. I am trying to measure pinion depth on my rear end. Every time I measure it it comes up different by 4 inches. Sometimes 3 or 5. So I changed the battery. No difference. I now need a new digital caliper. It won’t show false readings anymore. Lol 😆. Caliper vs. toolbox. We have a winner.

If it makes ya feel better, I love the fact that you work on your car in Bear Paw slippers. Nuthin keeps the tootsies warmer, particularly on the concrete floor of a detached garage in the winter. I love mine. Only negative?  My feet smell worse than a dirty diaper left in a hot car with the windows up after donning the Bear Paws for more than 10 minutes.

  7. That’s one of those “car stories” that’ll never get old to tell.

$5, eh??  Taking inflation, depreciation and aggravation into consideration, I’m prepared to make you a most generous offer of $17 for her 😂

Welcome (back),  can’t wait to see the progress you make with her.  Have you decided on what color you’re going to go with eventually?  Cortez Silver is the cats a^* in my humble opinion. I’m gonna echo the masses here... lotsa pix, please!

  8. AJ...

Yeah...I’m over a year late to this post as I’m perusing the site on my day off. At least I know there’s at least 3 of us in/near Chicago. Give me and Roger a shout in the sprint when it’s time to break the girls out of hibernation.

glen, where are you located in chicago, excellent cruise nights in the area, roger

Hey Roger, I’m near Midway Airport. Please keep me posted on nearby cruises once things get back into motion come spring. I was in high school when Dukes was really jumping on warm summer weekends - too bad it’s now gone. Really looking forward to driving and showing her and getting back into cars like I’ve always wanted to but never made time to do.

  10. Thanks Darren, that makes sense the more I look at the build sheet and compare it to other literature I’ve read. I knew I came to the right place with questions. I can only imagine the conversation between husband and wife when they sat down at the dealership to order this car new:

Greasy Salesman:  “Ya know, holeshots are boss with a Posi”.

Husband:  “Honey, I’d really like the Posi... it’s only an extra 40 bucks”.

Wife:  “You promised that you’d stop at that $420 SS-Minow... whatever it’s called option. You know Janie needs braces, so NO. No more ridiculous options”.

Husband:  “The stock two fifty six limited slip will be more than enough”.

  11. And it looks like I may have answered my own question regarding the G80 option not being checked when my Monte was built. Closer investigation of the build sheet revealed the following (see attached pic). Can anyone opine that this likely means that the original purchaser ordered the car without posi?  Also, code GW4 on the build sheet denotes a ratio of 2.56. But I’ve also seen literature that shows GW4 as 3.31. Anyone have clarification?

  12. No problem Dan, glad to contribute what I can. It’s cool to see that there’s people who take interest in collecting and cataloging documentation to preserve the provenance of these beauties.  I can’t tell you how many horror stories I’ve heard of people buying complete duds based on BS descriptions and strategically taken photos.

  13. Hey Overdrive,

Heres a pic of my build sheet to add to your collection. Hopefully it will help serve as a reference/validation, etc. in the event it’s ever needed. I guess this will make #13 1970 SS’s with black columns, 4 with black interior. No G80 option 😞.  My longtime Mechanic who just retired had a ‘71 SS, also out of Van Nuys and originally sold in Arizona without posi.  Did Chevy not include them thinking they weren’t necessary in states that never see snow? Did original owners decline this option for whatever reason?  Who knows...

From looks of it, I’m guessing it may have come off the gas tank (no discoloring consistent with seat springs on it). I am going to pull the back seat the first time I take her out of the bubble come spring time to see if I can’t locate another one. Highly unlikely but ya never know. I’ll keep you guys posted.

I also threw you a picture of the Protect-O-Plate for your collection.

  14. Thanks Cbolt and Darren, I’ll post more pix once she’s freed from her cocoon in the spring (I’m hoping for a short, mild winter). I’d love to be able to drive her year round. Retirement will be here in about 5 years and somewhere south will likely be the final place we’ll call home, so more months of driving each year will be likely.  Be safe, everyone. And Merry Christmas & Happy New Year to all.

  15. Mark,

I could see that probably being a possibility if the bike was in there a long time with the Capsule being in an area where the ambient atmosphere remained dry/unchanged for prolonged periods. My garage door will be open a few times daily allowing the fan to draw in fresh (and likely at times humid) air. so the humidity levels will definitely constantly fluctuate, it just won’t always be heavy humidity. Excellent observation and thanks for the heads up.
